I know, I know, a really random question but in all my years around horses I have never been kicked, Ive had a few near misses but have never been caught.
Is it as bad as I imagine cos as Im getting older I find I worry about things more as I cant afford to get hurt. So whats it like, part of me wants to get kicked to get it over with so I know what to expect but the sensible part of me is like 'no way':D

Only been kicked once and i think it was more shocking than anything at the time- It absolutely killed, and i had a black thigh for months!
Bit of a how long is a piece of string question tho;)
Some people have died from being kicked where as my kick didnt effect my life so there are many factors that would influence the pain level i guess:p xx

Depends where they kick you and how hard :p. I got caught by my share horse a month or so back; he was getting really wound up, stressy and spooky, and had broken away and run off up the field when I was trying to groom him. I walked up the field to catch him and as soon as I got near he launched off, spun round and lashed out - bam! Nice bruise on my thigh :p. To be honest it didn't actually hurt at all - I felt it and it wasn't exactly pleasant or comfortable ;) - but really didn't hurt much at all. Touching the bruise hurt and it swelled a fair bit but as he didn't get me hard, only sort of clipped me, and because it was on my leg rather than, say, my ribs, it wasn't that bad at all. Having said that, kicks can kill. It just all depends on the situation I suppose.
ETA: Share horse is also barefoot - that probably contributed to making it less painful too :p

Been kicked about 3 times. The first time a 11hh pony kicked me on the bum, didn't hurt. The second I ran up behind my unshod pony (don't worry, I learned my lesson ) and that hurt like mad. But the 3rd time I was kicked by a big horse and I was standing so close to him that it didn't hurt at all.
So I suppose it depends.

I was undoing leg straps on a naughty pony's rug and got my hand kicked, it hurt abit but it hurt alot more due to my Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, it jarred my wrist so badly I couldn't do anything with it for a couple of weeks lol. :p

I've been kicked in the shin, yes it hurt and I had to call a friend to help me shoo the other horses away and catch my horse, but I still got on and rode.
I've also been knocked over and trampled on. My leg and back hurt where the hooves landed after they swelled up, my shoulders and elbows hurt from how I'd fallen. Had to be taken to A&E but nothing broken and it hasn't put me off riding at all.
Don't worry about what might happen, but do take sensible precautions like hat/gloves/boots for handling strange horses etc. Oh, and keep some arnica gel handy in your first aid kit, stops injuries from swelling and bruising and provides good pain relied too.

I've only been kicked once and it was when I walked behind a 13.2hh lightweight pony. It hit me dot on my kneecap but I barely felt it; I was more surprised than hurt, and have never had any problems with it since.

Depends how hard I suppose.
Ive been kicked by a little section a in the thigh which hurt a lot and she left her mark lol. Then my arm got kicked whilst doing leg straps by a bigger 14.2 pony which didnt hurt much. I've had plenty of near misses too lol.
Worst pain i've ever had was when a clumsy 15.1 heavy cob trod on my foot and wouldnt move for about five seconds and now I have a permanent slice on the side of my foot!!:rolleyes:

I got kicked by my pony so hard that I was thrown across the stable and broke three ribs hitting the rug rail at speed! I also damaged all the ligiments around my left knee, my leg went up like a balloon I was in plaster for three months and was of work for 2 - 2/12 months and yes it hurt like buggery!

I've been kicked twice - once when my mare went to kick a horse going past her and I got in the way, which didn't hurt at all as she caught me with the flat of her foot and doesn't wear shoes - and once when I was turning out a friend's pony and he bolted, pulling the lead rope out of my hand and kicking out once he'd got free, catching me on the leg. It hurt, but not as much as I'd though it would - probably because he was heading away from me!

Same! No shoes and her hoof just fit neatly around my kneecap, barely felt it.
Never been kicked by a big horse with shoes on though, bet that would hurt!
I've been proper stamped on by a 14.2hh cob wearing shoes though, not just trodden - he spooked and actually stamped on my foot, went right through my vulcanised rubber boots, couldn't walk properly for days. I still think I got off lightly.

Yes!! I've only ever been kicked once and it was by a friends horse years ago when we we leading in from the field. Her horse went to kick mine and unfortunately got my thigh instead! Had a huge hoof sized black and purple bruise there for about 2 1/2 weeks!!

that would probably be impossible to judge as each person has different pain tolerence levels.
Never been kicked by a horse as far as can remember, and am not able to feel any body pain at all [through disability] so would only feel the pressure and no pain, but there are people who are at the opposite end of pain tolerance and the slightest knocks can be too much for them.
would say dont test it [getting kicked] because it can cause big problems inside the body, and could end up with a hospital visit out of it.

I had both barrels at me once, luckily only one leg got me and it was a tiny new forest foal, it didn't hurt as much as you would think, just a bit of a dead leg and I didn't even cry :D But i did have a black legs for a few weeks and the dent in my leg (muscle wastage) took well over a year to disappear.
I also got kicked by a cob smack on the side of the knee, hardly any force behind it, he must have been swatting a fly but I fell to the ground and cried like a baby! It was so sore yet didn't bruise at all
Also been stood on as well, totally not the horses fault I just fell over and some how ended up under it  That was just like a dead leg too.

yes, its a burning pain (well, IME) but its definately the shock that gets you more and actually the pain goes quite quickly leaving you with the pain from the bruise/broken bone/or maybe no pain at all if no damage has been done.

Ive been kicked Looooads of times but my main 2 are ( both from the same horse!! 16.2hh, ID X TB Big fat Mare [With shoes] ) Once in my shin, the hardest kick ever! And I still have problems with it now, after over 18 months.
And My worst was in my chest, She sent me flying across the barn (About 8 foot!) Broke my breast bone and a few ribs. My breast bone still hurts all the time, and like, cracks if I stretch  Evil horse.

