It was hilarious - anyone had seen me they would have thought I was stark raving mad but Im so proud of my boy and that dog got more than he bargained for today

We went for a hack today around our local country park, just me and my boy. My dad passed away last week so I was looking forward to some alone time on horseback and some peace and quiet. So we were walking along the pathway when I was aware of a noise behind my boy, I glance around and there was a rottweiler cross charging up behind me barking and growling and snapping at Arion's heels. I prepared myself for a spooking, or possible bolting episode as this has never happened to me before but he didnt bother his backside with the dog and just kept walking:eek: He did lift a leg and kick out at it twice but it more of a "you are annoying me now bugger off" kinda way and he wasnt worried in the slightest.

Anyway, once I realised he was calm, I started swinging my whip at the dog and screaming at it to go away, it would go back a few steps and then charge at him again barking and growling. When we got to a corner where we normally turn left for a canter, it ran on ahead of us and went to run back towards us so I asked Arion to canter on, which he did without hesitation and this resulted in the dog turning heel and running away and my boy just jumped into a flat out gallop and chased the dog the whole length of the pathway with me swinging my whip over my head and screaming at the dog to "**** off" and "how do you like being chased you mutt" o:o

Honestly, I think I just got some therapy at the expense of that dog, and when it vanished across the golf course, we came back to walk and I laughed my head off at how utterly ridiculous we must have looked. I didnt want to hurt the dog, but I didnt want my horse to get hurt either and I just flipped - probably the result of having had a really tough week.

That dog will hopefully think twice next time it wants to chase a horse though, and my dad would have got such a kick out of the image of me doing my cowboy act through the park:o My horse is truly amazing.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your dad.Sounds like you had a great therapy session. Glad to hear you all came out of it unscathed. It could have been a nasty accident. Some dog owners are just plain irresponsible.

So sorry to hear you have lost your Dad. I'm glad this little episode cheered you up. It is SO annoying when people can't control their dogs. Especially big ones like that.

Give your horsey an apple from me and tell him I said he's a good boy!;)

Sorry about your Dad, hope you are OK.

Your description is hilarious - what a star Arion is! Sounds like he aspires to be a hunt masters horse! Did the dog's owner see you? That might have given him food for thought!:D

Sorry about your dad - glad you got the therapy you needed :)

I had a similar situation once but in my case the owner wouldn't call the dog off - "don't worry he won't bite". Never mind that my horse was spinning and rearing! I kicked the horse on and chased the dog. The owner went mental! I called out "don't worry I won't hurt him - have a nice day". I chuckled all the way home :)

To be honest, if they heard me screaming at their dog they were probably hiding behind a bush somewhere in fear of their lives:o:D
