Yep. Love em. I ride at Cumbrian Heavy Horses sometimes. They are just such gentle giants but really forward going with it. I'd love to have one but not really in a position to at the moment.
Annie, the owner of Cumbrian Heavy Horses is mad about Clydesdales and they have quite a few. I'm sure she'd give you some advice but this is a busy time of year so you may not get a quick response.
Put in a google search and you'll get the website easy.
I'm so jealous of you!!

Long-time Clydie fan here (have loved them almost as long as I've been riding!).
Going down to the Cumbrian Heavy Horses for the third time later this year - can't recommend them enough, really.
Have DOZENS of pics if you're interested. Most of them are from shows etc, but I have quite a few of a Clydesdale mare I used to ride, her baby, and a monster that I looked into sharing last year....
Let me know if you're interested.

Some Clydie-crosses from my usual riding school:
Amber - Clydie-x-Warmblood.

My first lesson/hack on her had me falling off, but simply 'cos I lost my balance after she got a fright.
Billy, a Clydie-x-Thoroughbred
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/DazDaMan/Horses/DSC01154.jpg
A "proper" riding horse. In other words, you really have to think in order to ride him. Let your concentration slip, and he'll dawdle in the school, but on a hack he's a diamond.

My favourite RS horse. He knows his job inside out, and is fantastic - as my stepdad can testify, since he rode Brambles on his first ever lesson/hack! Every riding school should have a Brambles!

Thanks abisheridee. I,m really proud of her and she is the kindest gentlest mare you could meet. As big as she is she is always the most bullied in the field. A little shetland no bigger than her knees used to kick the crap out of her and she never retaliated once. Fortunately we have our own place now so she wont ever be bullied again.

I got some nice photos of the heavy horses at the Shire Horse Sanctuary in Norfolk on Tuesday, so will have to post them up. I think the first thing I saw there was a great big brown bum belonging to a Clydie! :D They had a Shire-x-Clydie there, too.
Anyway, here's a couple of pics of a handsome beast that I went to view last month...

My clydie was barefoot and coped really well, lot of people told me she wouldn't,but I'm stubborn like that and knew she could go bare, maybe give it a try it's a heck of a lot cheaper, and better for their feet:D
Is your lad a registered clyde BTW?? What happened to his feather, did someone give him the chop poor lad:p
In answer to original question,I had a clydie mare until around 7 months ago, owned her for nearly two years.I wouldn't have another pure bred one TBH,although would maybe have a nice cross breed.I am a fan in a sense,as there are many nice traits in the breed that I like, but like I said wouldn't be in a rush to own another one.
Have just two tips for you:
1 Don't EVER let a clydie (or any other heavy horse) know that they are stronger than you, they have very gentle natures if handled correctly, but they can and will learn how to use their strength and size to their advantage if you allow them too.
2 Don't EVER assume they are dumb. This a mistake a lot of people make with heavies, they mistake their placid natures for being a bit slow. They are some of the most intelligent horses I have ever met (and know many other heavy horse people that agree). They catch on FAST,and again will use it to their advantage if you allow them too.Can be very stubborn and strong willed as well (if a clydie plants you can forget moving for a while lol),oops sorry that's 3 things will shut up now;):p:D
My mare was actually very good, and not often like mentioned above (she had the odd moment though:rolleyes:),but she was always handled kindly but firmly after I was told all these things and had advice from my local heavy horse club (do you have one near you, well worth joining if you do),and like I said when handled correctly they are lovely gentle creatures.
Sorry for waffle and here's a couple of pics of my girl I had to make up for it:)

I'll echo devonlass's comments there - the Clydesdales I've worked around in the past have been unshod, but I suppose it depends how much roadwork you want to do with him.
Ace (Shire-x-Appaloosa) definitely knows how to get the better of you, using his size and strength. However, he will only try it on with someone he doesn't know (NOT me!!). He's also rather stubborn and will, if you let him, bolt off with you if he feels he's out of his depth.
As DL says, the big ones are rather intelligent, and can pick things up rather quickly - especially the Clydie filly I taught to give kisses....

Hi Devonlass - my clydie is the black one, william - album on my profile and some piccys on this thread page 2 I think.

As DL says, the big ones are rather intelligent, and can pick things up rather quickly - especially the Clydie filly I taught to give kisses....
Don't know about you,but I was gobsmacked at just how clever they are. When I first got my girl I thought 'big dope on a rope',but oh boy was I wrong!! She caught onto things real fast (when it suited:rolleyes:),and had an awsome ability to retain information.I did some clicker training with her and that's when it became really apparant how quick thinking she actually was, only ever had to do anything once and she knew exactly what I wanted the second time, and often used to anticipate what came next, very clever girl underneath the 'dope on a rope' exterior, truly quite amazing TBH.Have since know many other 'heavy' people say the same.
Like we said though is fine until they learn to use it to their advantage;)
[QUOTE=myfunkyhorse;2352831]Well I only got him in March and he had horrific mud fever and oozing sores in his feathers when I got him they stank so I had to clip them all off.. there now fully healed and growing back slowly I love full feathers :D
OOOOOOOOOOO bless him, I hope Wills dont get like that.....im scared x
Pig oil and sulphur will be your best friend when owning a clydie, they are VERY prone to grease heel, and various other nasties that lurk in the feathers!! Is always best to keep a regular check and treat feathers of heavies, have never met one yet that didn't have at least a little bit of crud from grease heel,or similar.
Will has shoes on because his last owner said his feet wern't good barefoot, his back ones have some chucks missing too. My ask a barefoot trimmer to see what he thinks xx ps thanks for the tips :)
Do have a word with a trimmer, most clydies have great feet.My mare had chunks missing when I got her,but that was from having been shod. Most hooves with chunks missing comes from either weakness caused by being shod,or feet not being cared for properly (allowed to grow too much flare etc and breaking under leverage),obviously hot,dry weather can cause chipping etc as well, but still very worth you having a chat with a trimmer:)
He came with full feathers but he had terrible sores and ooozing pussing legs they need to air so I clipped him out to get a better look at them to treat see pictures above in earlier post... he's now fully healed and i am growing the feathers back.
:)
Again pig oil and sulphur,no need to ever clip feathers again;):D,and I agree with what you said in earlier post, hairy legs look so much better on these types, hope it grows back well!!

I decided, one evening, to try and see if Arwen could give "kisses" (taking treats out of my mouth - God knows why I thought of that! :o). After a few shaky moments, she was picking it up, even though she knocked the apple chunks out of my mouth more than she managed to get it!
Imagine my surprise one night, when her owner, as he was bringing her in for her tea, flung the lead rope over her neck and let her make her own way into the yard. So, over she came, trotting merrily (and Arwen was usually VERY merry!) over to us as we stood in the yard. She made a beeline straight for me and lifted her nose right up to my face - even though I had no food anywhere near!!
Not so daft as we all thought she was - as you can see for yourself! :D