Yes, got kicked in the thigh by a moody mare when doing her rug (my fault, I knew what she was like and wasn't thinking straight). It lifted me off the ground and I had a hoofprint on my thigh for weeks, fortunately she wasn't shod!

God:eek: reading some of these replies Im starting to wish I never asked:rolleyes:
Ive had my fair share of injuries, been dragged (leading), knocked over and stepped on and had my foot (always the same one) stood on numerous times but have so far never had anything serious enough to warrant a visit to A&E (touchwood), so maybe Im just lucky cos some people I know seem to be in hospital more times in one week than I have in my life:rolleyes:

Only been kicked by adult horses twice. It hurt like hell both times, but the worst of the pain goes away fairly quickly.
The first time was when I was putting spreading a straw bed in a stable behind an agitated mare - she was all wound up because the mare on, who was on the other side of the door between the two boxes, had recently foaled. She just kicked out in her excitement, catching me just above the knee. It was a one-off, entirely my fault for not seeing it coming and entirely not her fault - so no punishment needed or given.
The second time was when I was putting a tail-bandage on a visiting mare in preparation for covering. I had been warned she was a kicker and I was careful to stand to the side. She still managed to cow-kick me, catching me just below the knee. By the time I had recovered from the shock it was too late to do anything about it, and in any case I didn't want to unsettle her for the breeding.
I am very lucky neither kick actually landed on my knee - and neither mare was shod. That could have been much worse.
I've been kicked by foals in play a couple of times - raised some interesting bruises, but they didn't cause nearly the same flood of pain that the grown horses did.

Hmmm. first time I was kicked was when 16 and an 9hh pony kicked me square in back, it was achy. One pony kicked my hand (which was already in plaster at that point). Ouch.
One of the sorest of when sorting the back of a mare's rug when she double barrelled me in the ribs - def. ouch.
On an Arab Stud, I was kicked in the knee daily by one of the frisky yearlings. Eventually left as her aim was always my bad knee.

OMG hun are you ok now?? Not the lovely Lilly who kicked you surely??
Really hope all is well and not to much damage done, holding a good thought for you:)
Have to say have never been kicked by a shod horse thankfully,as think that is far worse and can do a lot more damage.
Have had a couple of non drastic kicks and just stung a bit for a few minutes TBH,nothing terrible, but weren't full on kicks really, just wrong place, wrong time.
My lad few weeks ago struck out with his front leg (not in a nasty way,was just showing impatience and didn't realise I had just bent down in front of him to take off his hoof boot!!),caught my shoulder with his hoof, that bl**dy hurt!! Very glad he doesn't wear shoes!! Never done it before or since,so just one of those things I guess, but was very sore for day's!!
Personally I got hurt more being bitten,at the time anyway, only ever happened to me once (I am meaning full on I mean it kind of bite, not a nip),and certainly made me squeal!!

Ouch, some painful going ons in here. Tiggerthepony, I hope you're okay? Do you reckon something spooked her?
Being kicked in the stomach more winded me than hurt, he got me with his hock.
Being kicked in the spine didn't hurt too much at first, ached afterwards.
Being kicked in the thigh stopped hurting almost immediately after...
Everytime has been when he's span and bolted whilst been led. He kicks out when he does this, silly pony!
Also got kneed in the head whilst oiling his hooves once, that felt odd for a while.

I didn't have a hat on-i was turning a horse out at an equestrian centre i used to work at and the horse reared up and got me on the way back down-i think!!!

I was kicked on the knee by another mare in front of me whilst riding my mare and that really hurt. However the pain did go away quickly with no drugs and i was left with an almighty bruise which i had to show off.

I've had a few kicks and most have been harmless ones that left a bit of a bruise at most but I did have one quite bad one when a 2 year old cob had a hissy fit and tried to double barrel me, only one foot connnected but it left a hole in my thigh and a huge bruise and it did really hurt to walk for a could of weeks but even that has healed with only a small scar and dent that cause no problems.
There's a few ways you can reduce the risk of getting hurt, learn where the safer places to stand are when doing stuff with a horse, if you have your own make sure they know kicking is not allowed and if someone else's horse is behaving dangerously its not your problem so don't take the risk.

Don;t know what caused it possibly a fly, no hat on but wouldn't have made a difference as got me under the chin! At least I know I can take a good punch!
It's so easy to become complacent with your own horse, Lily has never ever done something like that in he 3/4 years I have had her but just goes to show how something can make even the most unlikely to kick out!

I have never been given a 'real' kick with the full swing behind it, but have taken a couple of short range pops from weanlings and foals learning to lead, and they didn't hurt, the worst part was the "omg, did that foal just try kick me?" I've managed to dodge a few from ponies who didn't want to be caught with my ninja-like grace and agility...
I've been struck with a forefoot when a terrier ran up to me where I was standing with Skye and jumped up on my legs, so Skye walloped it with a newly shod foot and got me down the inside of my thighs from mid-thigh to knee. I was wearing jeans which didn't rip, but it took skin off anyway, swelled and bruised black and blue for a couple of weeks, though it only hurt for a few days. The dog was fine, just a streak of dirt down his back:rolleyes: cheeky sod!

im not sure whether to, but thats what she was saying....cant syay ive heard it before, but i can actually see how some kicks to certain places could cause damage in the long run that you wouldnt know about (just like kicks can cause internal damage and bleeding that we dont know about, hence why some people have died from severe kicks)....who knows, maybe its something to research.
might go and ask another radiographer when im next in the department lol

When I've been caught on the way up or down t's been uncomrtable but tolerable, but the one time I got properly booted I got a gash on my thigh - I still have the scar (nice neat little grass-tip shaped one!) and that was 12 years ago!!
