You can never really know how a youngster will react to clipping, throughout the year I've been running trimmers around her, under her chin, trimming feathers, ears that kind of thing so she has experienced the noise and vibration, but tonight clipped her with clippers and she stood munching hay without actually caring what I was doing. So pleased as I think the 1st experience can set them up for life, she was backed in July this year (she's 4) and with her thick fluffy coat she's really started to get sweaty when ridden even for a short time so it was definitely needed - phew glad thats done - only trouble is she's a coloured so her pure white marking on her neck now makes her mane look grubby, so another job I now need to do!

Well done, sounds like a perfect job :) Internet forums are littered with tales of clipping woe at this time of the year because people didn't put the necessary preparation in, nice to see a success story for a change :)

Excellent! Well done you for doing all the prep work - does make me laugh when people throw youngsters in at the deep end then stand there looking puzzled as to why their cuddly pony is trying to kill them!! lol

Well done, good for you :)

No matter how much I try I still can't clip my Trakehner's ears or anywhere near them, but having said that, he hates his ears being touched by hand and is a bit headshy, but I'm proud that he lets me do everywhere else.

Even my bolshy cob, who suffers badly with sores/scabs etc if his feathers grow, he is so itchy, but he lets me clip his feathers even though it is painful for him, but he is definately better for having those horrible feathers whipped off, he is loads more comfortable and then I can put cream on him and it seems to clear up. He just stands there, bless him, with his bottom lip quivering.

They get loads of cuddles and treats after :)

Just waiting for my blades to come back from sharpeners, then, like you, I've got 3 to do. Can't wait.

Nice to see someone taking their time - I have seen some awful clipping threads recently (not so much on here but a couple of terrible ones on another forum I go onto).

My youngster got his first clip at 6 months old:D. He was supervising his big brother and looking very interested so he got the width of the blades in a 6 inch strip taken off down his neck. Every time Skippy got clipped, Arnie got the clippers near him, on him or wee bits off him. When he finally got his first "proper" clip at 4 he didnt bat an eyelash:D

I used to have to clip my cob's legs for mud fever and she got very very stressed, you could clip the rest of her totally bare, but she hated the legs, the vibration, tickles. It took me about a week to do them a bit at a time in the end i decided not to do it and use another way of managing it. Despite being patient with her she just hates her heels being done and got very fraxious.

We had to clip tummy of a rescue donkey all matted, very very long tangled coat, we ran the clippers a few times, let her sniff them, and she stood like a lamb, which was amazing given some of the bits were elbows, under tummy, tops of legs, all the ticklish bits. we just did a bit each night till she was done. She was amazing and ended up with a very smart trace clip.
