We had some friends from down south visiting today, so went to the yard to show Kelly off (as you do).

I was absolutely amazed out how chilled she was in the field (she's been so relaxed since her teeth were done, and gets better every day). I took her rug off as it was quite warm and gave her a couple of apples, and we chilled out with her for an hour or so and went home, me really proud of her for being so good.

So I went back at to give her her tea and re-rug her. She was restless because her fieldmate was in having his dinner, but she wandered off down the bottom of the field by the time I was ready for her. I called her, and she came thundering down the field at a flat out gallop. I was convinced she wasn't going to stop, and come over the gate (she's done it before) but I called out to her to steady up, then put both hands up and yelled "STOP!!!" and she screeched to a halt with inches to spare.

I've only just calmed down!

Know what you mean - guess its just the unpredictability of their behaviour that freaks us out!!
Mine went the opposite way today - arrived at the field to find two horses in the field instead of one???!! and mine had broken out of his electric fenced off bit. We still don't know how his friend got into the field - the fence is about the same height as his withers. When I went to take the other horse back my guy went daft, bucking and farting and I thought defo don't want to be riding you today! But I did and he was the perfectly relaxed gentleman.
They keep us on their toes!!

I had a scary experience this weekend with my share horse, although it was to the other extreme!

Went into the field to bring him in for a ride, and noticed he was lying down with one of his field mates (never seen him lying down before in the 7 months I've been sharing him) Anyway I called him and walked over to where they were, his mate looked up, but mine didn't move an inch. I carried on calling thinking he'd at least move a little, but nothing...

By this point I was getting a little worried! (his mate was on his feet by now) I got to where they were, and he looked up (phew!!) He then stretched completely out, layed his head on the floor and let out the loudest groan. I wasn't sure what to make of it, was he injured or ill?!! and called my (more experienced) friend over to ask her opinion.

She promptly clipped his leadrope on and asked him to get up (standing well back of course) Sure enough, he got to his feet and had a huge yawn. He was just tired and didn't want to get up!! His face said it all, how I imagine anyone would look at having a rope attached to them and being made to get out of bed!! Bless him!!!

Needless to say, I felt rather silly!! :p Hopefully a good groom, nice gentle hack and some carrots made up for my disturbance!! :D
