I own a 14.1 Fjord mare, she is 15 years old got her last August, she came to me as a first pony and she really was absolutly amazing but she would never break into canter  Someone came round one day and just gave her a huge kick and off she went, ever since she has cantered perfectly. Do you think she was a driving pony before she came to me as she came from Belgium, she does a reallly fast trot and it excellent on the roads, wish i could get her history!

Here she is :D

What a beaufiful expression she has in that picture.

You may be able to trace where she has been from the

I had read somewhere once that trotting is a fjords favourite gait...:D

Some Fjords, depending on their conformation, find cantering in school and maneges really hard. You can get them to go with a lot of encouragement, but they can find it hard.

It might be that she spent more of her time in harness than being ridden and has never been schooled in canter much.

I see your mare too has a huge whorl on her neck. Our lot seemed to be covered in whorls in strange places too.

The Fjord I owned came from Belgium and I traced the breeder through the Belgium Fjord Society, it was a long wait though to hear from them.

She's beautiful!!!

When I had my Fjord mare... she would just trot and trot fast....she was mostly driven and ridden only a little.
Took her a bit but when I let all the horses in the big hay field during the winter, the others would leave her in the dust as they galloped off...even the mini's. LOL
Guess one day she got tired of it and desided she had to do what they were doing.
After than... canter was pretty easy for her.

never again

She is lush.

I have a 5yr old fjord gelding who I have broken in and tbh have never had a trouble cantering as I have taught him the aids etc.

It is possible your mare was driven reguarly in comparison to riding, and this might be why she was rusty in canter? Your friend may have just encouraged her forwards enough into canter.

And Wally, my vet had to charge differently because when doing his passport diagram, he took so long finding all the whirls - he apparently had never seen so many! :

ps - once again, she is gorgous. If you want to, feel free to PM me

Our mare had a wonderful canter in harness, rubbish under saddle. :D :D

What is it with Fjords and all those darn whorls all over the place.

I love her whorls they really stand out and "non horsey" people always comment on them.
