View Full Version : What do you use NR for???

A poster recently said he/she wasn't going to pay the sub because he/she mainly came on here to help out other people.
That got me thinking about all the different ways people use NR. Do you come on mainly to get advice, or to give it. To teach or learn. To start debates (Puzzles!) or to gossip/chat to horsey friends. Is it for information/entertainment/company etc

Do you ever follow people's ádvice. Have you changed the way you see things through NR or do you generally try to change other people over to YOUR way of thinking. Or is it a way to avoid boredom in the office (ahem)..... Or a bit of everything?

I like that I can get advice off people who've shared similar experiences and tips on different things to try. I'm not sure I've ever completely changed my opinion on the basis of what someone else has said but it's always useful to see things from a different perspective.

I also love giving advice and like the thought that I can help someone out based on some of my experiences. Having worked as an instructor I enjoy teaching and although it's very hard to do that through a forum you can still give hints and tips and make suggestions on new things to try

I like to read some of the more 'gossipy' threads becasue they are fun but I have a good group of friends at my yard who I use for my 'horse fix' on a regular basis. I think I would use the forum more for socialising if I was on a private yard or didnt have a horse at the time

I'm still a little undecided about paying the subscription, £10 isnt a lot at all so I may just take the plunge because it is a great way to pass some time while I'm procrastinating at work!

I come for the pics and the advice. I will be staying because the subs aren't extortionate, if you look at them amortized (can you say that in English?) over 365 days.

chat. friendly people when im here alone.

like to see reviews of products but i dont use it (nr)for horse care advice.

im an experienced horse-owner and rider and if i really needed advice i would go to my trainer/vet/farrier, but if i can give advice im happy to offer it.

no i dont try to change people over to my way of thinking, people have there own ways of doing things and hearing about their views is endlessly fascinating!

so for me its a social tool really, for once i actually get to chat to other horsy people :)

To fill my working day! I work 12 hour shifts, and apart from 2 hours where i help someone get up and the do housework, i sit on my arse with my laptop on my legs!!

It is interesting to read threads, get advice, look at pics and get ideas of different ways to do things. Plus i have met lots of people from here.

I started on here to learn. I got my first horse just under 3 years ago and boy has it been a steep learning curve :p

I'm still on here to learn and contiually challenge my beliefs but have found I am learning less now.

I now like to share my experiences and point out to those going through periods of stress for having made mistakes that it's ok to do so and that we aren't all perfect.

I also like to provide balance and express my views based on the fact the having horses is most definately not for sport. My ponies are pets and I do this for leisure and fun only. I'm not out to improve or be serious in my riding, only to get out in the countryside and have a blast!

I always said I wasn't on NR for any sort of social networking reasons but tbh I have missed the huge number of people that have left NR so although I'll be staying on after 1st Oct I have also joined another forum - prior to all this change I was only on NR - where many of the old faithful have gone.

I joined NR just after moving to my own yard and was after ground care advice. I've made a few friends, found a wealth of support most evident when i lost my beloved pony. And I've learned about lots of new aspects of horse care (had never heard of treeless saddles before i joined!). The old faithfuls i always turned to left a long time ago, but i'm hoping they will rejoin post october. Also, you get lots of great links to interesting articles and products.

its nice to hear other peoples opinions and problems, hints, etc, and in my case it a good diet aid, as if im browsing here, im not grazing, which i tend to do when im in the house, bored.

I joined because I was contemplating a treeless saddle and every time I googled yet another question I came up with a thread on here by No_Angel:D. I originally used the site for help with bitless and treeless questions then finally admitted to my confidence crisis and got loads of help.

I have met new friends through here who have helped me so much with Arnie and hopefully now its time for me to help people back.

I specifically try to help others who are struggling with their confidence as its not long since it was me (and on bad days it still can be;))

I've also learned a lot about different methods of horsemanship - particularly nh and have really changed the way I deal with my boy:D

Relaxation after work really .......... I'm not that keen on the TV. I used to come on NR during working hours, until my evil employers put a block on our internet use :mad:

Currently converting an old shed into a chicken coop. Have a mother hen, 7 chicks and a cockrel (unrelated). When they are settled I'll take some pics ;) Still saving up to get the stables done - will be loose barn this winter. Tackroom walls are too damp to paint - I have been re-mortaring the outside but need to put plasterboard up in the inside I think . Pics to follow if I manage to do it before the forum goes paid...

I joined earlier this year to get some advice and to generally see what other people get up to with their horses.

you get to read some interesting stuff on here and some really good debates!:) Also people on here do have some really good advice, ideas, solutions to help you.

I also love looking at the pictures of your horses - show jumping, hacking out etc.

In all its just a really nice forum :D

Advice, support, chat - I don't post a great deal but I spend hours on here reading posts etc when I should be working :o - and have picked up soooo many valuable hints, tips, advice - I returned to horse ownership after a break of some decades and it was thanks to NR that I learned all about the rise of natural horsemanship (wasn't heard of when I was last into horses!) and have since read about it, turned to a NH associate for help, and generally found it one of the most fascinating aspects of caring for horses. So - thanks NR!

I also love all the pics.:)

I occasionally ask for advice that I forgot to ask my RI about in my lesson (and that I would probably forget about before the next one!). But mostly I lurk and have a look at the pictures - I love them ALL even if I don't always comment!

I love reading some of the debates between knowledgeable people with different opinions, and I like reading about people's problems - I hope one day I'll be a horse owner and will hopefully have absorbed some of the advice that people have given, not just about horse health and stable management, but also about dealing with stupid or confrontational fellow liveries/livery owners!
