View Full Version : Bit snapped in half!

Today I was cantering up a field on my boy and went to slow him up a bit and his bit snapped in half! This of course spooked him and I found my self galloping up the middle of a mile long stubble field with the bit dangling down his cheeks. It literally snapped in to two pieces and each half was hanging from the cheek pieces banging him in the face (which really helped!)

I ended up bailing as after about 60 seconds of bolting realised he wasn't going to stop and we were heading straight for a really really rutty bit of ground. Smashed my head, couldn't remember a thing, was a loon for the next hour, didn't know where i was, what had happended, where my horse was (he'd legged it home thank god) cue trip to a and e to be told i was concussed.

I'm so annoyed, the bit isn't old and it wasn't cheap, imagine if we'd been on the rode and it had broken.. someone could have been killed!

Wow, that's scary. You might want to take that up with the manufacturers, actually, you really should take it up because they need to make sure that never happens again. I would have bailed too - glad you're ok

It was a centre revolver snaffle, looking at it now the revolver lozenge bit is held together by a screw type fasting.... dodgy. Will defo be tking it up with them, it could have been alot worse!x

The lozenge is the same as the below but mines a loose ring snaffle, not hanging cheek

OMG How terrifying! I saw that happen in a showjumping ring once - same thing - bit just snapped and horse took off. Rider also bailed out and was luckily not too badly hurt.

Definately contact Jeffries, they will probably want the bit back to examine. Make sure you take LOTS of photos of it, from every angle, before you send it, for your records.

I would be interested to know what Jeffries have to say about the matter. They should definately be interested, as they could be looking at a design fault or a faulty batch of bits. Scary.

I don't remember too much about it but remember the bit going and having an 'oh s***' moment! And then as we were heading for the bad ground i remember thinking 'right I'm getting off now!' and kicking my feet out of my stirrups! Good job I bailed as he p***** off all the way home and it's a good half mile!

I'm going to try and get hold of an address for them tomorrow, I want it examined, it could have been so much worse.I just keep thinking imagine if i had been on the road

When I looked at my hat later I must have landed right on the top of my head, the very top of the hat (where the bobble bit is on the highest part) was the only bit with loads of mud on it. Bloody god job I had it on (not that I would ride without one anyway!) but just goes to show what can happen, my boy is pretty good but that scared the life out of him. If i hadn't had it on i would have been seriously in trouble

I've seen this happen in a SJ ring, but luckily the horse stopped.

Oh my lord how scary! Poor you! Glad you and horse are okay.

Take lots of photos of the bit before you send it off anywhere. Jeffries should have a customer care line you can ring to let them know you''re posting a complaint etc. Keep us informed I am very interested to see what happens with this!

Oh and, saftey fist - go buy a new hat too!! :)

Glad that you are both ok and I hope that you recover from your concussion soon.

Will be interested to know what Jeffries have to say on the matter. Terrifying thing to happen and could have ended up so much worse too.

Yes it will indeed be interesting to see what Jefferies say.

I wonder will they say you must have been exerting too much force on the bit! That would be cheeky!

Quick update for you all, spoke to them this morning and they were not overly helfpul (not that i expected them to be delighted!) but have asked me to send it back to them. I have done a covering letter explaining what happended and that I want them to pay for my expenses incurred.

I've been advised to contact trading standards prior to sending the bit off to them so will do that tomorrow

Hope you're feeling a bit better, if i was you before you send the bit back to them, take some good close up photo's of it for your own records ( just in case ), good idea about contacting trading standards.

Not bad - apart from being covered in mud and a bit scratched up it looks ok.

Don't worry though - i realise it's not ok t use now! Saved me head tho - apart from having a bruised skull (nice) and concussion it served me pretty well me thinks

Well if a bit of mud broke your fall I suppose thats good:o, instead of hard ground. I can't imagine falling that bad then not remembering anything it'd be so scary:eek:

What helmet were you using? I watched a girl at my barn a month ago fall off my RI's huge Dressage horse over a jump(she shouldn't have let her ride him) and she didn't look like she fell hard but spent the rest of the time off and on crying:-(. I can't imagine what getting a concussion would be like
