Well as some of you know I have a friesian mare who enjoys hacking, schooling, not showing or jumping (most definetly not jumping). Now I dont mind I love to hack etc and we are loooking into dressage as she enjoys schooling, but I have had some people on my back saying that it's a waste of a horse and she should be sold on to someone with showing intension

Should I force her do to something she hates because she is of the friesian breed and do what other friesians are "meant to do"? I'd hate to put her through something she doesn't like and will resent forever, I'm happy hacking her and schooling and possibly dressage infact I love it, just some people make you think if you are doing right by the horse :(

Why can't they see she is happy doing it? Why do they make me feel bad for having her?

:o:o:o

there isn't many classes for friesians anyways, i suspect eg they're not cobs, they're not hunters, no m&m ... dressage sounds like a nice idea. other than that ... it's your horse, you both enjoy hacking, so go for it and hack :)

God, some people are so interferring and think they know it all. You do what you want hun. Look at all the horses left in fields that don't do anything...now thats a waste.

oh sod them lol! they're prob jealous! who cares what they think - she's your horse and you do exactly what you want with her - sounds like she's far happier with you than some producer anyway :D and all this stuff about you should work your horse to it's potential = absolute piffle!! a horse dosen't care at all! in fact most horses would far rather be pigging out on grass and having the odd feed and groom than anything else! no horse is wasted if it's loved!
(can you tell you've hit a nerve there lol)

Well you're doing one better than me - all me and Dandea do is hack out and she does the odd appearance at the gradings :D

Friesians are not actually 'show' horses - the original purpose of the breed is a driving horse and they are still driven to very high competetive standards - you might want to point that out to the busybodies, also just exactly what classes would you show a friesian in????

I love hacking out and we don't even do much arena schooling, at the end of the day she is yours and the main thing is that you are both enjoying yourselves and happy - sod what anyone else thinks! Just jealously probably:)

if you and your horse are happy hacking then keep doing it. no point in doing something neither of you enjoy!

anyway they'd complain if you did showing on her because you would always beat them so in this instance i'd say it's a no win situation, whatever you do they will complain so sod them all! ;)

I agree! Take no notice.

I have been told two my horses are past showing as they are veterans but it don't mean I will listen, as long as we both enjoying we will do what we want! stick your middle finger up to them all and carry on doing what you want to do.

She's your horse--- so your rules apply-- easy as.

It's nobody else's business, you are not neglecting her so tell them politely to butt out!

Have many happy years hacking and dressage, as long as you love her, then it's what you do that matters.

Cheers, Midori

I agree, horses dont care what they do, although I think they do like a little interest in their lives. I'm dammed sure they dont count the rossettes on their doors they way some of these sad people seem to.

Take no notice and enjoy your horse :D

just because she is a beautiful fresian does not mean that you must show her to the world in a place that she is not comfortable in. keep on trucking in what you are doing and enjoy yourself

If a horse is loved, no matter what it does or doesn't do, it is not a waste of the horse. You carry on doing what you both enjoy, and ignore these other people.

i have had people saying similar to me. not specifically about showing, though some people have 'suggested' i should. i have no interest in anything competitive, apart from maybe some Trec or short endurance or something like that. especially as mine is so young they think i've bought him that age so i can mould him into the discipline i want. well i dont. my 'discipline' is Parelli NH. what a waste of a friesian THAT is!!! ;)

just 2 weeks ago, a 12 yr old girl said what am i going to be doing with him in the future - dressage? i said no, nothing special, in terms of riding then fun rides or le trec are my ultimate ambition. she scoffed, & said in a very sneering manner ''what did you buy a friesian for then?''. i said simply because i wanted one.

people seem to think they are for driving and dressage & thats it. well however deliciously gorgeous he is, he's still 'just' a horse. MY horse to do with as i please! if i were to win the lottery, sometimes i think i would buy a £100k SJ horse, just to hack about the streets on. just because i enjoy going against the grain, & making a point that i can do what i want.

Its in no way a "waste" of a horse! She's yours and you are both happy. Other people should really keep those kinds of opinions to themselves. I adore Friesians and was very disappointed at the Trailblazers Finals last year - a stunning example of the breed was shown in various classes and finished bottom of the line up every time. The horse and handler were immaculately turned out and the horse behaved IMPECCABLY! Most people just felt the Friesian didn't belong  They are a misunderstood breed by the majority and that proved it to me. My father was appalled when I said I wanted a Friesian - he spent most of the second world war in Holland and that area and at that time they were purely draft horses, when I saw them for myself in Holland when I was about 11 they were being used to launch lifeboats -now that was impressive! He couldn't understand why someone who had always enjoyed slighty nutty ponies would want something like that.

Why push a horse (or rider for that matter) into being something they just don't want to be.

Sorry if I have ranted a bit - but people like that really get my back up! Enjoy your lovely horse and when people tell you how beautiful and talented your horse is just smile and say thanks! Some people really are just a*ses!
