I was thinking about it today - i cannot wait for winter!!!!
I get to muck out, clip, do rugs. It won't be too hot andit's never too cold! There'll be icey mornings and snowy morning. I absolutely love the winter!
Winter couldn't come soon enough!!

Snow?! Only if we're lucky !!
I quite like winter, its just the miserable, dark nights and all that rain that gets me. I like the cold, prefer it to heat anyway;)

Nope, I love the colder weather 'cause Lio's always super to ride when it's a bit chillier instead of his "It's too hot, I can't be bothered, I think I'll just play up and buck" attitude he's had over the past few weeks. He's being a star now its cooler again!
So, no you're not on your own, I'm looking forward to it too (and christmas, but I'll probably get shouted at for mentioning that this early.....)

now ride 10am so doubt it will be dark ever :(

We had loads of snow here last winter, not a lot of it was very deep but plenty to make snowmen and ride about in it!! :D
Okay so maybe it can be too cold, but i'd rather ride in the cold than in the heat. There's never too many layers!!
I am looking forward to going to the yard in the cold and rugging him up for the night, I love the smell of cold air when there's a bonfire somewhere near too!!!
I do know however, that once winter been here a week or two and I never feel warm, I will soon be hoping for summer again ;)

Certain aspects of winter I like! (not many!!!). I love the snow - its so remote where we live we get stuck (little bit of poetic licence as I have a 4 wheel drive now!!!) and when I get snowed up I can spend quality horse pampering time....hehehehehe.
One thing I really HATE and which scares me silly is strong wind! I have a real phobia about it - and it keeps me awake all night!!!!
Don't mind the cold tho, one can always put another layer on (I get to do my Michelin Man impression!!!)

Yeah i just love having to rug up and put them to bed rather than leaving them out. If i could i'd bring them in all year round :D i just can't wait.
I'm oging to prepare with some decent warm clothes this time!!

Yep, definitely invest in warm gear - I've been looking at what gloves to buy, I've seen some waterproof ones by Good Hands. They sound ok, I tried the Sealskinz last year but didn't really like them.

Hehehe, yes but cold winter mornings reduce me to childhood and I want to either: get dressed in bed:o:p:D Or put all my clothes on the radiator the night before then they're nice and warm to put on.......:D

I love winter :D! I can't wait :p! Although this would be my first winter with Toby - and bearing in mind how awake he is in the warmer weather, I'm expecting him to be just one hyperactive ball of fuzz all winter ;).

Oh good, I'm not the only one that does that then :o
I have also found that wearing jogging bottoms over your jodhpurs is the best invention ever. Keeps me toastie warm :D

You are not the only one looking forward to it, another livery said yesterday she couldn't wait. I hate the winter, cold and dark when I go to turnout, cold and dark when I bring in, slippery floor, hose freezes up so you can't do the water, gloves get wet so your hands get freezing, toes feel like ice when your riding.....nah, give me heat 24/7 365 days a year.

this year will be the first ALL the horses will be living out 24/7, i now have no looseboxes, so no mucking out and lovely deep warm beds, lots of shelter though
i will be needing to buy about a dozen new turnout rugs, faff around with big bale hay, and get night vision goggles or something!
and somr thermal underwear!
also i wont be able to clip anymore, boo because i like baldy horses that dont moult everywhere, yay, because its a faff...

Hate winter :( I like Spring & summer.
Hate dark early mornings, hate mud, hate hay (bloody stuff gets everywhere). Hate only being able to hack at weekends.
I don't mind the cold, or the rain - but the dark depresses me muchly :(

i hate the strong winds and the heavy rain but i do enjoy being around the horses when it's cold. i think they appreciate you more as well when it's cold and they get more attention (well mine do!) as i spend alot of time cuddling them! :D

No not really... getting up in the morning when it's dark and I can't get out of bed, not being able to hack until the weekend, or ride in the fields because no floodlights. I get home later because if I want to use the school I have to wait for lessons to finish.
Dark when I get to work, dark when I leave work. I get about an hours daylight at lunchtime and it's horrid.
Like others have said, rain and cold is fine, but the dark it a major hindrance.
Oddly enough I would love to visit the Arctic circle in winter, experience total darkness all day and night.

Absolutely nuts
Mine has pretty much been in at night and rugged all summer anyway- winter will only bring less hours in the day, mud and REALLY restricted t/o at our yard.
then there's the ice, mud fever frozen taps expensive hay/feed bills manky muddy ponies and filthy clothes, not to mention my poor little car  weirdo!

Well hopefully one other good point this winter - two things: I will have a school - yaye! ANd, hopefully both will be able to be turned out (Joe on 6 months box rest last winter!!!! which meant Storm wouldn't go out without him). So am really hoping that their winter paddock will be fenced in time (funds permitting) and that they can at least have 6 hours a day or so. (Bear in mind this is a huge improvement on last years 20 minutes twice a day in hand).

