Why does she change her legs a lot before a jump sometimes? *vid*

it's the first clip after the writing right at the beginning, she does it three times!
it looks like she's backing off but she always jumps it? :S
she doesn't do it with tiny jumps though, just when they get a little bit bigger, but what she's jumping there isn't even big for her so not sure why she was doing it?
not that is matters I was just wondering :)

errm, she's pretty well schooled but no haven't really done any dressage with her. the change after the jump I asked her for, but not the first ones! :confused: x

Have you tried putting poles on the approach to the fence to help her out? From the vid she looks to be a lovely jumper but it maybe that she is an honest horse that just isn't sure about where her feet are when jumping.

thanks, will definitely try that! that's really helpful actually because now i think about it she hasn't jumped most of the winter so maybe needs a bit of refreshing on the subject :p x

Watching some of your other clips where she doesn't appear to be doing it I'd say that she is doing it through tiredness or lack of confidence. Not sure if it is the angle of the camera but she does seem to get in closer to the fence than necessary so a couple of placing poles (one a stride away from the fence and another about a foot from the bottom of the fence) will help with this and will help her to collect herself.

It could be that her strongest side is the one she changes to beforw jumping; it may help her to balance and jump more efficiently.

This will sound a bit stupid, but is she just excited? My pony when he first started jumping a fair size used to get very excited, and is a very genuine lad (he is forward, but never naughty, do anything I ask..), so in his excitement would do flying lead changes. (He does it in the field too.. all the rest are flying round bucking and he's acting out dressage... so this could just be my horse being a moron.) Maybe it's just her way of saying I'm having fun? My boy stops it at about 3'5" ish when he has to start working a bit harder, so I shouldn't worry too much about stopping her unless you do working hunter or any showing classes with fences in as long as she is balanced over fences..

That doesn't sound like a stupid point at all!
I hadn't really thought of that tbh, and that could be likely as she does enjoy her jumping and sometimes can get a bit over excited and leave me with not so much control, but as she was in a more controlled canter there that may have been her way of showing her enthusiasm! :D:p

My horse jasmine who is a very forward going arab loves doing flying changes in canter. She will sometimes do loads in a row just on her own without me asking. I must do some dressage with her one day.
I am sure it is just excitment.

:D My boy often changes his leads, instead of bucking in the field.. it's quite funny to watch him play, it's all lead changes, pirouettes and the like. We reward them for doing these things, and its fun for them, so it can become an outlet for energy I think.. I've never told him off for it, so he can express himself constructively. (He always canters better after he's been 'skipping')
