Just after reading the other bad back thread it makes me wonder how many riders have bad backs.

I have curvature in my spine which gives me a sore back and because of that it my hips and shoulders are squint, so they have bad days too!

In my AS level year, a lot of lying around and weak core muscles gave me unbearable back ache: I had to have physio but most of it was DIY home exercises (pelvic floor muscles etc) that I am supposed to continue for the rest of my life. After riding I was often in agony for hours. I would find it difficult to sleep, but mostly the discomfort was aches rather than actual pain, and I put up with it despite long working hours in a poor environment (i.e. no break & unable to sit down). Then one day at work I bent over slightly to pick up a mob bucket and an agonising pain shot through my back. I have never been in so much pain before and could barely stand up - hence the trek to the physio! However when I temporarily stopped riding (:() did my exercises, quit that job and stopped lying around revising, it got better. I still have ocassional twinges but nothing major - however I feel that this may be because the true cause of the pain has been unprovoked due to my lifestyle changes. I was 16/17 years old at the time the back pain first started, healthy - it can happen to anyone.
I cannot stress enough the importance of getting yourserlf immediately checked out. Because my mum thought I was making a fuss about nothing, and due to me "put up & get up" attitude, I put up with a lot of pain & discomfort that sometimes drew be to tears of frustration, lost sleep & probably worse exam results, when I should have just let myself accept hat I deserved & needed help! I am a great believer in being proactive and not putting up with things you can change - so get immediate help! Don't let yourself believe that you're just making a fuss about nothing, or that it will just go away; because it won't. As in my case, it got worse.
I have also been mucked around by my devil of a doctor; he wasn't proactive, didn;t understand, was completely unsympathetic, claimed that I was making a fuss about nothing & then misdiagnosed me!

i get really bad spasms in my back. It can get so bad, i cant straighten up. Went to a physio but they fobbed me off with muscle weakness and gave me some exercises to do. Did them, but its not really any better. Told the physio and they just shrugged it off and said i was fine.

I've had lower and middle back problems since a fall as a teenager. Luckily my OH is a physio and can give me acupuncture when it is really bad:) and I just have to keep doing my exercises and stretches each day.

Having had surgery not that long ago I now find my back has improved I am still sore most days but I can sit/stand up straight, stand/walk/be active for longer without pain and ride better lol.

Mines was just an unlucky accident but then again we all know what we are doing riding horses its just unfortuante i couldnt fall how I wanted/normally do.

You shouldt let a bad back stop you from enjoying life.

I have hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and the discs in my back pop and crunch and slip around at will  Gives me horrible muscular pain and spasms. I look a bit like Quasimodo today as I've got a lump where my C5 vertebrae has decided it doesn't like it's usual position and the movement has caused some swelling. Ick!

I really need to get back into regular riding again as it helps me maintain my posture and strengthen the muscles in my lower back which is my weakest area. EDT comes out on Tuesday, then should be having a saddle fitting at the end of the week, so hopefully by next weekend, I'll be back on board! :D

Classed as a bad back i suppose, i have had surgery this year back in february to fuse the base of my spine after previously having a disc done. I dont currently suffer any pain but it still gets a little uncomfortable but thats the wound healing apparenty but I will always have a 'bad' back. Not going to let it stop me tho...

Ive suffered with back problems since my over enthusiastic daughter made me ride 'thunder mountain' roller coaster with her 5 times in a row at eurodisney. Dont know what I done but since then I suffer bad backs that can flare up for no reason:mad: mainly after lots of hoovering or if its cold and Im not wrapped up. So far it has cause no problems with riding:rolleyes:

I do yes.
I suffer with trapped nerves in my Lumbar region. This is due to a riding accident when I was a little sprog - horse reared on the road, slipped and came over on top of me. **touch wood** for the last 5yrs it's been ok. It has it's moments but nothing like it used to. I find riding actually helps my back. If I get a trapped nerve, once it has free'd up and the pain is easing, lightly riding really helps it disappear :)

my back got bad when I was carrying a saddle at 19 yrs old, on and off its been agony
this morning it was fine, got out of shower and its aching, it goes into a spasm and pulls me out of shape
apparently 2 large discs are well worn and lean on a nerve if not looked after right, had an option to get one removed but opted out:eek:
I also have a severefood intolerance which affects my muscles, this also brings on backache and other joint ache
I need rubbed out and drawn again lol

Broke my back and now I can only ride smooth gaited horses like Icelandic's. Riding Dyfra makes my back feel better. (Can't say the same riding in DH wee Car...oouch!)
If I only had trotting breeds, I would no longer be able to ride.

I dont have back pain, however from a fall onto a xc fence  i have done something to my back which makes me sit wonky in the saddle and i walk uneven, which i havent realised untill it began to affect dee as it has caused me no actual pain. Other than the guilt pain that i had affected dees muscels in her to make her a bit uneven - so now me and dee both have physio done.

