View Full Version : Poisoned field

My friends horse has been poisoned in her field, a man who lives opposite put weed killer down on some baby nettles on the ponies side of the field, she also found grass cuttings there too.
The pony went through amazing pain, blisters in its mouth she banged her head on the stable until it was red raw. The vet tried everything he could but she had to go to hospital, where they found her liver was failing sadly she is now at rest.
How can we stop this man from doing it again? My friend has spoken to him and he'd tried to argue with her! After he killed her pony. They have put some electric fence around the area so none of the other ponies get sick, I just hope this was just lack of common sense on his part, nothing else.

God how appalling, please give my best wishes to your friend she must be going through hell.
I have a neighbour with a totally neglected garden, bear with me, I contacted the council regarding this and was told in no uncertain terms that if I were to put weed killer over my fence into her property I could be up for prosecution. I imagine the same goes for any ones property.
I guess it all depends on how they want their relationship to be as neighbours ( I assume they are). Perhaps politely informing him of it as if he was not aware. Imagine if you were organic farming and some one done that, I am sure you would have some come back.
Feel so sorry for her

Make absolutely sure it was the weedkiller that did for her before you make accusations.
Not being funny, but be careful.
We have a lady who throws all her garden rubbish over into our silage park. She makes a compost heap in our field. Once the grass is cut we put cows. sheep or horses in to eat off the bits the baler's missed.
She throws all sorts of things onto our side, including old corriagated sheets, wood, plant pots, and goodness knows what plant trimmings. We have asked her to stop, but she ignors us.....my man goes round and throws it all back over!:p :p :p
We have considered ESA grants (Environmentally Sensetive Area) if we did, if anyone used weedkiller on our holding we'd loose grant. Organic status too would be lost if someone threw a non approved herbicide over the fence.........If I had solid proof that someone had done this to one of my animals I'd take him to court for compensation....but you need a bullet proof case and lab reports and vet reports and tissue samples............

You would probably need post mortem results to make a case . Also collect a sample of the nettles with weed killer on it.

We have taken the weed killer away from him and the horse is having a post mortem. But I don't think they will take him to court, as long as all the insurance goes through ok. My friend has spoken to him and he told her that the council put weed killer round the bottom of the lamp posts and we (as in horse riders) let our horses eat around them. This sounds like a person trying his hardest to dig himself out of a hole. I think he knows what he has done and hopefully he will think before putting down weed killer again.

I hope it's his insurance you are talking about & not the horses! Otherwise it's your friend's insurance that will go up. Encourage your friend to claim against his insurance.
