I always wanted a rocking horse when I was younger.

I had to make do with the real kind though ;)

Well, I've had both... I used to restore and also make them from scratch. Sadly my new house doesn't have a workshop so I've stopped for a bit. Restoring them is incredibly satisfying, carving new ears and mending broken legs, amazing how tough the old ones were considering the abuse they got!

I have one called Cobweb, :) he's black with a white mane and tail - he lives at my dad's house in England. He's a youngster - I got him in 1978 I think... I was about 4! I still sit on Cobweb when I go and see dad.

I bought a trashed 1950s rocking horse from a car boot to restore - I spent AGES making the tack - it has the most amazing bridle... The idea was to sell him....But I couldn't bring myself to!:o

Cobweb has a companion pony! ;)

I have one, i found it in bits down the back alley near my parents, it took 2 days to find the head
I've tried to restore it, but it's not a proper job.

i have no idea if mines a recognised make....it's pretty similar to Wallys, i'd be chuffed to little mint balls if mine was a "named" horse.
If it was i'd save up for a proffesional restoration job on it :D

Sadly no, the Shetland who donated the mane and tail was an old dear mare who, when she was PTS, I tanned the hair to use on the horse.

i think thats a lovely thing to do, make sure you leave a note and a photo of said mare with the rocking horse (under the saddle or something)

I am going to get a brass plate made up, "In memory of Viola" and screw it to the bottom of the stand

Ahhh. That's SO sweet. What a lovely thing to remind you of her. I think that's lovely. :) You've done a lovely job of it.

One question....

HOWEVER do you find time to do everything...Or is it like a different 'time zone' in Shetland where there are doube the amount of hours in a day!:p

(BTW...The view out of your window in the corner of the photo...LOVELY!) :)

I went to Harrods last month on a visit to London. I saw these bad boys and sprinted across the shop to see them!

They were beautiful! They even had velvet rugs to wear!

They had a nice pricetag to match though

No I was deprived, I didn't have a rocking horse or my own pony :(:( The nearest I got was a hobby horse which wasn't quite the same thing! In the end I used my imagination and pretended I had my own pony, I used to groom it in my bedroom every night before I went to sleep :o

I had a rocking horse, but it was a *new* one - i.e. fluffy and furry rather than old and wooden! Like this one:

http://www.prezzybox.com/data/media/11952.jpg

I donated him (against my will really!) to my cousins 5 or so years ago as they had more need of him than I did.

I've always wanted an old wooden one though, and am determined to have one for my children (said children have not arrived yet and currently dont' have a suitable father to produce them!), need to start saving up or become very talented and restore one!

My grandparents used to have one that my Grandad restored, it was a dappled grey very much like the first pic, and as a horse-mad kid I used to love riding it. I believe it's with one of my Uncles now, I'd love to see it again. I really really want a rocking horse when I have a bigger house.

I have been toying with getting one of the pre-cut kits from the Rocking Horse Shop. You have the basic shape all cut out for you then you have to put the finishing carving to it and either leave it as the laminated wood or gesso and paint it....personally I LOVE gesso-ing

What do you do Wally, just glue it all together like those wooden planes people buy?

I bet it would make a lovely little project.

Wally
4th Sep 2009, 09:12 AM
You glue it all together, it has pegs and stuff so you get it straight, then you carve it and smooth it and finish it.

There are smaller projects to practice with, you can buy just the head to do, before you do a whole horse.

I had Morris my little rocking horse, he was bay and had wool like mane and tail, Me and my freind used to have rearing competitions on him in my attic bedroom and my stepdad used to shout up the stairs for us to keep the noise down!

Last year I rang my Mum to see if I could have Morris and put him in my front room for my cats to sit on! and she said ''Oh David took him to the dump last weekend!'':mad:

I was mortified and so so dissapointed in my parents for not realising their 24yo daughter still needed her Rocking horse :o

I feel so so guilty that he has been dumped after all those years of joy he gave me, all I wish is that some people have picked him up and took him home:cool:

Yes, I have two rocking horses, their names are Redrum and Fleetwind. They came from second hand shops - I "rescued" them! lol. Fleetwind sadly tho, is minus a proper mane and tail. I intend to "borrow" some of Storm's next time I do some trimming - and restore her! They both live in our bedroom. They are quite heavily rugged at the moment (tut tut)!!! (They are jolly useful for laying fleeces over etc instead of hanging garments up!!!!)

I will get pics of my rocking horse tonight, it's beautiful...

I wonder if anyone knows the maker, it's a scottish made one, carved entirely from wood, no mane/tail hair the curls of mane are carved from the wood too. It's absolutely stunning. My great aunt bought it before I was born, there aren't many in the world of that design and the royal family have one. She paid £3000 back in the 80's. I hate to think how much Treasure is worth now but it's a family heirloom and I willl never EVER sell my gorgeous pony (i mean rocking horse!!)

I have! :D

This is Rocky, made for me by my lovely grandad when I was a child :)
He even has his own rug, brushing boots, nosebag & numnah and a tail guard!
Me & my friends used to put on our hats, jods, body protectors & boots and spend hours "grooming" him and taking him for "hacks" :p

No joking. As a child I endlessly nagged my parents to buy me a proper rocking horse. Every single Xmas and Birthday it was all I wanted and I was always dissappointed. As I got older it became more of a jokey thing and continued for many years.

On my 34th Birthday I was given a little note from my parents, which told me I was to get my rocking horse but a living breathing one. I've had him 5 years now and we still call him the rocking horse. :D
