View Full Version : Would you put 13/14 stone on an 'average' build TB ?

Sorry I realise this is a very BIG generalisation, but looking through some adverts (am horsey hunting again for someone) would you consider 13/14 stone (MAXIMUM rider weight) to much for your typical TB ? Said friend is 5ft 10 so after a decent size horse and we have been looking at TB types, but now she is considering herself to big perhaps for a TB type, but I thought she would be ok ?

What about a WB cross ? Or as a general rule would you only put someone of that weight who is after a horse (friend wants to do a bit of dressage and low level eventing) on a cob or HW Hunter type ?

I myself (and I have limited experience) would have thought she was round the 'normalish' range for someone her height, she's not a complete novice but is (by her own admission!) 'Couldn't go round Badminton without needing brown jodphurs ! :o'

Thanks for any help.

depending on the type of TB it is then yes i would put them on it, and no i would not confine someone that weight [ IE me] to a HW or a cob:)

jay is a MW idxtb and can happily carry that and more

Depends my mum weight that once, she was fine and didn't look big on my horse at all, but before I brought my horse the owners husband used to ride him, he was a big bloke, 14stone and I would never let him ride him if it was me, he had a dipped back by it and was only just 3 years old.

People hold their weight differently

depends really. Id maybe look at a crossbreed but its up to how she holds it. Im the same height (well, slightly taller) and 10st and I wouldn't ride my TB if I got to 14st, not because i believe it would be wrong but i feel big height wise on my 16.2hh mare anyways and I wouldn't feel comfortable.

my old horse was TBxID, but mainly TB (seven-eighths bred) and she'd carry a LOT more than 14 stone. Average TBs carry 12stone + round point-to-points and much bigger men out hunting, so if she wants a TB type, I am sure she'll find one to carry her.

How about a Welsh Cob x Thoroughbred?

They look fantastic, can turn their hooves to anything and can probably carry a little more weight.

maybe not a flat bred, their bone is so light. maybe a NH type TB or a TB x. TBXID is a great cross, they are more stocky but also just as athletic as a pure TB when it comes to showjumping etc. or TB x Cobs are nice, they are very smart looking horses usually.

One of the racehorse rehabilitation places said on their website they prefer riders under 12 stones. For those types I think that is probably about right, but there are heavier types of TB and crosses that would be more than suitable.

i would say she would be better on a warmblood type personally.

It's quite a tricky one :/ People carry their weight differently, and generally more balanced riders are kinder to a horses back. I would say a TB of fairly good bone wouldn't have any trouble carrying her, but a finer type might struggle a little. They aren't exactly great weight carriers, but your friend isn't that heavy in my opinion. Suggest she tries a TBx, you often still get the looks/ movement of a TB, but more bone :)

Your friend should be fine but she'll never know unless she tries eh? Wishing them luck with their search.

Also bear in mind that a skilled, balanced rider of that weight will also be carried a lot easier than a novice of the equivalent weight.

No I personally would not put 13/14 stone on a TB. What about a tbxid?

i wouldnt either! Agree with others that a TB X warmblood/welsh/ID would be better! or even friesian! theres some nice crosses about!

I rode plenty of different TB's when I returned to riding when I was 14 stone and none of them had any trouble carrying me! They were hard working school horses too.

To be honest, there seems to be an obsession with weight when it comes to riding these days and people seem to think that 14 stone is just enormous and just oh so too heavy! (I blame the media, celeb culture, whatever).

I think you'll find that they'll be a few out there that will be happy to "carry" her weight!

Wishing her luck in her search.

It all depends on the horse and how the rider rides. My old TB was a very slight chap and at 15.1 I wouldn't have put someone of that weight on him, however his field-mate was also a pure TB and at 16.2 and with heavier bone I think he would have carried a decent rider up to 14st no probs at all. I'd say don't limit yourself, look at each horse individually rather than rule out all TBs as there are some bargain ones out there just now! Good luck with the horse-shopping :D

Couldn't have put it better myself. Horses are more capable than we sometimes give them credit for! Don't forget it makes a difference when it comes to what kind of work they are doing, and how fit they are.

If she will feel uncomfortable herself riding a tb then go for a tbx, I have an ISH and she would happilly carry that weight all day. Shes about 7/8ths tb but is from National hunt stock crossed with ID. Plenty of speed for the eventing but a bit more solid than your average tb.

it depends on the horse, i have a HW cob whos 15hh, i would not put more than 14 stone on her, she has a dipped back and is getting on in age, plus i also limit the height of rider, if they are too tall they end up putting too much weight to the back of the saddle for her. so try all horses and assess them during the ride!

i would have no trouble putting a 14 stone person on a fit healthy TB
only time i'd worry was if said TB was v fine built, unfit or used to only carrying 7stone people!

I agree it depends so much on the horse. I've got a 15hh HW cob who is 12, fit healthy and really solid legs. I'd happily let 14st of decent balanced rider ride her, in fact she carries 14.5 stone round the woods when my OH rides her and they are always the ones galloping up front. However my friend has a 15hh welsh who is getting on and there is no way that he could take 14stone happily. It really depends on the horse, have a look at loads and if she thinks they are too small then walk away and look at another. I wouldn't rule out tb all together just some tb's are finer/older/less fit/dipped back etc etc than others.:D:D:D
