Following on from the 'How often have you moved yards' thread, I wondered *why* people move yards, what were your reasons for moving???
Just interested :)

Oh god, now your asking......
1. Better facilities
2. Better worming programme (some have none at all!!)
3. Too much road work (very fast and busy roads - had bad accident)
4. Think the grass is greener and not always
5. Some people not very nice
...... the list continues. So glad I managed to settle for past 12 years!

I actually left facilities behind to be on a yard where the hacking is better and the people are more friendly. :)

I've been on my yard for nine years.
The only way that I would leave is if I got booted off (and I make sure that I would never do anything to GET booted off!!!:D)
Its fantastic.

I moved from my first yard, which was fantastic, primarily because I couldn't afford the ffes anymore. We also had alot of showjumpers moving in and with me on my little non-jumping girl, I was a little left-out.
The second yard was cheaper when I moved in, but they made loads of empty promises, Daisy was bullied, they upped the fees twice in 2 months (went from R1300 to R1500 then again up to R200 in 2 months) and I was told they were breaking down the cheaper wooden stables where Daisy was and she'd have to move into the darker hotter brick stables, which is why the price was jumping. This was almost 2 years ago and those stables are still standing, with horses in them. Also, the farriers would come at random times and we'd have to pay into their bank accounts at one day's notice (difficult to do with no transport to the bank and bank account for internet banking). A couple pieces of Daisy's tack went missing, there was almost no grazing and she would be vacced/dewormed without me knowing and suddenly I owe the vet money.
So I was very unhappy there. There were about 80 horses on that yard. So I began to look for new stabling and just at the right time, I found a new place for me to stay with paddocks, so Daisy came home. I miss my first yard, and if I had the money, Daisy would definitly be there were she not at home. I've yet to find such a well-run and friendly yard.

Yard 1. Initially kept Milo where his old owner had kept him (I'd part loaned him) it was only ever intended to be a summer arrangement.
Yard 2. Having been there 6 montsh was meant to be moving to new area with partner, he then left me but I had already arranged to move yards so had to find quick grazing.
Yard 3. Temporary grazing-see above.
Yard 4. Because I wasn't moving to new house had no where to live and had to move back to my parents. Tried to leave Milo where he was but survived a week for I decided I missed him too much.
Yard 5. While at temporary yard I bought a new pony who was kept in a field. Moved Milo in with her for a couple of weeks so they could used to each other before we moved to my new house.
Yard 6. First yard in Huddersfield. Found at the last minute, was a bit of a ramshackle affair (loopy barbed wire) and never felt settled there.
Yard 7. Turned out to be alot more horses grazing land than planned. Mine were bottom of the pecking order and others were getting fed in the VERY muddy field causing scraps.
Yard 8. We're here and we're settled, thanks muchly

Have only moved twice.
First time was because there was no winter turnout at all.
Second and last time was partly because we never felt truely settled, partly because turnout was limited throughout the year but mainly because it was too adult orientated and my daughter needed more people her age around her.
New yard is fantastic and we all love being there!!

Yard 1 - super (full livery) yard then yard changed hands and fees went up but quality of care went down so moved to.....
Yard 2 - over the road from our rented house. Started as full livery then changed to DIY livery. Initially excellent setup but turned out it was run by people who thought they knew more than they did. Quality of grazing/stabling/other facilities went gradually and then rapidly downhill so moved again to ....
Yard 3 - excellent yard. Expensive but worth every penny. Would still be there but have finally been lucky enough to buy a house with land and so moved the horses...
...home!:D

i used to wonder the same - why on earth do people move about so much? but now being the hoss owner (for 6 months), a seemingly perfect yard turns into not-so-perfect after all quite quickly. dont get me wrong, i still like mine, & its too convenient for me to go anywhere, but there are things that would make me consider elsewhere, if i was more flexible, & there was more choice around here.
1. turnout. the turnout sounded great when i first got there. 24/7 in summer, 1/2 out 1/2 in, in winter. suits me. but there are 15 horses on the yard. 3 are mares, the rest geldings. all the geldings are crammed into one field (not nearly enough acres per horse) & 'all' the mares have lots of grass & arent all standing around at the gate starving day & night.
2. YO is responsible for maintenance/upkeep etc. she's supposed to poo pick/clean troughs etc. this never gets done. last time they got done was by 'Clippi' & another livery's dad, because it was so minging the horses wouldnt drink. then my horse got caught with tape around his legs that was supposed to be electrified - it wasnt - but i got charged because he was supposedly the one who tore it down, even though i could have been charging her for vets fees for unsafe fencing. other fencing that leads directly onto main roads is also very shoddy. one horse got out (stepped over) one time, & wondered himself back up the main road to the yard.
3. other liveries. i get on with everyone at my yard, they are so lovely & helpful, full of advice, but not interfering. except one. OMG. she is not mean, she's not nasty. but bloody hell, i feel sick when i get to the yard & see her car.
4. Yo twists words & makes out you've done something crazy that you havent.
5. when you go to yard, you think it saves you a lot of hassle that you have to buy hay & bedding from YO. then you realise how much she charges for the privilage, & wish to god you could go out & get your own.
6. facilities. lighting is pretty poor, meaning you have to squint in the dark & bring additional torches. i know its lucky to have lights at all, but if you have them, they might as well be half decent!
7. hacking. you think when you get there that the hacking isnt great, but you'll make do. then you realise that the road the yard is on, is actually a lot more dangerous than you thought, & the big farm track bridleways arent as long as you thought.
thats just some reasons ;):D
they all sound petty, but put them altogether, day after day, & they do start to grate.

