Well i know some of you like these, and im hoping your going to make me feel better by over guessing so here it comes
2 call out charges
2 horse consultations
1 animalintex
15 norodine granules
22 equipalazone sachets
so would you think?
also if its the same problem for both visits, should you be charged 2 consultations, as they know what wrong the second time, as i always thought the consultation was the time the vet spent finding out whats wrong.

I dont think you should be charged for 2 consultations.
How long was the first?
Going by my vets:
Approx £35 call out = £70
Approx £15 consultation = £30
But I have no idea about the rest.
Less than £200?

£237?
I think it's about £40 for call out with my vets - I'm assuming it's not an out of hours callout? Otherwise more up to £300?

no neither was out of hours and no both wrong so far :)

if the vet had to come out to see the horse, its a consultation!
around 2-300 I'm guessing?

I know for a fact it is $800. That's because every vet bill I've ever had is $800 - no matter what. Sucks when it was routine vaccs, but I'm hoping my luck will hold when it's an emergency colic surgery with extended horsepital stay.

Hi, I hope it's low. What was the problem, is your horse ok now?
Can I just hi-jacking your thread to see what I should be charged for my mare for spasm/gas colic last week
1). Call out fee 5pm Sunday
2). Painkiller/ sedative
3). Internal/external examination consultation
4). Bute injection
I havn't been billed yet and this is my first vet experience. I'm hoping under £150???

30th Aug 2009, 07:29 AM
I would say about £250 and I don't think you should be paying for
2 consultations if they knew it was the same problem, I guess IF there
was any doubt then its only right they came to examine the Horse again.
ginakatie, I think you too are looking at around the £250 mark especially
if it was an 'emergency call out' on a Sunday, maybe even more tbh:rolleyes:

I think personally that a second consultation is needed, infact everytime a vet gets called out to treat a horse. The vet needs to do a second consultation to see whats up, and i see you said he already knew, then he needed to check everything was still the same and nothing new had effected this injury or if something had changed with the horse. If something new had appeared but the vet didn't check and then gave you the same medicine then the something new might not agree or be att all effected and get worse.
At college we used to have to do a consultation every single time we did a treatment on a client even if we had been seein them for ages but we had to, to make that the things we were using were srtill ok for that client. I did do beauty but you can kinda see where im coming from :P
Sorry i rambled on sooo much ... opps :s

Some vets love to pile it on.
You pay for them to turn up and then pay for a few minutes of their time. You are hardly likely to call them out if you do not want them to look at the horse when they get there so why the charge? If the visit involves the vet being there for some time I can understand it but this is usually not the case.
Having said that I have had one out twice in one evening/night to a colicky horse and the final bill came to just under £120 including medication so they are not all milking it.
In your case I would guess £200 assuming the 'consultation' was only a few minutes.
(Wish this is way too high)

Well when I called the vet out for Nadia it was for
2 call outs, one was out of hours

1 ultrasound scan
20 bute
sedative
gamgee
it came to £300.

you pay for call out-i.e the vet coming to you-covers petrol plus the upkeep of car that he uses and his time to drive out.
Then the consultation is for his professional skill.
then treatment.
simple enough when you break it down!
I dont see anything milking it in previous post, if you call the vet out you pay for their consultation.

I would say about £250
well done just short of £3, it came to £253 and i have her out again tuesday for his second tetnus
i really need to win poker tomorrow :D

i have to disagree, it doesnt cost them £32 to drive 20 mins down the road, and even with car ins its way over the odds.
as for consultations, £25 for her to tell me its infected, i knew it was infected, the pussy discharge was a bit of a give away, i told them on the phone what was wrong.
the second consultation was for her to check out wether the infection had gone, she had a squeeze and said carry on for another week to be sure, she did grab one of the chucks and had a feel of her legs as she was limping, so maybe i should blame the chicken :D

ok i have no idea so i will guess £195 my last thought it would be about £80 and wad was £8. 79 my neaxt was sure to be over £100 and is £69 between them 2 call out 2 lots of pain killers and overall inspetion and about 45 min of vets time each time
Kit
30th Aug 2009, 06:25 PM
actually, 20 mins is far enough to cost in petrol and the vets time to get to you, I pay 30 quid and I'm only 10 mins down the road! Don't forget buying the car in the first place.. you could always take the horse to them.
so both times she examined the horse. ie 2 x consultations.
Vets are not earning a lot of money, although it may seem like it when we pay the bills, the majority of the bills go on maintaining the practise facilities (building, car, equipment) and I have never yet seen a vet in any more than an 'ordinary' car!
Would they not have given you the antibiotics then if you knew what it was? I would normally in that sort of case (e.g for lymphangitis) ring up and go and get a/b

has just cost me hundreds for one horse so i sympathise
feel a bit cross about my latest bill for a different horse though!
unluckily she didnt injusre herself on a day the vet was already coming to see the first horse, typical! but £170 for 3 stitches made me wince as much as the horse probably did! (of course also NSAIDs and antibiotics addded in the price too)

oh i do feel for you loopy, i had her out again today for his flu and tet, so im keeping figers crossed and so is the vet that this is the last time they have to meet, every time she comes to the yard its tipping down with rain, so im guessing with todays, im looking at £300 odd, i didnt even pay that for buying pill or tilly

know what you mean...
ME, on phone...mares cut herself, it needs stitching
VET, looking at mare...yes, it needs stitching (thankyou £18 to diagnose that!) (thats £4.50 a word, lol)
im not a one to get the vet out for any little thing, but even not being a vet i can see that a dirty great hole through the skin and seeing muscle underneath is going to need darning :)

sorry but that did make me giggle, it is true though, it def feels like your paying them to speak, maybe il take a note pad with me next time and ask her to write it down, well she came out yesterdy to give him his flu and tet, and she was literally in and out, although she did check his jaw which she is happy with and even thinks its gone down a little yippiee, im def not paying no consultation charge for it, and il fight it out too if i have to, the first 2 il pay but def not for yesterday if they try it. got to go down and pay it off today  :( :( :(

you need a prescription off your vet
i dont know if everything is cheaper, but as you arent paying the vet practise mark up i would say a lot of things are cheaper
for example equipalazone, ive been being charged £1 per sachet = on net £43.50 for a hundred= less than 50p per sachet.

my boy is having face problems too!
the vet recons that he had a kick as a youngster and one side of his jaw line is thicker than the other side, and she also felt a small spliter under the skin in te first vetting which she just put it down to a splinter of bone, which wasnt causing him any trouble, until i put him in with my boy a few months back, for them to get to know each other and i think hes knocked it and it got infected, so it is the infection wev been tending too, but the vet thought wed hve to have an xray and go in and get it out, if it hadnt sorted itself out, but thankfully it seems to have sorted itself out, phhewww, xray would have been another £250 and another 4 weeks antibiotics, plus call out as i havnt tried travelling him since the trailor incident, i cant wait to find this guy a new home, hes so lucky hes such a charming, lovable guy :D

My vet has to come out from the next village, it is so close I could walk my horse over there (although not allowed due to their insurance) they are going to charge me £29 + VAT for the callout and minimum £20 + VAT for the consultation. That is £50 without anything, I think that is ridiculous. I wouldn't even say it is a 5min car journey, it would be if they went the long route, it does not cost £30 for petrol and upkeep of car for that!!
These vets charged me £170 to put my horse down, it wasn't like it was a hard time for me. Although it was a sunday callout.
Vets are ridiculous, i'm actually going to look into a vet further away as if I get charged the same callout I won't feel such a mug as they would have come further.