I have a compression fracture of my T12 which led to T11-T13 being fused. I also have Scoliosis and suffer siatic pain. Was told to never ride as a fall would be disasterous, but 7yrs on and probably more than my fair share of falls still going strong!! Pain/spasm most days but riding and physical work does make it stronger, just got to know when to stop!!

i have a weak left leg (i think) which pulls on my back when i walk resulting in pain when i sit down for too long, makes no sense does it lol but i had physio and had to do pilates and then stopped but i think its riding thats made it better, i still have my days where if i sit down for too long in a meeting or something i cant get back up without being in agony. Its ridiculous because this started when i was about 17 so i used to try and stand up like an old woman holding on to my lower back!

I also have a straight spine which apparently isn't good!!

I have had Scoliosis all of my life.. curve is 35% and that never stopped me from doing things. ;)

Said part is.. I found out I have Osto too... the week before the accident and I was told I shouldn't ride any more. :p

Now I wear a body protection vest.:D Which ..now thinking on it.. should of gotten as soon as I found out the results of the Osto test, then I would most likely not have broken my back as badly as I did. Ah Well...

Yup-quite chronic sometimes. Weirdly much better after quite a nasty tumble as Beau ran off at the block when I was halfway on! I've only had it since I got him-I'm convinced it's from having to fork the muck on to the trailer. (Either that or the weight I've put on:o)

yes i do but i think it has more to do with 5 days a week, gymnastics when i was younger, i had a nasty fall off the bars and landed on the parkie flooring on my back and neck, plus 2 nasty jumping accidents, plus the usual aches and pains of wear and tear.

i also just had 3" of coccyx removed in april and that hurts like a !!!! not as much as it used to hurt though, so hopefully that'll get better in time (surgeon reckons recovery will take a year or more)

Yeah I now wear a bodyprotector, although was pushed into it by others;):p. I didnt know anything bout Scoliosis untill I woke up one day and could hardly move, found myself flat out on the floor for 2days till I found a chiropracter, he reconned it had happened bout 4 yrs previous in a fall (bout 3yrs after brake) but because I'd trapped a nerve didnt noticed till I couldnt move anymore!! LOL!! But physical work, stretches and regular trips to chiropracter now keep it at bay.

I know loads of riders with back problems, some better than me some much worse. Its funny if you start asking around how many ppl do.

I am just recovering from a bad back. It has taken ages to get over it. And I did it doing something really simple - just putting my sock on. I was laid up in bed for 5 days and wasn't able to ride for 5 weeks. It is much better now but does feel much more fragile on certain days. Have started seeing a chiropractor and that has made a real difference.

I have had a bad back for about 10years now due to working as a vetinary assistant. I had to lift a German Shepherd onto the operating table and that was it..................... Back went:rolleyes:

Its not been right since and if I move or twist either the wrong way or too quickly i am sore again.

Even at this time of year, coming into the winter, it takes ages to get used to mucking out again!!!

If it gets reallybad I go to an accupucturist and that usually does the trick with a big glass of Bacardi :D:D:D:D

I've had a bad back since I was a teenager - I'm over 6'2" tall and at the age of about 13 shot up very quickly, this caused problems with my back - bones growing quickly and muscle couldn't cope!! Had problem ever since really, and this is aggrevated by the fact that I am tall - I haven't really helped it though, came off beginning of this year and damaged my sacroillic joint!!!!

Mine flares up periodically - last time I couldn't walk for 2 days as I couldn't move my right leg :o I had a course of Alexander lessons about 4 years ago though and since then I've hardly had any problems at all. Prior to that I'd had physio, which was just useless as I was told to "make sure I was sitting straight". Hmmm, difficult to have a concept of straight when it's a different straight to what I'm used to and therefore feels wonky. And, no, sitting in front of a mirror isn't exactly practical at work

I had a really bad back (spasms/days I could barely walk) from as early as I could remember until the day I went to see a sports therapist at 26. I've been sleeping on the floor since I was 20 otherwise I couldn't get up in the morning. (Still do, beds just don't do it for me).

Went to see one on a whim because I was tired of only being able to ride my horse for 15 minutes at a time and being in so much pain, and my posture bothered me. It's changed my life, that's for sure!

I now have no back issues and riding causes me no pain regardless of the horse's gait or length of time.

I'm glad I ended up with a sports therapist - he did what I had done to my horses - helped me fix my muscle insufficiencies/imbalances, then did some popping/relocation and massage to keep things in their new homes - and over the course of about six months I was a new person. I still have to keep up on the exercises, but it's worth a pain-free life. :)

I've had a sore back for years, but with help from my chiropractor, a decent warm up and some stretching before riding I tend to cope fairly well. Does anyone else spend time warming up before riding?

I broke L1,L2,L3 in April of this year so consider myself to have a bad back.. Mucking out is the worst thing, I seem to be fine with riding so long as I wear a back support (not body protector)
