Thanks. Ceri said his mane was rubbish and thin and straggly-it was, but I spent ages growing and tending it! Just gotta square off his tail, wiat or my achilles to stop rupturing, then I can take him to a nice inhand show! (Or get Ceri to take him, cos she can run fast! I need to find a showground with a wall so I can stop him!)

I think he looks good both ways but his mane was quite thin wasn't it? If his mane was thick then it wouldn't be good, but I'd rather have a nice hogged cob, than a cob with a thin, straggly mane ;)

7th Sep 2009, 06:44 PM
Ooh, heavens, controversy! I wanna keep the forelock for the moment: he won't keep a flymask on and there are tons of flies currently-very humid today!
Toffee-when I do his legs, I go all the way! All over clip, usually or around the muscle at the top-the line follows the muscle if I'm just doing legs.
Just gonna go and plead with PL52 to stop flouncing!

Not a fan of hogging at all, love to see hairy cobs,as nature intended them to be,so not a thumbs up from me I'm afraid, but is your lad,and as long as you're happy that's all that matters:)
Did you do it for a reason,or just to match his legs?? (ok the matching his legs bit sounds weird, but you know what I mean:p)

7th Sep 2009, 06:46 PM
He didn't have enough mane to be a traditional, so good choice!
Even Lance, whose mane reaches the top of his shoulder, doesn't really have enough to be traditional, so when he's old enough he too shall be hogged! Might as well turn out to type!

i think he looks wonderful, and if i had a cob, that's what he'd be like (hogged, clipped, all feathers off, everything). He suits being hogged, too, it makes him look more muscular and workmanlike. I am afraid i am not a fan of flowing manes and tails and rippling feathers, its all too much like hard work!

Agree with that totally, forelocks serve a purpose (mind you so do manes I have to say),are doing totally the right thing keeping it CT,don't let anyone tell you different!!
Wouldn't be right to make a horse suffer just for cosmetic reasons.

He didn't have enough to be traditional-he's an inbetween cob, neither MW or HW and the mane and feathers were frankly pants-half what they should be. Poor boy, all nekkid! Will do ridden when there's someone there to take a pic-should have asked yesterday.

I prefer hairy but I think he looks better hogged. His mane was too straggly and the legs already clipped so he didnt match up. He looks nicer as a show cob type. :)
I would take the forelock off too though, unless you are leaving it to keep flies off.

Dunno-reckon there's a trend of following people-a mate hogged so everyone told me to and I'd be wanting to try for ages so got up the courage and did it! He's a cob so I think it suits him and I want to try every possible look so I can decide what I prefer on him. I think I like the look, especially after last winter's mudfest:

Thanks, I think so too! You can give your opinion all you like-it's a public forum and I posted pictures for a reaction as some of my friends on here are very divided about it. It's just the way things are put: I expect some people not to like what I've done but I think the way things are phrased can sometimes appear unfortunate. Likening my beloved horse to a cow was one of these instances. You are, however, entitled to say what you like. I am entitled not to appreciate it.

Hi, stunning either way *runs away from any confrontation and hides in the corner, rocking backwards and forwards*.
What happened re. his insurance and the mud fever?
Think I'll join you! As soon as I stabled him (he lived out all his life but my then yard didn't allow this), he got dreadful mudfever to the point I called the vet for that brilliant cream and antibiotic-it was really severe so it was excluded on his insurance-stupid really, as plenty of horses are prone but it's treatable and is tons better. As soon as I took off the feather and could get to it properly, it started to clear.
He looks great :D
Well the forelock will have to go as well :p

I was always a hairy fan, but have been getting itchy fingers recently about clipping the feathers off , and this will be happening.
His feathers aren't that thick either so I might get rid of them before Winter.
He already got a radical hair cut the other day as my cob's mane is like yours, quite straggly. It looks quite messy and ridiculous long, so I shortened it and it already looks loads tidier ! (This was done after that pics was taken)
Your horse you do as you please with regards to how he is clipped :) :)
Monty's helper, you can express your opinion, but the way it was worded was pretty tactless of course it was going to rouse a few comments. But then you knew that already didnt you ;)
Actually I just found a pic of my boy when he was clipped out fully by a previous owner, he looks like a different horse and I think it suits him.

