What do you peeps think about this horse tax business?
The government in their infinate wisdom  are proposing a "stealth tax" for horse owners to help fund a new government agency which will deal with animal diseases. This tax is going to cost £10.50 per year, per horse, which doesn't seem a lot but what benefit will we get? New bridleways? Nup

Here's more detail about the proposal http://blog.equinecompare.co.uk/2009/10/stop-horse-owners-getting-taxed.html

What do you peeps think? I might be missing something but I really can't see why horse owners should have to pay this tax

if everyone set up a protest and refused to pay it, would it cost more money for them to try to sue us all?? and how are they going to get it-- sounds costly to me ie admin. think its just some idiot sat at a desk trying to justify the salery he earns by having a "good idea" which as ussual when the "experts" start thinking, is impractical and useless, to the general public

This tax was mentioned on Breakfast this morning, in relation to farm animals. Horses were not mentioned.

Well, getting the info for horses with a passport is not a problem for them, its all been collected and recorded on NED........so i expect it is a case of waiting for the form to drop through the letter box! What they will do if no-one pays well that would be interesting to see, they are intending to put it on everything, Cow, chickens, pigs, sheep, different levys , but as usual the highest band is going to be the equine, now its for disease control, prevention they say, can't remember the last time there was widespread outbreak of anything in this Country and no we don't want one, but if there was we would still be having to pay, not sure on the exact number of horses that would generate this income but bet your bottom dollar it will be going to help fund some other areas not necessarily the horse industry!

From the Farmers and Farmers Union interest in this over last few days, don't think they are going to get an easy ride on implementation.

This NED thingy, I thought you had to join it, I mean, does it contain ALL the horses that are passported in the UK? Cos I haven't joined it - and I'm sure I did a search and I couldn't see either of mine (even tho they have passports of course). Sorry if I sound dumb, just I don't understand how they're going to get / collate information on us without us knowing?

You have to join it to use it fully, it was collated by information provided by the PIO's, so technically every horse with a passport should be on there, there are various duplications as information was also supplied by other organisations as well, I found two of mine quite easily and the other one I think I have found, just need to check the passport number.

the thing that frightens me is someone mentioned on the previous thread about this, that it was to control spread of disease, and i really dont like the idea of having some penpushing twit say i have to have my animals destroyed because of some panic about a disease, which is supposedly going to wipe half of us out, but never actually does. or maybe thats what its all about- a plot to finally get horses off the road permanently. (lol)

Horse tax stinks, but we will probably end up with it

I have joined the NED and all of mine are on it, the two coloureds twice.

They have managed to get my old lads date of birth wrong though
