Hello,

I am considering put my horse up for part share, but i have never done this before so i dont no how much to advertise for, so would like some advice from those that share.

My horse is 15hh and is pretty easy to do, although needs a quiet confident rider and is not a novice ride.

She would be for share 3days a week to include either a sat or a sun which ever suits and 2 weekdays.
At the yard we have floodlit school that has jumps in and good hacking.
I would still turnout each morning as will be doing my other pony and will also muck out an prepare feeds so share would just need to bed her down of an evening and pop her feed in once finished.

What would be a reasonable price?
And what do other charge/are charged? and what do you get for this?

Thank you in advance HR.

I pay £15 a week for a nice cob who is really easy going. I do him 2 days a week and can pretty much do what I like with him. I do all the jobs when I go up too. I know the owner of my share charges £20 a week for 3 days. This is pretty reasonable, when you look at the price of an hourly RS lesson these days! Sounds like a nice mare and good facilities you have :)

Sorry to jump in but I need a sharer for my boy, this is my ad:

Super boy who is very well mannered who needs riding 1 – 2 days a week, plus chores doing on the same days. He is a super safe horse, suitable for a nervous novice or adult returning to riding. Minimal financial contribution would be required. Based on very small friendly yard in Hertford :D

I've had no response and I could really do with the help

I think you've got the basics right, you just need to elaborate a bit.

Here's what I usually put - I have tailored it to your ad...

"Sharer wanted for (whatever height) gelding. Two day a week share, days flexible and negotiable to include a weekend day. Sharer to be responsible for stable chores on their days. Stabled at a small but friendly yard in Herford with good facilities (such as indoor outdoor schools - stipulate the facilities that are offered). Suitable for a novice but some basic riding experience preferred. Help with initial routine if needed. Super horse, has no vices and a lovely nature. Forward going but with good brakes. Small financial contribution towards keep required. For more information or an informal chat, please contact ........ Willingess to sign simple share agreement essential.

Hi there

I share a horse (have had her a year this week :D) and I do one weekend day and 2 week days and occasionally more (i.e. if her owner is away she says I can ride as much as I want). I have a similar deal to what you're offering. Owner does weekday mornings as she also has another horse and I just do evenings on my days and ride, though we do chores together at the weekend.

We have a floodlit school with jumps and plenty of hacking. I pay for just under half her upkeep which equates to £100 a month. She's also lovely but always not a novice ride.

I know the share that I have is worth its weight in gold, I do consider myself very lucky. I share a lovely horse, have learnt loads and gained a new friend in the bargain! There's nothing I love more that a lovely leisurely hack at the weekend with Issie, her owner and her other horse!

Good luck in finding a sharer! :)

I pay for my lovely share pony to be shod every 5 weeks and take up the odd bag of carrots / apples etc. I have him 4 days a week, and on my 4 days i do all stable and yard duties. I help poo pick, clean tack etc also.

Thank you for the replys, im in south wales so bit far for most people that have mentioned wanting a share.

I was thinking of asking for £25 per week which would then cover nearly half her costs on a weekly basis. Do people think this is fair?

thank you
HR.

Many people are sharing because they cannot afford to pay for a horse of their own, and this has always been an issue for me with potential share arrangements. One girl wanted £25 a day, and even when I offered to do all ther stable chores to save payng someone else to do it (plus they're the best bit anyway!:p) she wouldn't back down. When I shared last year, it was £9/10 a day for a horse on DIY grass livery, which I think is very reasonable.

HOWEVER it depends on whether the owner sees it as being her advantage or the sharer's advantage; it's interesting how some people pay a person to ride/care for their horse a few days a week, whereas others make the "other carer" pay to be able to do it.

The way my owner put it was simple. He needs to be shod for hacking as there's a lot of roadwork, so £5 a week goes towards that. Then it's £5 a day after that as we also share the jobs. Coco, your horse sounds like mine, very suitable for someone who is a bit nervous cos he is chilled out!

Oh and by the way, I found my share on the classifieds section on New Rider! It's good on there as it sorts by area, which a lot of places don't. It was recommended to me by my sister as a good place to look.

I don't need a sharer financially, but to help keep my mare fit as I only get to ride 3 or 4 times a week. However, I do ask them to pay half shoeing costs, which is a real bargain as my mare is so easy to do in all ways, and a fantastic ride.

However, I seem to find it hard to get someone reliable and committed - my current sharer has gone away this week and "forgot" to mention it to me!

So now I am considering charging a weekly or monthly amount which will perhaps make the sharer more keen to actually turn up and ride?!?

Horses Rule, you need to be clear from the start that your sarer would have to do later afternoons or evenings as you're expecting them to bed down and feed.
When I had a share before I got my boys I used to go up during the days, so I for one would not have been able to comply with your requirements. Unless you're happy to bed down and feed whilst doing your other horse if the sharer has already been earlier in the day?

I've been looking for a share, I have had offers ranging from free (horse has been out of work a year) to half of a full livery bill at a very posh yard which would vary from 150 to 250 a month, which sadly, I can't afford!!!! :) I don't want a diy share though, as time is sometimes limited. I tried one horse so far, but it was sadly extremely dead to the leg and responded not at all to a schooling whip. Hey ho, I will keep on looking..

Preloved too :) Tis where I found Silver :)

Disgruntled - I wouldnt rule out diy - often if you are both flexible you can work it out amongst yourselves :)

Hello

thank you again for the replys.

Dooley, the sharer wouldnt have to bed down as i can do that when doing my other one, it was just in the winter i was thinking if they worked they wouldnt be coming up till the evening so while the horse was cooling off they could be down and then feed, that was all. But i would talk all of this through before starting a share.

Those asking where im based im in Cardiff area.

thanks again

When I shared Brook, i paid £20/week, no chores. I was able to ride as much as i wanted, as no-one else rode her, and her owner just wanted someone to keep her fit. it was a very good arrangement for me!

if i could find someone who would be dedicated and was experienced id be very tempted to get a sharer but it seems like they are hard to find

there was a poster on here wanted to do flatwork and dressage but wasnt allowed, id love someone like that who haas a goal!

I think my struggle might be that I only want someone to hack out. While we are schooling Ozzy and building up our relationship (only had him since 1.8.09) my instructor thinks that I should be the only one to school him. Particularly as we are working on correct bend, outline etc ready for me to enter some dressage competitions (hopefully )

I have a sharer...

She shares for two weekday evenings and a sunday

I will turn out in the mornings in winter but currently they are out 24/7

Jobs include: filling water, feeding the horse she shares and my youngster and rugging up etc as needed (both horses)

I also take her to local shows if i am going

She pays £15 a week which I think is fair as she's happy to do some jobs. Also I don't have a menage (but do have field to ride in and hacking). I think if there was a menage then £20 a week for three days would be reasonable.

btw: I am in essex...a lot of the bigger yards here charge £10 per day for sharers but do have more facilities.

I have made loads new friends its a nice yard very good hacking and schools etc. Saying this I have been there a year.Best of both worlds I have.:D

I was paying £15 pw for 1/2/3/4 days, it changed week to week to suit the owner and other sharer, if one person couldnt get up then someone else could.. also helped that I dont work during the day so am always available.

Could hack, school, compete if i wanted.. Done any chores that needed doing on my days and was more than happy to do them!

*HUMPH* i miss sharing the pretty peter pony :(
