Does anyone know if there is any difference in rehoming a flat race horse to a NH race horse?

When people talk about the retraining of ex-racers am I right in thinking this refers to the fact that they have no bend etc and need flatwork training or am I totally wrong and retraining means training them not to be fast lunatics who run in a straight line?

Any advice welcome before I embark on something stupid

I read something about this the other day but cant remember where! NH horses are more likely to be chilled out and used to a GP saddle than a flat racer. NH horse may not need to be rebroken and migth be more schooled. Thats all i can remember of what I read!

Thanks for the reply stressy :)

Its a NH horse that I might be rehoming so that sounds good to me!! By all accounts its quite a chilled out horse but the more advice I get the better!

Anyone else?

Eml....That seems to tie in with pics on the racing website.....their horses are being hacked out etc with what looks like normal tack and longer length normal leg position.

Fab.....thanks for the help.

NH horses are treated more like normal horses, and also are used to carrying 'normal' weights. They are often turned out, and some trainers do school them so that they are quite well trained, can lengthen shorten, do basic stuff.

Flat horses particularly at the lower end don't get that investment and often are more fizzy, particularly the sprinters as they are used to jumping off and going like the clappers in a straight line for 5 furlongs.

If you get a NH horse that has done NH at Fontwell, it will have had to do a figure of 8 jumping course, so should be able to go on both reins! Some horses cannot handle Fontwell as it is a tight circuit with turns....

Many NH trainers will give you a horse as often they are much more caring about their horses compared to the big flat yards where the horses are basically canon fodder.

so would point to pointers be NH trained? i am trying to track down my boys owners before last who brought him from yard as owners i brought him from are either deliberatley with holding his history or really are stupid and never asked wat hes done. as we're away to start some serious re training but it would be nice to know if its a case of reminding him or starting from scratch!! x x

A Pointer can be anything from the hunt secretary's cob to a tb - if you are serious about it, you have a tb which hunts. But I have seen the hunt secretary's cob go round a ptop course in the members race.

All depends how seriously you take it...

Or you unload horse, let master see it, and hastily reload before it kills anyone

EML you clearly had better contacts, we actually had to participate.....and get our card marked. mind you this was years ago when point to points really were for everyone.

All shapes and sizes would have a bash in the members race, suitably fortified with a bit of brandy beforehand.

Mine also years ago and not where I am now. I used to ride for a lady who would take four 'out' only two of which went anywhere, all TBs!

I think our current hunt you have to be seen out for the morning!!
