Hi guys,
wanted a winge basically, im lay in bed and cant move WHAT SO EVER! i suffer from sciatica which ive had since 2004 after a car accident, i basically need an operation called a mini discectomy. anyways... i control the pain with codiene ( not good i know) but its prescribed by the doctor. i have months where im fine and months like NOW, when im not so fine :(
I didnt think about my back problem to be honest when i bought my horse and now im worried sick... just hopin a day a two in bed resting will sort my back and ill be back to normal. Left my partner in charge and i feel terrible for doing so because he hasnt the slightest idea *** to do! Ive written down how much feed etc and how to mix it in and all the rest of it... I DREAD to think what the stable is like and the hay nets etc... I really cant move the pain is that bad! Ive got 4 pillows propped under my knees so i can have the laptop on in bed... im so depressed i hate this!
anybody know of any horse sitters? i know it sounds mad but i really dont know what im gonna do, as my partner will have to go back to his own house in a day or two for work etc.

Oh hun, take it easy!
Can you send her to full livery for a short period of time? It may be expensive but you don't want to be doing any further damage. Or even a loan agreement :)v Get well soon!

Dont know of any sitters i'm afraid but i do know about back trouble. Badger you doctor to get the op done ASAP...If you need it then it should be done if not it will get worse. I have had a dicsectomy (the major version of yours) but thankfully i was under private medical care, and then i have just had my spine fused (feb this year) cos of the damage to the discs... Rest and i mean rest no twisting bending leaning etc and get nagging your GP.
Good luck finding a sitter, they are about somewhere. or maybe consider a short term loaner with conditions to stable at home where she is

can you get anyone to check the local tack shop, or ring them up and ask if there are any adverts or if they can recommend anyone.
I can sympathise as with my neck I cannot do my 3 for 6 weeks at all (thank goodness its summer)
Fingers crossed you will feel better soon

maybe ring a local vet as well, our small animal practice always has loads of notices up about pet sitting, I know they generally cover cats, dogs and other small animals but it might be worth a try in case one of them has horse experience too.
I had sciatica pretty badly last month and spent a day in bed and then tried to get on with it as much as possible, I did cry in pain after empyting the wheelbarrow though! As I'm sure you know, you'll be best off totally resting for a day or two so it can get better rather than moving around and making it worse.
p.s. If you're worried about haynets falling down if they're not hung properly, why not just tell your partner to put the hay in loose for a couple of days?! It wont do any harm for a short while!

Sorry your feeling bad, hope you feel better soon.
What you really need is some local horsey friends. Even local teenagers who like horses, some kind of back up.

By the way it would not kill her to go out 24/7 for a few days. That would at least save the mucking out.

I do know of a sitter, she does it for a living. I don't know how far she would travel or what the charges are but she has a web site. See if i can find it for you.
Sciatica is very painful. Wish you all the best. :)

HOpe you're feeling better soon. Alll good advice on here, I had a worry about what I'd do with our pair if either my OH or myself couldn't do them through illness (he was very ill last year and it was a struggle but anyways). I'd definitely give your vet a ring and see if they can recommend anybody - they may well know of somebody who is ideal to step in and look after your horse. Also, echo the advice of asking at local tack shops - also, might it be worth ringing your nearest yard and asking if they have any staff that the "rent" out to help in situations where owners are on holiday etc?
Worth a try!
And definitely if you are worried about haynets just ask your partner to put the hay loose on the floor - I stipulated that when mum in law was looking after ours for the day - it just made more sense than worrying about whether or not the nets were tied up right!
Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

Aww huni! Put Daph out for a few days and if someone can and chuck her a bit of hay on the floor and a bucket it in she will be fine. Big hugs hun and hope you are sorted soon xx

Can she live out for a few days? The worst of the weather seems to be passing, as long as she has a rug on if she needs it, hay and feed to keep her warm, she will be fine. Or is there anyone else you know near at hand who could nip in past to do her morning and evening?
I really feel for you, I suffer back pain myself and at times picking a few poos in the field is excruciating. Hope the pain eases soon :)

