In Hungary, a popular name for black mares / fillies is Hollo - which translated into English means 'Raven'.

I like the name Raven for a black mare. :)

I re-named my black gelding Jack,as had been watching school of rock starring Jack Black and seemed appropriate lol

Guess that not such a good name for a filly though (Jackie maybe??:p)

Raven is nice.:)

Storm
Guiness (or is that a bit more of a boy name??)
Pepsi
Satin
Velvet

have a black pony myself who is called holly. I was looking, like your friend for an appropriate (show) name.
Because of my poor linguo skills, however, i can only advise what not to use as 'sombre cheval' doesnt mean dark horse in french as in the sense of her colour, but 'miserable/gloomy' horse!!!:D
So now when we enter the ring i hope we never get a french speaking judge!
