Few people come on NR just to be nasty & argumentative. I don't think a small payment will make any difference, personally; valued members seem to be leaving, but who knows, those less desired may still stay. Still, the decision's been made.

I had said i was going to stay in THE thread. but now i've lost my identity i dont think i will. if i have to start over, i may as well start over elsewhere. plus i have been very angry at the way this situation has been handled. as you can tell though, i'm still desperately clinging on with everything i've got till the very last minute! after spending several hours a day on here, for 2 yrs, even logging on whilst i was abroad on my honeymoon ;):D, i feel i deserve to squeeze whats left out of the final few weeks.

Joined HHO to see what its like but TBH i don't like the way its set out, not as user friendly as NR at all. And i don't like how if you hover over a post you can't see what its about without going into it completely! I'm just lazy in how i pick what i want to read i guess!!!

I've been a lurker for years!
I have not yet found any other forums like NR. It has a very unique atmosphere. I'm going to try my hardest to stay, and hope it doesn't change to much. (which I fear it might.)
I've actually learned SO much from NR it's incredible! One of my biggest dreams is to own a horse and post about it on New rider :o ridiculous I know!
Anyway I'm just going on, so heres my question. I am a Canadian citizen and I'm only 16 so cant get a pay pal account, how I'm I supposed to pay? Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to leave.:(

Some interesting points have been made, may I try and put some more. If you value and enjoy this forum then kook at it like this
1 What gives you a years enjoyment for £10
2 Less than half a takeaway meal
3 Not even a fraction of a night in the pub
4 Two packets of fags
5 One less treat for yourself ;)
6 INFORMATION from people who are more experienced
7 Good place to make new friends
Just a few that spring to mind, I have not been here that long but will be staying. If I win the lottery I will pay for you all :)

I won't be staying.
I've been on holiday so missed what has been going on here - but I don't think too many people will pay to use a forum and sadly that will affect the level of the discussions on here.
I also use HHO which I prefer anyway as I find I get better information and a greater variety of topics on there.
I've been on there for about 3 years now without any trouble - yes there can be a degree of bitching (or straight talking depending on how you look at it :p) but its a minority and quite easy to keep out of.
If you don't mention carrot sticks you'll be fine :p

I'm staying. Hoping to be more of a poster than a lurker on the new boards too :).
I've said right from the start that I've learnt way too much here to leave. Would love to know the stats in 6 months time of how many people say they're going elsewhere and then come back here - I reckon unless you're unhappy here anyway then there's just nothing that compares to nr in terms of tone, content, the number of responses to threads and importantly the sheer number and frequency of new posts.

I think quite a few 'old' knowledgeable members left a while back due to what they perceived as a change in the way they nr had headed (attitude of posters, atmosphere etc) - perhaps they'll return with Mike's new vision in mind? Just a thought :)

Me too Brandy.
I've had way more than a tenners worth of help from here so I'm in. I've made really good friends on here (online and IRL).
If it wasn't for here I suspect I would have given up riding when Arnie and I hit rock bottom confidence wise last year - instead, I was able to go to the beach on sunday in a crowd of 7 horses! And have a ball:D!
I still dont think its the right way forward because I know I wouldnt have paid a subscription when I first started using this forum (it was the first forum I ever joined and I didn't know what to expect about forums in general - I had just heard the horror stories about meeting weirdos over the internet!) and I suspect that a lot of potential new members will feel the same.
Even so, I am more than happy to pay for it now! Perhaps a couple of months free to let newbies get the hang of it would be an idea now?? Just to entice them online?
Anyway, whatever happens, I'll be here after the 1st of October:D

not that it would matter much if i stayed or go but i'm not going to stay, i don't see the point in paying to use a forum when there are plenty of others out there.

i have just had a look on the HHO forum and i think it is terrible how they are all clicky and abusive, i will be paying the 10pound or 15 euro to stay here rather than be abused on the other site, i have found NR extremely valuable for me and dealing with the different horses that i have ridden or dealt with and i would never leave