Where abouts are you? Someone on here may be able to help.

where abouts are you ?
as the others have said, maybe turn her out for a few days , a bit of hay morning and night, and maybe if she needsa feed try sticking to basic feed that any numpty cant go wrong with :D
theres also animal aunts, they do a pet sitting service all over the country, its usually for people who go away on holiday, but im sure given the reason you need help they would try and accomadate you ,
also get a doctor out, there is better pain killers than codine out there :)

Chuck her out in the field. She will be fine and just check on her through the window or get someone to check on her like a neighbour or friend. I am assuming it's still the same situation as I have read about before whereby she is by herself, so there will be plenty of grass out for her.
Don't keep her stabled 24/7 a) It's not good at all for her and b) It will be much more hard work for someone else which is all unnecessary.
Goodluck. Sorry to hear about your backache. Have never personally suffered with it, but I know people who have and they have said it was hell.x

This is why I keep my lad at livery! My sciatica started up today, thankfully it's only making my leg numb and there's no pain, but it meant I had to cut short my riding session ...
hope you're feeling better soon JR!!

I cant sympathise to the full extent but i know what its like having the worry of not being able to see to your own horse. I have sprained my ankles and been on crutches on several occasions  not quite the same i know!
I also would be willing to help you out if your not miles and miles away? - where are you??

OOOOHHHHHH I FEEL YOUR PAIN.........
I take codeine as well, trouble is if you take enough to kill the pain you
are not capable of doing much else anyway:D
I have a neck injury, sometimes like yourself its OK and you manage on
a day to day basis then something happens and WHAM.
Can you not turn the Horses out....its not that cold as yet, at least it
would save on the mucking out of the stables, which is why I moved to
my little yard so that I could winter mine out and therefore save my 'neck'.
I also, cos I take painkillers most days, spoke with the Doctor and changed
my meds to a drug called Gabapentin, thereby reducing the amount of codeine I take. TBH it has been a 'miracle' drug for me an absolute 'god send'. Pester your Doctor, push for the op (I only wish I had that option, mine is deemed 'too risky') tell him its interfering with your 'quality of life'
which it is.
Hope you make a quick recovery this time, you will just have to 'take it
easy' you have no other option.

Chuck her out until you're well enough again. The weather is supposed to be picking up again as of tomorrow (is here anyway!:p) It hasn't turned too much - I'm sure she'd be happy as larry anyway. If needs be get your OH to chuck some hay over the fence for her.
Hope you're up and about soon :) x

Thanks everyone for your well wishes. Been up most of the night but couldnt even bring myself to have a natter on here even
i would turn her out but the weather is rotten, it hasnt stopped raining here, it would be as bad if id got that field shelter up ...but i havent as yet.
My mum reckons i should find her a new home. and cant understand whty id keep onto her why my back is playing up. I do see what shes saying but how do you know your horse is going to be ok if you find her a new home? its tormenting me so much :( if i knew she was going to a GOOD home id be half tempted to let her go... for her own good . not mine. id be really sad to see her go. but me knowing how my back is... it may not be getting better anytime soon. cant really afford to put her on a full livery atm, or get the help id need at home to care for her.
its looking more likely that i will have to find her a new home, as im very sharp with my decisions, and dont hang around if i can help it.
So im gonna ask NOW if anybody is interested in this horse, but she MUST be going to a good home. im so bloody doped up this morning on codene i cant think str8 let alone care for her. its all geting a bit too much really. so if anybody is interested on can give her a good home please pvt me here to discuss, I wont be letting her go for free obviously..... But a GOOD home is alot more important to me over money. Jordan

