View Full Version : Would anybody want him?

Many of you will know that I have slightly loopy horse! He is 9 and I've had him for just over a year.
He is very fearful and spooky/nappy when going out alone but is ok with others (although still silly sometimes). He needs loads and loads of time and work spent on him and I know it sounds like a cop out BUT I really don't feel I can commit the time he needs as I also work 4 days a week, have 2 kids, 2 dogs, husband, house etc etc.
Also I've had a problem with a disc in my neck pressing on a nerve, which has been really painful and everytime he leaps around it jerks it and I go back to square 1.
My problem is I love him to death and whilst I don't think he's the horse for me, or me for him at this particular time, do you think in the current climate (buyers market), I could find the right person to take him on? Also do you think I would be able to put a clause in somewhere that if they were going to sell him, I'd have to have first refusal? I really don't want someone to have him to sell him on. I'd love someone to have him and keep him forever. What are your views?
Thanks.:)

Cant you get a competant sharer?? or send him away for some more schooling? Would be horrible if you lost him, the loopy ones have the best characters deep down! Maybe sell the husband instead?!? :)

I agree, can you not find a sharer or someone to loan him?
I know plenty of people who are very confident and have dealt with this sort of behaviour a lot of times with various horses... so there ARE people out there :)
Maybe you could advertise about a sharer/loaner first? :)

Ha! I would if I thought he was worth anything (the husband)!!
Can't really afford to send him off for schooling, although sharer might be a good idea. I'm just a bit nervous at the moment I think because of my neck and he can do a very good rear/leap/plunge/buck routine!

I have advertised him for loan on here in the classifieds section but think I've been a bit too honest as no phone calls yet! I think that would be a good idea but my Husband seems to think I'll never stop wanting to interfere if he's still mine!

Have you tried project horses?

Sharer seems the best option, someone strong on the ground to do a bit of manner teaching. There are usually lots of people looking for shares on trade-it.
And the beauty of loaning is you get to interfere!!! but that could also be difficult to handle if he gets worse.
Have you identified the source of the loopyness?

Tbh in my experience it is hard enough to find loanees or sharers for a horse with no problems let alone one with issues to iron out. :(

No, I haven't. Who are they and what do they do?
Sammy, I think it's just his nature really. That and he wasn't backed til 6ish and then nothing was done with him til last year when I bought him, so he is like a 3 year old really, well worse than many 3 year olds I've known!

Project horses is a website where people advertise horses for sale/loan/share that have 'issues'. I know alot of people who've bought and loaned horses via the site and most have been extreamly happy with them.
One person's problem horse is another person's dream!! My lad would have driven alot of owners to distraction but to me it was a challenge (I'm a stubborn old mare!!) and I'd definately look for my next horse on project horses first. ;)

He's improved ALOT to handle on the ground with some firm but fair guidelines! He used to be a bit bargy but he's really good now and responsive when you want him to move, stand etc.
He was never shod before I had him, so is a bit difficult to shoe i.e. pulling feet away etc, but I usually just give him some ACP or something before farrier comes.
He has never done any jumping as such, but I have popped him over a couple of little logs and things out hacking and he seems to enjoy it! He would need starting from basics though to learn properly. In the 13 months I've had him, I've just been trying to get the groundwork, manners and trust sorted.

There are people around that will take horse like yours on, and help try and sort out there issues.
There is a lady at my yard who is fantastic, I am sure if you advertise, you will find someone.:)