Lol at HHO being scary!
I think it all boils down to what you are used to.
I have been on HHO for nearly 3 years and New Rider for just a few months.
I think New Rider is quicker to load etc but i used to pm a friend on here a lot and now find myself limited to one pm every 10 mins. I will hugely miss the swap shop though.
HHO i find is a lot more competetive - you have top flight showjumpers and eventers going round Burghly so they have the experience to back their opinions which i have no problem with.
My posts get more reads over there too so to me HHO is more value to me..
Oh and it WAS ME that tried to welcome you all to HHO on that thread - i tried my best.
JOJOBA
17th Sep 2009, 09:28 AM
HHO isnt the only other option though ;). People seem to think its HHO or NR and thats it!
Im the member of 3 other horse forums which are all significantly more friendly than Newrider (not counting the fact that Im also a member of HHO and that place is a bit scary for us clicker training / NH people). Hence my decision to just swap to them rather than pay the membership here.

I think quite a few 'old' knowledgeable members left a while back due to what they perceived as a change in the way they nr had headed (attitude of posters, atmosphere etc) - perhaps they'll return with Mike's new vision in mind? Just a thought :)
Possibly :) But presumably they have discovered the many other friendlier forums around and add to their knowledge base instead of this forum's? I don't know, everyone is free to do as they wish and can join as many forums as they wish :) Though if we all charged £10 a year, people would be paying a lot out :p;)

I think that thread is quite funny :D
I'm fluffy. My horse is a pet who I bought because I fell for her. Oh and I bought a carrot stick and 12ft line I've never needed :o
I love horses, riding comes into that but isn't the be all and end all.
Riding and horses is a leisure time persuit and not a sport. I love thinking about horse physcology and how they behave with each other. I also love thinking about how I can best comunicate with them myself.
I'm not bothered about improving or competing. I can do what I want do do well enough to have fun and be safe. I'm not part of the horsey set as what precious little time I get up the yard is to be with the ponies. That's why I value the forum so much.
Having fun hacking out and having a blast across country is all I want to do as far as riding is concerned

I have to be honest, that thread is rather funny! :p:p:p If not a little offensive to those who use those methods!!
I love NH! More the Monty side than the parelli! I think NH gets given a bad name because of extremists who make us out to be "fluffy bunnies".
I think NH is actually the opposite! Groundwork teaches a horse manners but with a different approach.
Each to their own! :D

Those contradictions are what I like. That's what I like about NR too.
I don't the the thought of a forum where everyone sings from the same songsheet. I like contradiction and debate.
I don't like contradiction and abuse minus the dabate and there's no doubt about it that NR was going through another cycle of that - mind you it did coincide with the school hols which means it was all down to bored parents stuck at home with the kids!

£10 is a lot to me, it's a weeks worth of food, and I dont have a huge amount of money atm, so I'd prefer to keep what i do have rather than give it to someone else who I don't know, for no reason...
I don't really want to be on a subscription-only forum anyway, it will be cliquey and there will not be many fresh new members to make interesting threads.

Anyway, like another poster said, it's less per year than my current subscription to Horse&Rider and as i've recently become one of the statistics(unemployed) it's probably better for me to stay on NR and lose the magazine for the mo.
Will be really really sad to see some of the regulars go though, but i think (and hope ) that NR will still be a good accessible resource for novices like me.

Completely agree! Defeats the object and is very boring if everyone agree's and cant be honest.
TBH I have never come across much meaningful debate on any popular message board .... where they do start to happen they get drowned out by passers by throwing in one liners and then moving on. Inevitably they does end up in what we perceive to be a decline in standards and old hands here refer to the old days when things were better.
While I have seen mention of bullying I have not seen the bullying itself and suspect it was the activities of kids with nothing better to do in their spare time.
On the subject or to stay or not to stay I think I will be around because I beleive that the conditions that started to ruin this board will no longer be there. Unfortunately I think boards such as H&H, which are good sites, will end up taking on many of these problems. In the case of H&H they also have an excellent magazine to protect so it will be very interesting to see how they cope with it.
As for the subscription fee, it is less than 20p a week and I am mythed that horse owners say they cannot afford to pay this for a valuable source of information and advice.

I like HHO because of the wealth of knowledge and experience on there.
But I feel it sometimes moves too fast and some questions can get lost.
I also like HHO because of the non horsey section, so you can get to know the other posters.
I like this forum because it is fast enough to stay interesting but slow enough to keep up with. I hope it stays at the speed it's at when some people have left, hopefully some new people will join.
I would like some kind of cafe area here, so the people who haven't been here that long (me!) can get to know other posters.

