I love riding bareback except for the dirt.
I actually got over my fear of jumping by going bareback , I know rather stupid but it really helped because I made sure I was balanceed. If I wasn't ballanced I fell off. I then used to technique in the saddle and was jumping over 3ft in no time.
I also love how you get the real feeling of the movement of the horse and you feel so much closer to them. i just don't like the fact that I am more likely to slip off esp when my pony has a big barrel as a tummy!

I love bareback riding. Like Maverick said, you can feel the movement better. But I too have a problem with slipping. I usually end up grapping a bunch of mane. :)
We ride bareback to the barn after going to get the horses from the pasture, and sometimes we ride them bareback to cool them off, and sometimes just for fun. :)

ok thanks. I am thinking of starting to school my 3 year old bareback. We have a few basics down. Stopping, walking, turning, back. I am just scared to trot on him! Will I hurt his back? He is only 3.. but he has taken everything else so good lately.

Bareback riding is good fun, and good for your balance, and it helps you feel what's going on underneath you. However it can sometimes encourage you to grip up with your legs, and it also means your horse has to take all your weight on your seatbones rather than its being spread over the bearing surface of a saddle (so it's probably just as well that we tend to slide about a bit). It has its good and bad points.
I used to ride bareback quite a lot when I had saddle problems, purely because it was the lesser of two evils; given the choice I'd do it occasionally for fun, but not for long periods of time or very regularly.

I rode only bareback for, uh, can't count the years. It was all I knew.
It was hugely important in helping me to develop a good seat.

I'm just backing my 3 year old and I'm doing it bareback. She seems to enjoy it, and I'm not heavy or slipping about. We only do it for about 15 minutes one day a week. I love bareback! :D

I love riding bareback, although I'd do it more often if my horse had a better topline!

I am the worst nervous rider you have ever met lol and i recently rode a few different horses bareback on the main roads, yes i was scared and it was great fun walking, trotting was different was downhill ( not my choice was horses ) and i found it so hard to sit up straight properly lol but i did it and i never fell off !!!
Although i have to say that for comfort ( as all horse had very spiney back) i would prefer to ride long distances with a saddle, makes you walk really fuuny for a few days after bareback riding lol
if i can do it anyone can
