Not sure I'd want to go over about 13hh+. Why are you breeding, if I can ask?

I thought that too.
till i saw a stud with a 15.1 who covers mostly 12hh-13.2 to produce 14.2 jumping pones?!

I wouldn't want to risk the mare given the potential size of the foal.

13.2hh they always say a maximum of a hand higher I wouldn't risk a mare to anything bigger

I think its quite a common mix - a smaller horse bred to a small pony. The mare will naturally have a foal she can give birth to, its a freak occurence if the foal is too big for the mare and not a result of a bigger stallion.
Though by that argument, you could breed a 17hh stallion to an 11hh mare! You may be able do it, but frankly I wouldn't go over the sizes amberpumps said..

13.2hh, just maybe 14hh if stallion is lighter build than the mare.
Have seen lots of 12.2hhs put to taller with no problem but have also seen them have awful complications resulting in loss of mare or foal (and in one case, both).
There's a chance you'd get away with a bigger stallion but also a much higher chance that something could go wrong - is it worth risking a mare (and also foal)? Not for me.

you can get throwbacks in all lines- a 16.2 mare could throw a 14hh even when put to a similar height stallion.
could similarily throw a lot bigger, even if put to a similar height stallion.
its hard at the best of times, foaling is full of risks so its not worth adding to them IMO

Sadly that's not the case, although lots of people believe it is.
I bought a 13.3hh in foal to a 16.2hh - we very nearly lost them both.
I know of enough ponies covered by bigger stallions that did have serious complications to have lost all faith in that myth. My (equine) vet advised the same - not only do you stand a chance of the foal being too big to deliver, but he's also seen mares with pelvic problems when live cover is used with a big stallion and small mare.
