Have a new field shelter going up today and no one in the paint industry seems able to give me advice on what products can be used and not be toxic to horses if they ingest them by chewing.
Any ideas?

We used water based products. It means it has to be done more often
to keep them looking tidy but has no creasote (sp??) in which can burn
the Horses skin.

You can get a paint/treatment that is ok to use where animals are goin to be, my sister use to use it to paint the fence posts with. i can not for the life of me think what it is called tho.
I normally use B&Q`s own make fence paint, it is water based like FAIRLADY said to use.
And they do some nice colours too.:)

as it is totally untreated wood, then it really needs something as a base coat to preserve it and then a coloured top coat.
I wasn't going to use creocote, i.e replacement creosote, as it just runs off.
But i have rung Dulux, Sandoline, Sikkens, Crown, and got nothing sensible out of any of them. Ideally i want to put on something that will last 4-5 years rather than needing doing annually.
I am completely confused.

not much help but I tend to use old engine oil on untreated wood first - don't think it's toxic but does have the advantage of treating the wood and stopping chewing at the same time.
About a week later then it's normally OK to paint.

Cuprinol is animal safe as soon as it is dry - we use it on the cat houses.
You can use the wood shades if you want colour.
Wickes do a cheaper version that is also ok. Use a light colour for the first treatment as you can always darken it later.