Sigh. He won't keep any flymask on. I do keep saying this. Thanks for your charming opinion. It's forelock, BTW.

Heehee - good thing you didn't change your mind halfway through :D! I think he looks kind of cute with the forelock left on :o. I'd never be brave enough to clip everything off if I had a hairy :p!

I love a hogged cob, they remind me of a bloke who shaves ;)
Can't believe how some people can be so blunt and harsh in their response.
Sorry, but if anyone refered to my horse looking like a "cow", I think I'd have a bit more to say CT! x

You write that as though it's a well-known fact but how should I know about the dyslexia?
Tolerant? SUPER tolerant: I'm a teacher and have endless patience, hence I read all the replies on threads so as not to repeat others.
Re fly masks: I have tried a lot of varying types/makes, all of which end up on the ground, not him.

I did, but I did it privately because I think that person enjoys the controversy and being known as 'blunt'. I just find it offensive and uncouth, so I mostly ignored it.
Not that i know anything but i think he still looks good...and maybe it will grow back thicker?!
Thanks: I'm kind of hoping it will grow back looking better as I loved his mane. I do prefer traditional but it looked poor on him because of the lack of thickness.

Thanks, hun. I posted publicly and I expected perhaps a few replies, not 6 pages! Must be rubbish TV this week! There's no point in being annoyed: people can say what they like. Only the ones I rate can upset me!;) I'm a sad person-see my friends' list-very few given the time I've been on here!

I was joking on my first post btw - hence the dramatic *cry in corner* - just to make that clear!! ;) I would not have been so level-headed with some of the replies though so well done

oooh, eeek- 6pages cos cinnamontoast hogged her horsey!:D
i havent read through them all - but im guessing there are some strong opinions!
wellll - ok, im not a fan of hogging:o soz CM - BUT - he is your horsey and you love him and I think he is handsome whatever. At the end of the day it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks...
lol, i use the clippers on the underside of Blue's mane cos its sooo thick and he wont let me pull it:rolleyes: it helps it lie flat and looks smart... but when the wind flips it over , he looks 1/2 hogged, ha ha!
when i had a coloured cob, she was fully clipped, but with legs and feathers left on..... BUT-she had a short, neat pulled mane and forelock. So not really fitting in with any tradition, but i liked her that way:)

Cinnamon...why have you left the forelock on?????
JOKES! :D
I do think its fairly logical to read the posts before you reply...am I alone in this as most people just seem to have looked at the pics and clicked reply?
Anyways, If I had a cob it would be all off. As it is I trim my TB to within an inch of her life, poor soul.

I wish hogging was an option with my mare - her mane is okay but her forelock is the thinnest, most pathetic thing I've ever seen. But really, I think a hogged Arab would be the most ridiculous thing ever. I'm tempted though.
Your boy looks great CT, and entirely un-cowlike :D

I think he is lovely even though I am a hairy horsey person (as you will know by my Elton John suggestion ;)) and you have been very polite in the face of some rather OTT comments.
Also think you are brave too as one of my numerous reasons for liking manes is that they are something to hold on to in times of crisis :D

When/if you decide to grow it back, Megatek rebuilder really adds to the thickness. Daffy has a pathetic forelock, and it improved loads. :)
Might cost you a lot to do the entire mane though! :p
Being hogged does suit him, particularly if you'll never be able to grow his feathers back completely. IMO hogged cobs always look smarter than their hairy counterparts. Probably the sleekness of it all; stunning as they are, hairies (and I include my welsh D in that!) often look windswept as soon as they get out of the trailer. :D

I used to have a Glock (airsoft) but the OH sold it. Unimpressed.
