so, those of you who know ive been struggling with my darling old horse, i found him dead in his field on saturday.
hes been bad over the summer,he had an operation a few weeks ago and i have been nursing him since. recently he was eating better and had put some weight back on, from having to handfeed every mouthful, so to appearances he was looking better but i knew he wasnt right. i knew really.
on friday night he came for his last feed at a cracking trot and on satrday he didnt appear for his lunch. none of the other horses came either which they usually do to see if i accidently feed them instead, so i went looking for them.
the others were at one side of a meadow and didnt look at me and my boy was lay down at the other side. it looks like he just went to sleep as there were no scrabble marks or dried sweat or anything.
the other horses stayed away and i just sat with the body all afternoon stroking his leg and then later they came over and sniffed and looked at him before they went off to their night pasture
i havent been to the field for a couple of days, a freind is checking the others for me as i dont want to look at them just now

How very sad for you :( At least it sounds like he went on hiw own terms. How old was he?
The only advice I can offer is *do* let other horses help to heal you. Their matter of factly way of life helped me no end after losing Rambo.

I'm so sorry, how very sad for you, but falling asleep in his field was a lovely way to go for him. Also, his friends would have been able to grieve for him too. I hope it's not too long before you can smile again.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss :( ((((HUGS))))
As the others have said, it sounds like he went in his sleep which is a more peaceful and kinder way to go.
I too hope that you will be able to smile again and as soot as said, the other horses can help you to heal in their own gentle and subtle ways, just by being there.
May he RIP always.

That is a lovely idea. And what a smashing life he's had, having you for his mum all that time. So many poor horses are passed from pillar to post and not always loved and cared for so well.
Try to look after yourself at such a sad time, make sure you're eating and drinking properly and getting some early nights. He wouldn't want you to be sad, or poorly, so do take very good care of yourself love.

I am so sorry but it does sound like he drifted off peacefully, I know its painful right now and its something you'll never forget but and you've prob heard this far too many times but time is a great healer - I lost my gelding 3 yrs ago and although I still miss him terribly I can think of him with so many wonderful memories and I can smile rather than cry - take care xx

How sad for you, at least it seems he went in peace and you got to spend that last afternoon with him. I did the same when i found my young dog had died (accidently), Just sat with her on my lap. One of the strangest feeling situations to be in.

Take care of yourself, and take your time with everything the loss of an animal is often one of lives most truly painful experiences, who else loves you unconditionally? Be happy in good times and laugh at the bad, but always remember what he ment to you because that will never change.

thanks everyone
i never really understood why people come online and post when their horse dies but now i do, you lot are the only people i want to talk to about it right now
im being pretty horrible to my OH without meaning to, hes trying to be nice and hug me but i dont want comforting because i dont want to cry and break down and i just want him to leave me alone to grieve
im trying to keep my mind busy by looking at horsehair jewellery
http://www.tailendjewellery.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ID=13&Page=HorseHairNecklaces
,thinking about what i can plant on his grave, and planning the foal im going to have and whether to call it something similar to my old boys name or to give it something completely its own