I love the sound of the crunch under your and your horses feet, I love wrapping up warm and wrapping your horsey in it's pj's, I love breaking the ice in their buckets, I love mucking out while sliding around trying to control the wheelbarrow, I love going down to see them with icciles on their whiskers :p
I love watching them after you just turn them out and they gallop off in the snow with the spray in your face. Most of all I love sitting in the stables with a nice cup of coco and a big warm hug from your ned :D and also Chayla actually wants to work because it's cooler than summer

Hmm,certain aspects of winter I like.
Love: that there's no flies (no more getting eaten alive whilst riding yay!!),that it's not too hot for horse and me to ride.knowing what to do about rugging (straight foreward in winter, unlike summer where can be boiling one day,and horrible the next, and constantly putting on and taking off rugs!!),knowing he's tucked up warm and snug in his stable when weather horrid.
However,I hate: the tie of having to bring in and turn out at set time, the extra costs of hay and bedding, having a muddy pony, the hassle of either clipping or having a sweaty pony, and if really cold and icey like last year, really hate the terrible driving to yard and riding conditions.Oh yeah and really, really don't like being cold and wet.
That's really depressed me now lol:rolleyes::p

In a way I'm looking forward to it.
The bits I'm looking forward are:
I get to use my newmarket excercise sheet (which I love)
I love the smell of haylage
I like the frosty morning hacks when noone else is about
The snowy days (which are few and far between)
The bits I don't want to come round:
The feeding 3 times a day, which costs a lot more then summer feeding
The rugging, its ok at first and then gets annoying, I'm not particually strong and I'm short so hate having to put rugs on a 16hh TB
The rain and wind, because I just hate it.
And also, when you go inside after mucking out and your nose practially explodes with snot :p

I must say im quite looking forward to winter, i love rugging them up on a cold night and putting them in their nice warm stables :). I love frosty mornings and drinking hot chocolate from a flask after mucking out, i also can not wait till christmas, its my fav time of year :o, although it does annoy me when they advertise it soooo god damn early .
But i do have to say i dont like rugging up and turning out between 20 and 30 horses a day and i hate the wind and rain. I know once ive had a few months of winter i'll be begging for summer, us brits are never satisfied lol .

I love the cold dry and snowy days but you can keep the gales, mud and torrential rain!
I love the beginning of September normally as I start bringing the ponies in and get to start light ruggiing...I say normally as this year the weather is worse than usual and my starw and hay haven't been delivered yet:mad: No point my hay man coming till the straw turns up so I guess they will be out a bit longer till I can get the horse box to a straw supplier x
I love mucking out the stables and filling the haynets and buckets ready for the night times. I like to do it first thing and then it looks nice and cosy all day ready for the babies!

Never too cold? Crikey! It was -5 most mornings in Feb here and the taps all froze so we had to do water changes the night before and I couldn't feel my fingers. I put them in hot water one day to defrost-stupidest thing to do and the pain was really extreme!
I will appreciate it being more social in the mornings otherwise I'm alone but in winter, there are others turning out early etc.

I just love that there's nothing more motivating than a delightfully sunny yet crisp-ice cold morning for a good hack round the block and then a muck out session afterwards. :D
I'm such a winter freak, but I don't care!
I just despise having to scrape my car of a morning.

I also love the winter :D I love the fact that you can snuggle up to get warm but when its too hot is so hard to cool down, and when the winter sun is shining go for a lovely hack and finish it off with a nice warm cup off tea, which is normally nicked by my boy :D:p

Last winter it snowed then partially thawed and refroze constantly. The school froze over so couldn't school, the water pipes down to the fields burst so the paths were like an ice rink so couldn't turn out, I risked a few short hacks but the ground was so slippery. Connor hated being shut in his stable for so long, his joints stiffened up and he started to weave.

Another one for winter. I love bringing my mare in from the field when we can't even see where we going as it's pitch black. Only I have moved yards now and she is out with others so I'll no doubt be bringing in someone elses horse!
But I love wrapping up being warm having a day down the yard, riding out and taking my dog out and then coming home to my warm home and putting the fire on with a hot drink (though normally it's green tea! hmm... may have to change that to something else)

Do you know I was starting to think I was the only person in the UK who actually LOVES the autumn and winter!
When I got my first neddy at the end of last year everyone said 'if you can stand it now, summer will be a doddle'. WHAT WERE THEY TALKING ABOUT!!!
Bloody flies! The damn heat! Fly spray! Sun cream!
The autumn and winter are so atmospheric! I see the pics people put on here of the colder months and they are just stunning!
This year I have my own fields and am without water and electricity so things may be a bit difficult on an evening when it is feeding time etc!
My OH has already bought me a headtorch (windupable too!) so that I can see on an evening! I have used it already when I couldnt get there til late and it ROCKS!!! Got it from Amazon if anyone is interested ;)
One thing I will miss is making the snuggly beds (like you say) but I guess I can still put a stack of straw down in the shelter for them should they wish to bed down in there!
From a none horsey point of view everyone is wearing 10 layers of clothing everywhere you go so I dont get jealous of people in their skimpy summer clothes :p

I cannot wait for winter :D :D :D
I've just gotten a lovely new coat for riding in, so I cant wait to go up to help at the RS with a warm jacket and fleece and a scarf :o
I love being all wrapped up and also the fact I'll get to ride in the dark again as I have an evening lesson :D I just love it! Oh & xmas is so much fun as you get to dress the horses up in tinsel & put it on your hat and play lots of games, like the one where they put out a row of polyblocks as a jump which gets less wide each time (cant remember the name :o until you jump just one block on its own...
So yeah, looking forward to it :o
