View Full Version : Took the plunge and rode Rupert again today!

Sorry - long again!
As you can tell from my previous thread http://www.newrider.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19371
I was in two minds whether Rupert was ready to bring back into riding. I didn't want to rush things and spoil everything but on the other hand I didn't want to build riding up into a big 'issue' with him. And, what I didn't mention on the last thread. he needs exercise - he is so fat he is circular (fatter than all the shetlands:rolleyes: ) and lunging gets him very hyped up and silly.

So I decided as he was going well on the ground today I'd cut to the chase and ride with the option of stopping at any time, even during tacking up - if he was upset.

However his good behaviour continued under saddle:D He tacked up fine (tied up after my discovery that anyone holding him - particularly a man - upsets him) and was quiet as a lamb. We ended up riding in his french link snaffle again as the hackamore was too big and I had forgotten the hole-punch:rolleyes: so I thought I'd give it a go.. I brushed him and then tacked up slowly so that he didn't get flustered. When he was ready I asked him for some of his turns he has just learnt (moving away from pressure) as he likes doing those. As expected that cheered him up no end:D

Would have managed to mount unaided off a handy rock but he kept fidgetting so I enlisted 'scarey man' to help as unobtrusively as possible! Oh and I wouldn't normally need a rock to mount a 13.2hh but I am suffering rather with a bruised/broken coxcyx (?sp - tailbone..) so am not as supple as usual. If I look a bit stiff in the photos it is due to my delicate behind:D :D

Anyway we spent about 20 min messing about outside the field and inside it on the track. He worked really well (for him - ie we had no tantrums, and he went where I wanted 99% of the time!). I didn't ask for any 'work' as such I just pottered and did a few twists and turns and circles and a trot at the end -which I was very pleased with. He was fine with his bit - I kept a loose rein anyway. His steering has improved radically since I have been teaching him to move away from pressure as I now can use leg aids which were previously useless (he just didn't understand) so that I can ride him properly.

Anyway I'll let the photos speak for themselves as I have rambled on for long enough! :D

Here we are tacked up and looking cheerful. He is wearing his australian stock saddle and breastplate etc.

'Oh my goodness mum - what is that!!!!' It turned out to be a sheep so he was quite happy (he lives with 200 of them so they are not really a novelty:D ). I am not holding the front of the saddle as it looks like in this photo:D

Hooray for Rupert :) Personally I think that as long as anything you're doing is met with relaxation or calm, then there's no reason to hold back. As long as you're maybe pushing his comfort zone but NOT going past it, you most likely will benefit from it.

Still cheerful - I have never seen him ride happily like this! Appalling photo of me ... I don't really look as bad as that in real life :( or at least I hope not:D At least in this one you can see the bodyprotector which is making me look huge and hunchbacked under my jacket in all the photos:D

Sorry Maverick I will try to be more upbeat next time;) I do get paranoid that I am too big for him (especially as he is not a cobby type) and anything that makes me look bigger makes me worry that I look huge on him in the photos. I know I shouldn't worry as he carries me easily and I am only 5ft tall. But I still get paramoid occasionally about what people will think...

Helencheshire - his saddle is incredibly comfortable and very secure as it has poleys on the front which are designed to help when going up and down steep slopes - they also help combat sudden spooks (not that he really does them anymore but he used to).

I am very pleased with him if a bit sore today....riding with a broken/bruised tailbone (not going to try and spell its proper name again!) is not to be recommended...and yes of course I injured it off a horse (not Rupert though)..don't know whether it is broken/bruised as I haven't been to see anyone about it - after all they can hardly put my bum in plaster can they:D

Oh and Cochise - no we don't live near a coast we live as far inland as you can get. The water you can see is a lake (or lough as they are called around here). We live right on the Roman Wall if you can place that on a map of the UK:D

To help your geopgraphy, we live right in the middle of the line of Hadrian's Wall on this map:D
