Just a little bit of market research I hope you can help me with....
I know not everyone can buy hay/haylage how they want it from their preferred supplier...just wondered if you buy hay/haylage, how would you prefer it...
Conventinal small bales?
4ft Round Bales
4ft or bigger oblong bales?
Is anyone struggling to get good haylage/hay at a good price at the moment?
Also,
Do you buy large quantities for your whole yard or just for you?
Thanks in advance...

My DIY livery includes ad lib haylage which is delivered in big round bales. If I had to get my own then it would depend on size, I don't currently have storage space. I'd also worry on a big shared yard if I got a big round bale then other people might "borrow" it so I'd probably choose small bales to keep track of it.

Small bales for me. Easier to handle and store and my 2 don't have a lot

Yard makes it's own big round bales usually, although occaisionally they have the oblong ones.
The oblong ones are easier (provided you get it opened right) but as it's full livery it doesn't bother me too much. ;)
When I was on DIY sharing with two other horses, a big round bale was ideal. When I was feeding just Daffy on haylage, I liked the fact that I could get the small round bales.

I like the large oblong bales, find them easier to handle.
I am not having any trouble with supply at a reasonable price.
I buy in for just my horses.

Small bales for me as easier to handle.
Hay is not so easily available here this year & is expensive.

Our current yard provides it so we dont buy at the moment.
At our old yard we used to buy big bales between my 3 and 4 others on the yard.
Round bales were absolutely useless to us. Once opened they would end up all over the yard and a lot wasted.
We did like the option to buy smaller bales in summer as we did not use it as fast.

I get my hay and hayledge included in my livery, and we have large round bales which works well with the number of horses we have on the yard (20+), but if I was buying it just for me I'd want small bales!
As to quality- this years hay seems very dusty up to now, not impressed with it at all, so I guess yes, there is a shortage of good quality hay!:D

big round bales I find better cos you can manover them into place where the square are hard to move without getting a spike + tractor,
round for me :)
