Rain Rot

The horse i was leasing once had rain rot. my farrier
gave me some medicine (i think it was i.s.p) to put on it.
however, he didn't explain what causes it, etc... so, i was
wondering, just what exactly is rain rot, how can you prevent it, and how should you properly treat it?

This is also known as rain scald - and its usually caused by the same bug that causes mud fever. So one treatment is to wash the area with Hibiscrub or Pevidine and try and get the scabs off and then apply Dermobion.

Keeping the horse's back dry while you treat it is useful. The bugs love damp conditions.
