View Full Version : Too poor for Parelli!

I was starting to get kind of interested in the Parelli training so I looked into buying a book, but the first set comes only as a 'kit' and that's $125 to find out if I would even think I like it.
So boohoo. I am too tight to take that risk and very disappointed I won't get a chance to get to know his methods without committing myself to such an expense...
Peace

I don't know if you've seen this one already, but here's a description of the seven games.

Like you, I'm kind of interested, but $125.00 is WAY out of my student price range!:)

Oh thanks a bunch!
I think I mentioned in my post on the knotted halters that I didn't like how much emphasis was put on dominance at that barn, but I guess the seven games are 1 friendly game and 6 leadership games.
So I think I will spend my money on something else. I think clicker training will suit us better. I don't need to establish leadership, DJ is happy to have me take care of things. He doesn't question that I am the big momma...

We are skint too but we just about managed to get the kit by joining the Parelli Club - that costs £10 a month but you get the kit free with membership and when you have passed level 1 you get the next kit free. I know this is still too much for some people (it would have been for me - I'm a part-time student - but Stephen - nice Stephen :D - is paying:) ). You end up paying more but it spreads the cost and you get the newsletter and access to the parelli web group (good for asking questions or getting support when things are not going to plan).

Oh and we didn't buy any of the equipment that is overpriced - we bought a (brand new) bareback pad off ebay for £50 instead of £175 and we use a dealers whip (like a driving whip) for the carrot stick as they only cost about £12 and we are getting the halters from a place in Scotland for £12.50. There is another thread on this forum with equipment ideas like these on.

Parelli seems to get interpreted differently by different instructors - I have heard that some can be very dominant, but this is not 'necessary' from the others I have seen.
There is a book published by Western Horseman in the US which predates the kits (and is a bit less clear, but still useful). It is called "Natural Horse-Man-Ship" by Pat Parelli and is ISBN 0-911647-27-9
There is also another US clinician - John Moore (web site (http://www.johnmoore4horses.com/index1.htm) ) who seems to have a similar approach and has just published a little booklet on 'how to'.
I seem to recall Parelli splits the 7 games a bit differently - actually more are 'friendly' than just the first one.
Observing at a Parelli course cna be a cheap way to get to know the approach. There are also various natural horsemanship web sites - which are a very cheap way to read around the subject.
Then at least you can make an informed decision about spending your hard earned cash !

I bought my Parelli book Natural Horse-Man-Ship at Amazon.com for about 16.00 including shipping the book is really good and can get you started. I also bought his video The 7 Games from his web site that was around 56.00 with shipping. I was lucky because I was loaned the video first and had a chance to decide if it was worth the money. I'm also lucky to have a neighbor who just finished Level One and is helping me. She also loaned me the Partnership kit to see if I like it. I'm busy writing alot of notes from it's booklets and studying the video that comes with it. I really think if you just invest in the book and Games video you can really get alot out of the program. Oh and also check out Ebay for his stuff.

If you'd like more freebies - go to http://www.ponyboy.com and join up (free) once you're in the members area you can pick up 6-7 exercises to play\train your horse with.
If you're not familiar with GaWani PonyBoy and don't like the 'showbiz' side of NH I suggest you close your eyes to all the marketing photos ;) I've seen him in action and he's nothing like the impression the 'glitz' gives you - very practical, very conscious of safety (for beginners esp) and very pragmatic in his approach - doesn't worry about gear etc so just close your eyes as you go through the website
