I know this might sound silly but I am so scared of leccy fencing :o

I never used to be that bothered about it but about a year ago, I accidentally was leaning on a gate when the fencing leant on it and the shock went up my finger through my arm and all down one side of my body - it actually through me backwards. It was so painful I had burst into tears (and it takes a lot for me to cry because as you all know, living in the horse world you are constantly wounded :o) and my arm felt really, really heavy for the rest of the day.

My mum's a nurse and even she was worried, it was such a strong shock and has happend twice. The voltage must have been so high on it and when I mentioned it to the YO she said, "Oh it shouldn't be too much of a shock..." even though no one else had ever been zapped!

And now at my new yard I got zapped by the fencing and I don't think it was as strong as the other yard's was but it still shot up my hand and through my arm and it really hurt.

I'm now really paranoid and anxious if I have to go near it and want to actually burst into tears if I'm helping with moving the fencing back etc. as I HATE going near it, the shock is like nothing I've ever felt before... Sounds ridiculous but I never had a problem with it a year ago but since them 3 shocks, it's completely unerved me.

Anyone else scared of leccy fencing?

Would't say that I'm scared of it - but I dont feel the shock that much - but a good trick I learnt at college to check if the fence is on or not - is to get a blade of grass, and touch the fence with that and you'll feel the shock like a little tickle- better than getting the full whack!

Hell yes - bl0ody hurts

I use sticks and implements to lift rogue bits if I have forgotten to switch it off at the mains. I rarely go crawl through our fencing if it's on, OH will happily shimmy through it if it's a quicker route to where he needs to be.

So will the horse given half the chance :D

It is always on, as it runs right through the main fixed wire fencing - when I detach it from the mains it's of course off, but don't like it when it's on :|

Can't say I'm that keen on it myself .......... still it serves a good purpose i.e. keeping my horse off loads and loads and loads of lush grass :p

I was actually carrying a full water bucket under the fencing yesterday, I obviously didn't stoop down low enough and got a shock on my back, which caused me to jump and spill the water everywhere :o:o

I was leading a horse once and touched it by accident as i was opening the fence, the horse reared up and i tried to hold onto the lead rope and broke my finger.. that wasn't really the fence that caused the bad bit, but i am wary of it now.

I had to fix some fencing up when the other girls at the yard were on holiday. The horses kept getting on the lush grass, so i had to do it myself. Anyway, after fixing it all up, it took me over 15 minutes of standing looking at the fencing to get the courage together to touch it to see if it was working... pathetic!:o

I don't mind electric fences when they're off, but I don't trust them when they're switched on, electricity may be very handy, but it's also a very sneaky and nasty bugger when it zaps you completely at random :) lol

It's entirely understandable that you have a fear of getting zapped again, alot people would be given the same experiences and pain that you had experienced, but at least you're alright and that's what's important :)

Been shocked loads lol but were really bad ... one was when i pushed a gate with my knee and it went into the wire ... blone moment haha and i got a zap. the other was worse ... dragged by a horse and where i held the metal lead rope clip the shock attached me to the lead rope until the electrick stopped. Dont understand how that one happened but yeah I am very wary lol x

Cant say I particulary like electric fencing especially since I was closing the metal gate one icy morning, I always tied a leadrein round the gate but this morning I had the metal clip in my hand holding the gate, I some how caught the elctric fencing and the bolt went up one arm an out the other one touching the gate, it jolted me backwards, I managed to get back to the stables, where I sat for ages, think I must have passed out for a while. I was left with a burn mark on my hand. Really scared me!!!

Electric fencing should not be able to give you that much of a shock surely?? Doesnt the energiser make the electric current not so high? I am lucky and have got a tester but like the other lady I have used a leaf or blade of grass to test. I have to admit though, I have so much electric fencing that perhaps the current is not as good because of this. Poor you. We always make a point of turning it off before we go into the field but I suppose not every yard is able to.

Must admit, I really don't like those fences either. Did get a belt from one once and it wasn't pleasant!

I'm so wary of electricity anyway due to work mainly, seen lots of not very nice videos. You don't mess with 25,000 volt overhead lines!! So electric fencing is nothing really compared to that but I've always been a bit scared of it anyway!

For some reason I seem to blow a lot of light bulbs and pick static up where others don't aswell!

I HATE the stuff, all ours ia mains powered, we do have a couple of 12 volt jobs, but I get really upset if I get zapped.

I sent myself flying over the whole fence once when I got zapped testing it..

I got a jolt from one once, all I could see was white, I felt the hair standing up on my head, and I felt my feet actually lift off the ground  I didn't realise what had happened at first and no one else noticed anything had happened :(

won't touch the stuff nowadays

I'm CONSTANTLY shocking myself on the back because I'm too lazy to open it and just duck under
I got one of my gloves wet the other week and accidently touched the fence. That one hurt. Alot.
The new pony was terrified of it at first, bless him, he sniffed it and got a shock on the nose. It must have taken me ten minutes to get him in his field because he wouldn't go near the damn fence :o
But yes, I'm another one thats a bit scared of electric fences ;)

I was on another forum a while back where someone was reminiscing about their childhood games of touching their bare bottom to electric fencing for a dare!!

Bet none of you have done that! :)

Nope. I always touch it on purpose to check that it is fully charged:D If I don't check that its working at full pelt, my cob will just walk through the fences:eek:.

really hurts if youre wearing steel toe cap boots.

my old horse never respected leccy wire, he'd jump it, roll under it, or walk through it if the mood took him

I am not scared of it. But it does hurt. I got zapped a few months ago but it was only on a low ish voltage.

It does hurt

I always test mine with the little gadget that gives a reading. I was stroking my horse by the fence one day and my bum touched the wire, the shock shot through me and pinged him. He would not come near me for a couple of days :D.

On another occasion my dog went into the field after a storm when a piece of the fence was low near the post. Being a boy he decided it was a good place to spend a penny, cue dog leaving field at high speed :o.

It is horrible, but I'm always super careful and turn it off before going into my horses field. Luckily they have their own field so I just leave it off whenever I'm bringing them in etc.

i wish ruby shared your fears - she happily ploughs through it
i did once & only once - cos really i am a responsible mother & teacher - use a chain of children to demonstrate that electricity travels - we even did some experiments to see if wearing shoes made a difference:D

I'm terrified of it!
Which is why I don't electrify mine :o
I hate hate hate even the tiniest electric shocks (say from trampolines etc.), they're like one of my worst fears!

That happened to me too! I had Shadow's lead rope in 1 hand and fence post in the other shocking me!! OUCH!!!

I dropped it but by this point the rest of the herd were heading towards the opening!! Queue trying to shoo them back in and shouting to turn the electric off!! What a scene!!!

mine is battery charged, runs on 2 little DD batteries, lol, BUT it still gives
a powerful 'WHAM' if you touch it:eek:

I have only been dealing with electric fencing, battery powered so not too strong ... I was leading my cob through a field where there was another horse ... other horse and cob did NOT get on ... and 1 side of the electric was NOT on, but 1 side inexplicably was. So I had cob and other horse wheeling around each other on one end of the lead rope and I repeatedly shocked myself ... maybe 5 times ... as I tried to just unhook it so I could get my horse through! My hand tingled for the rest of the day lol but it wasn't too bad.
