Im after a new digital camera that can take action shots and take the pic when you press the button and not have a few second delay.

I also would like one with a camera battery that just pugs in and charges as normal re chargeable batterys just dont seem to last very long.

Can anyone recommend a good, fairy low in price digital camera please?

No recommendations as i use my phone and it has about a 1 minute delay when taking photos so i usually just get the horses bum lol.

I'm saving up my boots points to get a new digital camera though so will be interested to see peoples opinions!!! (i know a few people who swear by the SLR type cameras possibly Nikon but they are far to expensive for me! but do produce really good action shots)

I have this camera (http://www.amazon.co.uk/FinePix-S7000-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B0000C6LQN). Not quite what you are looking for (can't plug in and charge) but can take some good outdoor action photo's without much delay. You just need to focus it on the jump and snap when the horse takes off.

Some pics I took at the GYS

For no delay, a SLR is your only real option - they're amazing, but very pricy and a bit to technical for your average person who just wants to take a few shots. If you can afford it, I'd go SLR all the way.

I have a bridge camera. It's not a normal, slimline camera, nor is it a super flashy SLR. Hence, they 'bridge' the gap between the two.

I absolutely love it. 10mp, 12x zoom and takes beautiful photos. Shutter speed is very fast but I'm a numpty and can't work out how to change it :o There is a basic 'fast speed shooting' mode that reduces quality, but it can be done at 10mp but adjusting shutter speed/aperture accordingly.

It's a Fuji Finepix S1500. Not as chunky as they look, really, it fits nicely into the palm of my hand. I don't really have any good action shots right now (read above!) but here is an example of the type of picture. This was taken on a basic point and shoot automatic mode and I truly am a TERRIBLE photographer. Clava will vouch for that! :p

The battery life on it is great, I spend ages faffing about and still takes around 350 per set of batteries. Better if you can get NiMH batteries, they're rechargable too. It cost me around 150 brand new with a memory card.

If you're after something slimmer, a Nikon Coolpix, or the slim Fuji Finepix cameras are always a good choice. They come in loads of colours and are under a hundred.

The Z30's are 10mp.

Hi,

I have the Kodak easyshare V1233 (about £100 and something). I like this becuase of the following;

*You don't have to buy batteries, which are pretty pricey as you need reallys strong ones for digital camera's. It's chargeable.
* I have left it overnight in the snow and rain and it still works (well... see my not so good things)

*You can take video on it too, which is great and the quality is second to none. Literally as if you have a camcorder. The good thing about this is you can take a picture from the video footage. So if you want a good pic for eg, whereby you are sitting on the rising trot and not rising you can take the pic from the moving vid.
* Battery lasts for ages
8 The zoom is great and again for a cheapish camera, it's pretty good.
* Pics are really good quality. Love it.

The not so good things -

*Well only one. Whilst I am extremely forgetfull and pretty dozy, I have left this camera outside in the rain, and a whole night in the snow. And it still worked. However now it doesn't work (well it does but the screen is blank) I have googled it and i think it's more to do with the camera, so I would get insurance, as the first camera I had did this after one week. So i took it back and got a replacement.

Goodluck.

We got a new one... well my dad did... for our safari this summer... Its a Canon powershot SX10... I love it... I actually might save up for one and get it. Again its a bridge camera... and from sort of being able to "see" what would make a good picture, I took stuff like these... (I hadnt used it before these!!!)

It is really good for zoom - once we had taken a picture we could see stuff when zoomed in what you couldnt see with binoculors!

I LOVE my fujifilm finepix s5700 (but if you went for this, go for the updated version as mine is a few years old now :p). It's a great little camera and I would reccomend it to anyone who wants something a bit more than your average camera, but cant afford a proper slr (like me :o).

They are fantastic for a bridge BUT a camera is just a tool and only a decent photographer can take decent photos, regardless of equipment ;)

I would say save up for an SLR if you are serious, you cant get better i dont think. The quick shutter speed and quality of pictures speaks for itself

I completly agree - I would love the skills and knowledge (and bank account) for an SLR and all the lenses. They are by far the best, although I am also very partial to a traditional film SLR... But then I have a bit of a love of film photos:o Its not the qaulity of image... they just have something about them!

I am probably going to save up for the SX10 my dad has (they live in London... not Manchester). Although I may be having a photoshoot with me and pony and an SLR (and lots of lenses flashed and all sorts!!!) next week - excited! Got to think about nice photos! Although I like the idea of a black beauty music'd racing around video haha... but bareback, think i'll be on the floor!! :p

untill recently I had a normal small, digital camera-a fujifilm 8.2 mega pixels-3 x optical soom which is tbh, very good but im doing photography at art college now so needed to step up a grade or 2 and got a SLR Nikon 10 mega pixels and 15 x optical zoom-its amazing im in love:D
its small and compact and very easy to use, uses AA batteries and just plug into pc to upload pics.I havent tried it properly yet with movement but did get these of indy using his lick- i got millions of every stage of his tongue going out!!:p
it has a botton where you literaly holdit down and follow the movin object and it takes LOADS of photos every second n then you can pick out the best.

Hi, I would agree with many people and say an SLR is the way forward for your action shots. I have used Nikon SLR's for ages, I started out with Nikon D40 which I bought from Costco for £500 with 2 autofocus lenses, now have a Nikon D80 with 10.1mp.......and OMG its amazing, infact a bit too good for what I use it for but I rarely miss a moving shot.

I have previously owned a Sony DSCW7 and 2 Fuji's (Not SLR) but all ok for general pics.

It really depends whether you want something you can just pull out ya pocket or something hanging off ya neck and how much money you want to spend or Invest.

This is the only reason I suggested mine as you asked for a cheaper camera. If you are willing to spend £500+ then I would by all means reccomend a slr, but I figured from this bit you didn't want to spend lots? hence my suggestion of the bridge camera, as these are around £200 ;)

I have digital SLR's

I have the Nikon D 80 which is a fantastic budget SLR, very easy to use and the pic quality is really good.

Also have the Nikon D300 which is a bit of a serious piece of kit price wise, but if your someone who enjoys pic taking and want to invest in a piece of kit that will see you through the years, i can highly recommend it.

Not a good photographer my AR$E! That picture of bailey is beyond beautiful, the compostition, the atmosphere, I've been staring at it for aaaages! Is he an oriental? Looks a bit like my old cat :D

Personally wouldn't reccomend an SLR for somebody who wants to take a few snaps, only because they are very bulky, they are very heavy to carry round if you have extra lenses etc, I'm always worried about mine getting bashed around the horses (like the time jim picked up my open camera bag and flung it across the yard, camera and lenses included :o, he nearly went to the glue factory that day!)

Some of the pictures on this thread from smaller cameras are beautiful quality, there is such a thing as too many buttons and an SLR can be confusing, and if you are likely to just set it to auto its not really worth the extra expense.

Getting those action shots is a craft in itself. Many moons ago I spent a fortune on all singing all dancing cameras and lenses but all the most memorable piccies I have got were taken with small, low cost, 35mm compacts.

The advantage of the little digital I use now is that I can keep it with me at all times. The best photo opportunities come unexpected and I am always ready. With modern cameras you can snap away hundreds of times and you are not constrained by the two or three dozen frames on a roll of film.

Expensive cameras will not make a good photographer, that come from having a good eye for an interesting picture and no little luck.

Regards the battery life, the camera I use takes two AA sized batteries. I use the highest capacity batteries I can find, currently 2500 mah. and they cost about ten quid for a pack of four. Using a good quality charger and cycling them properly (keeping them in their pairs and fully discharging them regularly) they will perform really well and have a long service life.
