Anyone else done this? I made my old pony a rug from a sleeping bag over 20 years ago, and I decided to make a quilted rug for my new horse ... I bought a king size "double" quilt in Lidl for €29.99, it's two quilts, a thin one and a medium one that clip together to make a heavy quilt, so I'm getting 3 for the price of one!

this is one ...

I've dyed the light one black, although it came out a bit patchy, I used a dog collar to make a fastner for the front.

I bought a turnout, a fly rug and a light "show" rug as well as the ones I'm making. I'm turning a king size sheet into a summer sheet for him, and a cotton bed throw into a lightweight rug

I'm going to use velcro on the sheet and cotton throw to fasten them at the front.

What size is your horse? I was thinking about doing this but was wondering if 6'6" is just too big for a duvet? I am inspired by your amazing work!!

My mum did this for my mine when I was a kid. I had a stable rug made out of a sleeping bag and she actually bought some canvas and made a new zealand rug for our foal, lined, proper fastenings the lot!
She also made some numnahs, although they weren't so cool. I looked like a pikey at the local show :-(

Thanks! He's about 6'4"/6'6" but I've been told to get him 6'9" rugs, a king sized duvet/sheet is plenty big, the duvet I got was 200cm x 200cm or there abouts.

Grrrreat I am off to the shops to buy a duvet then, it will entertain me at least during my lazy days even if it does go completely wrong.

Would it be possible to make them into turnout rugs by sewing canvas or similar onto it? I so need to get a sewing machine

(Penneys if you're in Ireland) Yup, or second hand/charity shops as well ... :)

You'd need an industrial strength sewing machine for canvas I think - or at least very strong needles, unless you can find someone who does sewing and would have the right equipment...

I think I had that book! I remember having one that showed you how to make a 3 colour velvet browband anyways ...