But that wasn't what was said which is why I put the £2 a month reminder up. I was responding to the answer given for once rather than reading it completely wrong and responding to what I thought I'd read :o
There are many people who have only been saying they can't afford £10 and that's the reason they are going. This is why I'd like to remind everyone in that situation that there is the £2 a month option. Lurk for a couple of months on the areas of the board that you can get access to and then go for the £2 a month option if you like what you see ;)
I am amazed that after years and years of getting so much from this forum how little it has taken for some people's loyalty to be withdrawn and the bitterness and nastiness of some (ex)members to take hold.
I can't see people like these staying on in October (many have already left)which just goes to prove the original point made about trying to weed out some of undesireable aspects of the forum. I won't miss them at all.
Unfortunately there seem to be a hell of a lot of good, honest, lovely people leaving too, many of whom I have met and will continue to be friends with. I'm really going to miss so many people from here and have had to join another forum to keep in touch with them.
I hope that the people who displayed nastiness and game playing have friends and family around them who are a little more forgiving of them and their actions then they exhibited here. If not then I pity them. This lack of balance in their own lives might go a long way to explaining how such out of proportion extremist reactions came about. Whatever the excuse, the October subscription has done a fine job it getting rid of a number of them so bravo!!!!
Shame it was at the cost of so many other genuine people :(

Well I'm happy to pay £10 a year to carry on using NR, that works out at about 3 pence a day, if my calculations are right :D. I can't think of anything else that can provide such good entertainment at that price!!
Just had a look at HHO and the layout of it has given me a headache :o

heres a post by one NR/HHO member
i've been on NR a while - and on here a while too but suppose i'll be on here more now
and i'm afraid i use whips, spurs, demand things of my horse and blooming well make it work for all the ££'s i sink into her
admirable person:rolleyes:
That's the post that really p*ssed me off too! It's like people on that thread are trying to prove their 'proper horsiness' by bragging about how stupid NR is and how they use artificial aids and are proud etc, I think it's childish, closeminded, ignorant, and stupid  I don't think people over here view their horses as machines or investments, at least.

What can I say, I was young, I was desperate and I didn't know what I was doing :p
Oh and I am cheap too as my hubby can testify but I'm trying to keep that under wraps ;) :D

Jeez - some of us can actually use both forums you know?
There are bits on HHO i prefer and bits on here i like.
BUT having been a member of HHO for nearly 3 years, HHO would get my vote.
I wasnt aware i couldnt post on NR just because i prefer another forum?
Hmmm

Don't make me get my hideous carrot stick out to you too :p
Just because some others have had a sense of humour failure doesn't mean to have to follow suit ;)
Just pretend to be bunnylike and relax and smile before you go to sleep and dream of chocolate fountains.
Night night, sleep tight :)

I won't be staying - nothing to do with the money but more to do with the way things were handled and also because I don't feel the need to pay to be in a cliquey environment where, I believe, it will be even harder to have an opinion that is not the "herd" opinion.

I'm not sure yet, but I probably wont stay if I have to pay, and I've deleted my albums because I don't like the thought of them being here if I no longer have control over them. I think its a shame that its come to this. The Trolls and idiots don't bother me, afterall they can just be ignored and anyway in every discussion forum there are bound to be differences of opinion and squabbles resulting in people being labelled as trouble makers/Trolls (I haven't been by the way), and subscriptions probably won't change this. I think it will take a long time to build New Rider back up again and it might not be as good, as there obviously won't be as many people using it for a long time.

I now lurk on HHO, SA and COTH but I will not be on here once the payment is needed. There are other forums and although I wish NR all the best and hope it goes well for them I will not be around to see it.

I'm not sure yet, I've really enjoyed NR over the years and have made some great friends because of it, but I don't really want to pay to use it. Wouldn't mind paying for adverts though.

well, frankly, im a bit gutted
ive been offlne for a couple of weeks and come back to all this
no, i wont be staying, im still qite a newbie on here so although i like it here im not happy to pay a subscription to stay when there are plenty of free forums out there. my internet access is quite erratic and i dont see the point in paying a sub when its quite likely i wont be onlinme for months at a time anyway.
