Hi, i have just brought a new pony who is fantastic. one of the things hes good at is jumping only thing is im not to good at jumping, so i need some jumps to practise (as there are none where i keep him) but i have found they are really expensive so im looking to make my own.

i just want the basic up right practise stands (like these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SHOW-JUMP-PAIR-OF-PRACTICE-STANDS-4FT-NEW_W0QQitemZ110422781204QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Horse_Wear_Equipment?hash=item19b5b5ed14&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 )

so can any one give me the dimensions like the space the holes should be apart the width it needs to be to put the cups on ect.

also any other ideas on how to make them would be much welcome or maybe some pictures of jumps other people have made by them selves.

i will proabably be using round tree steakes for poles, just saw off the pointy bit or see if i can find any branches.

thanks in advance

I got some oil drums, like big barrels they are really good to prop poles on. And i went to my local garden centre and got rustic poles :) Also drain pipes are good and you can spray them. I will get pics of mine 2morrow :D

there was a thread a couple of months ago on the cafe area where someone ahd made their own jumps, they looked great i cannot remeber who it was thought sorry.
i think the distanced between the holes is a inch but it can varey, put them at heights that will suit you

hi - my oh made me a great selection of jumps ranging from upright to double and treble spreads and a selection of various fillers - will get you some pics later and it they the sort of thing you interested in i will measure them all up for you - i know he made 6 uprights - 2 x double spreads, 1 x treble - 2 x wooden fence like fillers as well as a variety of fillers that i painted. whole cost - under £70 - i know he used 2 x 2 for the main sections and the local wood yard was having a sale of the wood they use on patios etc -all i did was wood preserve it all (most of it was preserved but where the cuts made needed doing) and paint hte fillers in bright colours.

pics will follow this eve

Have you considered using tyres? You can get old ones free from local garages etc as they have to pay to get rid of them. The can be used to put poles on or as a jump just put 2 high either end and the stand tyres up inbetween.

I found all my jump poles (large conifer branches) on the bonfire ready to be burnt. Couldnt believe my look, some were so staright and perfect. Dragged them off the pile, cut the small bits off and they look very rustic.
Try local garden maintenance people and see if they ae cutting any trees. They also have to pay to dispose of rubbish so should be willing to let you have them.

Also local garden centres etc have border fences which are about a foot high and make beautiful fillers.

here are pics as promised - BUT PLEASE be careful using plastic drain pipe as poles - they are extremely brittle esp when stood on by horse and will and can shatter very easliy leaving sharp edges and parts breaking off - i tried them as a cheaper option a few years ago and would never do so again after had pony land on it and shatter it - visions of sliced legs and panicking pony ran through my mind - get wooden poles - ok dearer to begin with but cheaper than the proper horse plastic poles (which are made in way no similar to drainpipes )

edited to add - with the double and treble i am able to use either 2 or 4 jumps cups instead of 4 and 6 as i can place pole across the lower sections.

as others have said tyres are good and cheap - i also have some traffic cones ( they followed me home one day as they were real sad just sat at side of road and wanted a worthwhilst existance rather than be shouted at by car drivers)
milk crates arer also great for making low jumps
and of course we have the bales of straw - ok heavy to move about but a great jump

Bale covers are great for 'wall jumps' I have a few at home, just throw them over some straw bales and hey presto!

Oil drums with cup holders are great - I got mine free at a scrap yard. Tyres make good jumps too - normally free from places like Silverstone or garages as they have to pay to dispose of them!
