Ruby go ther stable fleece on but I'm wondering whether to start putting on her stable rug. She's got the buil of an ID but the coat of a TB and is a wimp. My friends TB is getting all fluffy with her winter coat but Ruby's still smooth with her summer coat. To stable rug or not to stable rug, that is the question! Through the day she's still unrugged, I'm not that soft lol, but it is freeing of a night and there is no top door on her stable. What is everyone else doing?

My two are still living out and unrugged! I have increased their feed, they are also getting breakfast now, and I'm adding corn oil and MSM to their feeds. The had molasses in their tea tonight, too, and they get hay twice a day as well.

Yeah that's the way to be. Unfortunately due to mud fever and a kick in the field I had to start bringing in Ruby earlier than planned and am now dealing with a wimpy hoss lol. I planned to start bringing her in at bonfire night but it hasn't worked out like that. This is my first Autumn with her and so I was just wondering when to do what (if that makes sense?).

My tb is out 24.7 with a field shelter/stable. She has got her medium weight on with a neck cover, night and day. She prob wouldnt need it during the day but she is in one of her mareish moods at the mo and i am 38wks pregnant so its easyer to leave it on.

She s only now starting to get her wooly coat

well my girls coats are certainly thicker but not very wooly yet, they've been turned out with l/w rugs on just as a wind break and to shelter from the few down pours we've had but I would say they are certainly warm enough.

I am a meany pants and neither of ours will be rugged at night (one is an old tb) until it goes to at least minus 3. They are porky tho and vet said to leave off rugs whenever poss. So long as they are sheltered I don't worry too much.

I've just started rugging my newfie to stop him getting too woolly - as I don't really want to clip him as he's living out all winter. But then someone told me that it is the shorterning hours of daylight that make the winter coats come through, not the temperature. Is that right????

I must be a real softie then, but in my defence i do have a whimp of a horse!
Alfie (tb) has his 100g LW on in the day and stable rug on at night, and he's got a nice woolly coat too :)

Keeping the rug off for longer will help her grow a coat during this Autumn months and thus help her more during Jan-Feb when it is freezing. Horses are comfortable down to -10 degrees C as long as they are dry, sheltered with plenty of food. It's us humans that are whimps!

Horses are amazing at keeping warm!

I put a fleece on my lad yesterday - he's had a light sheet on all summer (to keep the flies off) and he's gotten really woolly!

im positivly evil compared to you lot. My two are still out 24/7 unrugged and Jen was even clipped on Sunday!! (only a trace clip im not THAT mean)

Jasper my yearling will be out all year unrugged. Jen will come in at night around november but still unrugged, shes still got to much weight on and her lameness issues have made it hard to get it off so vet said to let her shiver it off

I've been rugging Puz in a stable rug for a little while now she's a Welsh x Trad who get's a thick coat but as is getting a bit older these days does tend to get a bit stiff when it gets chilly.

The 2yr old who lives out had a rain sheet on for the last few days as we've had quite a lot of rain and she got a touch of rain scald last year, but other than that will stay naked for a bit yet, I'll leave her for another few weeks or so before putting anything on her with a filling and as we come into Jan I'll probs use something with a neck on it as it starts to get really cold