Jordan - I'm so sorry to read this and also about your back problems, it sounds an absolute nightmare.
I'm going to suggest that at the moment, you think about putting her on full loan. This is for a couple of reasons:-
- you may find that within a few months, or after having your op that your back drastically improves and will want her back;
- the market is absolutely saturated with horses for sale at the moment - no-one has any money and good horses are being sold for peanuts. Plus which, winter is coming - never a good time to sell a horse!
I know things are crap for you at the moment, but please try not to make any "knee-jerk" decisions about Daphi - it is clear that you love her deeply.
Hope things improve for you quickly and that you start to feel better.
Take care,
R

Your right pale moon but even if i got my back operated on say Monday... id still need a few months to get mobile properly again. I have thought about all of this, I dont want to but in my own mind id feel alot better if she was gone. at a proper yard with other horses, knowing she was being cared for properly i cant look after her not whilst im like this. I dont want to loan her. that would be like torture! half owning a horse and half not. id rather not have one at all. I hope that makes sence? this poor horse wont know weather shes coming or going! I feel so sorry for her. she is used to me going feeding her now and our routine atm is so messed up. I feel a million times worse than my back feels.... knowing shes probably wondering whats going on. I dont want all this heartache, the truth of it is ...i cant cope with this heartache its driving me crazy not being able to move around properly... what chances do i have of looking after her like this? non!
I understand you guys giving me different options but to me..i dont have any. Im going to sell her shes a good horse, very pretty and very good. Im sure somebody will want to give her a good home... ecen if i oly ask 500 pound for her, id obviously let all her tack and rugs etc go with her. but how do i make sure shes going to a good home for sure? i want to avoid dealers and such like... I know it seems like a crazy decison but in my mind... id FEEL happier knowing she was being looked ater properly. that way i can concentrate on getting better.
sounds really shallow doesnt it? I cant help it, its just the way i am... im brutally honest. i always said... if my dog got hurt or even a family member say if we was in the wilderness or something and i knew they was suffering badly id be the sort of person to END IT for them. this is kinda like that... if you get what i mean.
I want this girl looked after properly that is my main priority atm.

Its okay nina, i,ll be fine. i just wanna make sure if i do get her a new home shes well looked after thats all.
Ive got a girl who MIGHT be coming tomrrow as she is interested in a horse for her OH who is also keen on riding. she has a horse herself and shes a member on here too! we,ll just have to wait and see.
Ive ben alone most of today and night as my partner had to go home to the lakes to do some work tomrrow at home.
daphi is still out as we speak 23.36pm and im going to go and attempt to bring her in. shes been fed and has water but id still like to bring her in if i can manage it as she hasnt ever stayed out bfore by herself she has been out this late before though so its ok. But think its time to bring her in now.

Jordan - only just seen your posts! Not been able to get on here for few days due to work - anyway, don't do anything rash!!!! Get help from those that will help. MY OH had his back op and he was not too long before he was up and about and having Daphi will give you an incentive to get back on your feet. There must be people on here willing to help - I know if i still lived near you I would have helped and when you are on your feet you can supervise and make sure she is getting looked after. My OH is great now and even rides one of our ponies _ something he never used to do! We have read about you trials and tribulations with Daphi and how much you love her! I hope I'm not too late with this post - someone might take her home with them for a while and then let you have her back! Good luck, Hun. If you PM me exactly where you are I might know someone who could help you out for the time being. x

hi, i wasn't going to use NR anymore but i couldn't resist having a peek. so sorry to read about your problems, i've been watching your progress and i'm sorry your illness makes you feel you have to find daphi a new home. my mum had sciatica and i know how miserable she was until her operation.
I was just wondering if there was any news?
I would also add that it wouldn't be a great tragedy if she was out of work for a good few months (ie. if you'd be upto feeding/grooming/mucking out, you wouldn't have to ride). Many people give their horses 'seasons' off, like people who hunt often give their horse summer off. The horse won't mind if all her other needs are met (esp. a thoroughbred who won't need constant exercise to keep weight off).
Anyway, let us know how you get on.