- Want a school
- Want a sort of option for part/full livery as will be working shifts so not always possible to get there twice a day
- Wanted less barbed wire to shred her sweet itch hoodies on
Things that make me not want to go
- A fair bit further to drive - not on the way to anywhere
- Not 24/7 turnout lilke we have (although badly managed atm)
- Miss the people currently see
- Its scary to make a big decision hahaha

I haven't even got a horse let alone moving yards lol, but I do know that if it were possible to, I'd much rather have a house of my own with enough land for stable, Tack room, paddock and/or outdoor arena, although I'd probably need to win the lottery 1st :p
That way the horse(s) can be fed and turned out in a routine that both owner and the horse(s) can be happy with :)

I've moved because of various reasons in the past year. First move was because I couldn't be on a yard where the owners horses were neglected like they were. Second yard I moved off because my tack was damaged deliberately. I'm moving yard again because my new horse is a gelding and the yard I'm on is mares only, but more importantly I'm moving cos the people at my new yard are so lovely, and I'm actually excited about moving there and going up there every morning and evening. On my mares only yard at the moment I'm lonely - there's never anyone there. Also very excited about hacking out with everyone and learning lots! On my mares only yard no one actually rides!!

It sounds like the hospitality on the mares only yard is as warm as the weather, but it's great that you have found a much better and more welcoming yard and hopfuly it'll be the last time you ever have to change yards :)

-Left job (they were at work)
-Horses bullied in the field (broke lots of fences) and not getting on with amount of turn out
-lack of facilities (I rented my own field)
-Lack of turnout, nasty people, me getting bullied, stabling issues, changed horses so needs were different.

Yard 1) I moved him to straight after I bought him. Winter turnout was promised but never arrived, so I moved him to
Yard 2) Nice big yard, very friendly, Max seemed settled. However, I was then working at a yard 5 miles away so moved him there for convenience.
Yard 3) Yard I worked at. Because it was a riding school I had fantastic facilities all to myself in the evenings after work, the opportunity to have lessons on him with my instructor and a really big stable. Then however I went to uni...so we moved to
Yard 4) Yard that had been set up fairly recently and was still having teething problems. He was on grass livery but the fields were massively overgrazed. So after a few months we moved to
Yard 5) Yard that consisted of a few stables on a farm. He had a HUGE box, but unfortunately I made the mistake of not checking the fields before I moved him. They were overrun with ragwort  that I spent HOURS trying to do something about. However, I then left my uni course and went back to working with horses, so then it was
Yard 3) again, then finally back to
Yard 2) where we've been for the last 2 years and have no intention of moving.:)

THank you. I am very excited. :)
You're very welcome :), in fact it's heart warming to read that even though many of you have had to change yards because of poor facilities, bullying or whatever, that you have been able to find a yard that you and your horses are happy with :)

1st yard - Winter grazing was terrible and when they were allowed out it was to go in a mud bath
2nd yard - Financial problems so I need to turn Nadia out to a field where it will be free and it's less than 1 minute walk from my flat. Were moving Sunday.

When the YO says,'Oh yes, they get TO every day in winter and fails to add 'When the ground is dry'. Dry ground in winter can, in reality be very rare in winter.

Yard 1
Fell out with YO. Realised that I was being treated as an unpaid skivvy when I was actually paying over the odds for grazing with access to a school in a rubbish hacking area.
Yard 2
I rented a field and got a couple of liveries in. Moved Joy when they mistakenly bought a stallion rather than a gelding. It was quicker and easier for me to move Joy then for them to find and move him. I popped her with a friends horses on a field across the lane.
Yards 3
I realised that the yard I was at temporarilly was wonderful because of the big barn with running water, electric, lights and stables. I kept yard 2 but now sub-let that out in total to one person. I'll move back to yard 2 if I need to move from yard 3. I hope I don't have to though as I love it where I am. It's perfect. :)
