You might be risking it, it's your horse and you know her best :)

Thats what i thought!! she is walking fine now, but with any muscle/bone type injury it takes a bit to heal (if it is that for definate-praying its not an abcess!)

well im def not going xc this weekend. i was going to practice our ditch jumping as she hates them!! there is a HT at the same xc course on 3rd May. I think I'm gonna go then if she stays sound from now-and unless you all say otherwise! ;) so i could risk the ditch jump, as i have built one at home to practice with. there are also some big steps im scared of that i wanted to practice before the comp too  but maybe i should just be very brave and go on 3rd may and not practice before??

well i actually sat on her tonight as she seemed sound in walk and trotting up on hard - so decided to take her along road a little- fine going on flat and down hill but quite uneven when turned to come up hill - only did 500 yards each way really - so got off and walked her home.

There;s no heat in legs or feet - but she has one enlarged knee - has had it since i bought her - a lot to do with her falling over whilst half asleep ..... have to get the vet to her this week for something else so hoping some bute will help.....not going to sit on her again even if she is trotting up sound til late next week - hope shes fit for riding club camp at end of may but not going to put pressure on her at all....

gosh they are a bit similar then!!annie doent have any heat/lumps. maybe i will hack her down the road on thursday say, just to see what she feels like.

ooo maybe 3rd may to soon for me then?? hmmmm i confused. she was not terribly lame on friday, and was weight bearing. not lame now, or yesterday. hoping she will stay right. obv dont want to do anything to make her worse, but just looking to do the 2ft - 2ft 3 xc any comments yes/no answers appreciated ;)

Hmm...I wouldn't go to the practice this weekend as it would be horrible if it she wasn't quite right and then she was off for even longer...do you have to enter in advance for the XC comp or can you wait until the day? If you can I would just wait and see how she goes..it's about 2 weeks away isn't it? Tick her over and if she's sound try a bit of jumping and see if she is still sound, and if so then maybe give it a go? I think you'll know though, you know her best.

Hope her tootsie peg is all better soon! I'm determined to do some riding between split shifts from now on (next 5 days), not sit down and sleep!

I would leave it longer before doing anything much ridden-wise with Annie. Why don't you do some groundwork this weekend? Things like practising walking over tarpaulin are a really good way of bombproofing & they help the horse learn to trust you - and they ought to help you with the ditches ;)

Iron Maiden out of interest how long would you leave it to ride properly and jumping? Good idea, i do groundwork loads with the others but not so much annie, i take it for advantage that she already 'knows' it but tarpolin etc stuff is good idea!!! i'll try that.

laura-i can enter on the day!!!! so beauty, just need to wait and decide. i dont want to wreck her and make anything worse. update today shes walking/trotting round very sound :D

oooo i bet your excited about goin out riding again!!!

If she stays sound without any further problems I'd maybe do some little jumps next week but only on good going. I'd leave it at least a fortnight before jumping anything substantial. First sign of anything amiss I'd get the vet to take a look. I'd also be hoping it IS an abscess - at least you know that's unlikely to be something that could cause long-term soundness problems. Something tendony, ligamenty or jointy would be much more of a worry but that's just me!

Kate&TheHerd

so thinking poss best to leave the xc in 2 weeks? I see what your saying about abcess/ligament thing, i am just praying that its all dissappeared now!!!

See how it goes but be cautious. Even if it doesn't aggravate any injury, if she is slightly uncomfortable it could put her off her jumping & that's the last thing you want.

is it ok to trot yet? she is still sound, but im scared to do anything but walk :( iv found a show instead on the 3rd of may!!! if shes still sound and ok by then, will it be ok to go?? no jumping just a bit of showing....

Iron Maiden

Oh bless! If she's been sound for a few days I'm sure she'll be fine to have a trot  Just take it a step at a time & keep an eye out for any problems.

None of us have a crystal ball or some sort of third eye insight into these things! It's just a case of being sensible I guess. It's harder if you don't know exactly what caused the lameness is the first place but if you take things a step at a time & build up Annie's workload without her showing further signs of lameness it's all looking very hopeful :) The important thing is not to ignore any signs that the lameness is coming back, then the best things is to get the vet & they can advise you on things like ridden work etc.

Kate&TheHerd

i know...:o i just worry about her (and them all!) far too much. im just like you say, taking things real steady. ok walk and (brave!) trot tomo no canter and will see how she is then may go out longer on sunday.

what i'd do without your sensible talk/reassurance!
