What parts of the insurance did you choose to have, eg. public liability etc?
Which bits are really neccessary
I have had him insured for everything previously but want to drop the monthly payments if possible.

I want to insure him for vets bills and not much else really but am i really stupid to insure him for say £500 instead of £2000 to drop the premium.
To be honest if something did happen to him i wouldnt want the money back as he was given to me so I wouldnt have lost anything.

What about public liability and things like LOU and theft are they really needed?:o

LOU is definitely not necessary for most people. It is generally used by people that have posh horses that they are planning on competing to a high level in a particular discipline.

However, I really, really wouldn't skimp on your public liability - if you didn't have this and, for example, were out on the roads and he spooked and caused a car crash (god forbid), you could be sued and really need public liability.

Choosing to reduce the value he's insured for is your choice, just be aware that sometimes that will reduce the amount of vet fees cover you are entitled to. I know that KBIS has a threshhold of £1000 - any lower than that and you have to use the 'leisure horse' policy rather than 'riding horse', so get less vets fees cover.

LOU id really if you want to buy another horse if you had to retire him, would you want the £2000 to buy another horse though, would you be able to buy another horse for £500?

Id have PL plus most yards/shows/events require it as standard.

How much is your tack insured for, maybe you could lower that? Also what is you category of use and what is the category insured for?

At the moment I have:

Sum Insured £3000. (valued at previous to me buying him)
Vet Fees £5000 with a £120 excess
Alternative therapies £500
Non vet fees £500
Personal Liability 1,000,000, £100 excess
Tack i think is around £600.

This costs about £40 pm.

I got him given free so wouldnt be bothered about getting £3000 back as I didnt pay that for him. Also I wouldnt want to replace him so again wouldnt have to think about buying another with insurance money.
I dont need tack insured as It is kept at home and it isnt worth insuring really.

Insurance is up for renual and I have had a quote from petplan for £25 a month which would include:
Sum insured £1000
Vet fees £5000.
Public Liabilty. 1,000,000

but it would drop further if i changed his value to £500, or even less...
