...that had been "packed" by putting it in a bin liner and wrapping brown tape around it.
Not impressed.

A lot of saddles will be packed this way but also using bubble wrap.
did you as a buyer ask how it was going to be wrapped or did it say in the listing?

No, I didn't ask how it was going to be packed. I'd assumed that they would have taken a little more care with a fragile item...especially considering how much I paid for postage. Bubble wrap I would have been happy with.

i'd check if it's ok and then have a little word with them.
maybe mention it in the feedback or money off if been less than careful.
i always use lots of bubble wrap if i don't have a box. never a bin liner as they tear unless it's heavy duty and normally handle with care labels etc, cos the buyer IS paying me to be careful

I'd contact the seller to say it had arrived but due to the inadequate packaging you'll have to have it check out by a saddler and will leave appropriate feedback after that :)

I have sold 2 saddles on ebay, each in a cardboard box lovingly stuffed with newspaper!
I would never send a saddle in a bin liner!

I reckon that if it is undamaged you don't really have anything to complain about. I agree it is a bit shocking but if it had been damaged you could have returned it for a full refund with your paypal buyer protection so the seller is the one who would have lost out. As it is, I would leave positive feedback and mark down their DSR stars for the P&P. :)

Unfortunately while I was giving it a good clean this morning I discovered 3 fairly deep scrape marks on the leather :(. Don't think I'll be able to clean them out. I messaged the seller earlier today to let him know, said that they wasn't mentioned in the item listing and asking whether it happened during transport. He replied saying that it probably did happen during transport, but that it was insured with Parcelforce so I need to get in contact with them.
So...I messaged back asking for the order number but also pointing out that I don't reckon Parcelforce will pay out if an item's inappropriately packed. Ebay gurus, where do I stand? If Parcelforce say no, can I 'report a problem' on ebay despite having given feedback (which was positive but did mention poor packaging)?

It is up to the seller to deal with Parcel farce as she is the one with the contract with them.
I would photograph the scratches and start a significantly not as described dispute through ebay and Paypal.
If you like PM me the item number and I'll have a look at sellers rep.
PS never leave feedback before sorting everything out.

Grr how awful...I would harass the seller, and I have gone down the ebay reporting a problem route having given positive feedback, and it did work (got refund and to keep wrong rug that had been sent). Have you checked ebays page on responsibility of seller for packacging? sure they will have one (off to work so no time to look, sorry).
P.S...why are you buying a new saddle? Does that mean I can steal yours please?;)

Open a dispute immediately, if you've given positive feedback Paypal will reclaim the money from the seller if you open a dispute within 21 days (think it's 21) from the date of dispatch. Receipt of positive feedback is what releases the money you've paid to the seller.
I've just sold a saddle on ebay, my 2nd in fact. First was leather, second was synthetic. Both got sent in the right size boxes and were wrapped in bubble wrap in the box. Both arrived safely, undamaged. It's not difficult.

I've opened a dispute and requested a refund that I think compensates for the loss of value of the saddle. I feel really mean :( the guy seemed nice.

It is up to the seller to deal with parcelforce and you do not have to wait for that to be completed before you have your dispute with the seller resolved.
Tbh there's no way on earth parcelforce are going to cover for damage on a package with insufficient packaging. That's the sellers problem, not yours.

I, as a saddler would NEVER post a saddle in anything other than a very robust box with lots of paper and bubble wrap.

I work for a delivery company (not parcel force), we wouldnt pay anything back out to you as it is the sender that has paid us. It is up to him to contact Parcelforce if he wants to claim through their insurance. I agree with other posters though that they probably wont pay out for the damage as the packaging was insufficient. The most they will do is refund his shipping charge.

Agree. Your seller is the one who is responsible for getting the item to you in good condition.
If you are using the significantly not as described dispute via paypal, be prepared for them to tell you to send it back to the seller (by means that is trackable online) at your own expense. You won't be refunded the return costs by paypal only the original purchase price + P&P. Doesn't seem fair to me at all but thats the way its done.

I too bought a saddle that was delivered in a bin bag. It was also described as being a 15", when in fact it was a 17" so fortunately for me, I was able to send it back (with much mud-slinging from seller and a paypal dispute).

Luckily the seller seems like a nice bloke. I *think* we've agreed on a partial refund to compensate for the loss of value. Not going to count my chickens until the money hits my paypal account...but I think I've been lucky - considering!
