I have had D for 2 years now. He has always spooked in the school - not just with me so i know is isnt necessarily anything that im doing. I cant ride him at the bottom end and he is dreadful going past the half way mark down one of the long sides! So i have never really had that much fun schooling.
I have been on holiday for 2 weeks - D also had a 2 week break. Since i have been back i have ridden him in the school 5 times now AND NOT ONE SPOOK!!!!?????? i have even been riding at the bottom end of the school.
what has happened????
this morning i was telling my very wise freind and she said 'I wonder if it was a habit, and now with the 2 week break the habit has been broken!'
I wonder.......................???????????????
I think she may have a point???
what do you guys think??

She could be right :)
Or, have you relaxed more since you've been away?
Or, has the school changed at all?

I would be inclined to think that something that was bothering him is no longer there. There must be something different if he has been doing this for 2 years and then suddenly stopped.

Someone (one of his mates trying to stir probably;)) has whispered into D's ear that first they stop riding you, then they try again and if you're still naughty then you dissapear, to the pie factory. :p (I know you'll know I'm joking lol)

Haven't really got anything serious to say other then it could have been a habit but I'm more likely to think he just views it differently now for whatever reason. Harvey is no longer spooking in the school either and there was no reason for his stopping of it either so

It could be you're more relaxed/not anticipating, it could be he's not as school sour now as he's had a break and therfore likes schooling a bit more now.?

Really don't know

Bad to say, if it were my Storm then I would say that it had become a habit. She only needs to spook in one particular area for real say, at a rabbit or pheasant and then that area becomes her spooky corner forever, that is until I coax her through it or she follows Joe!

Well - i have to report that some sort of miracle has taken place - stillno spooking nearly 3 weeks now! Rode last night and again this morning and for the first time in nearly 2 years i felt confident enough that he wouldnt do anything nasty that for part of the time i rode with out holding my balance strap!!! Hurrrah!!!
Still cant quite believe it. Its a bloomin miracle!!!! :):)

A lot of people believe a horse should have one week off for every three weeks on. That means a 4 week break every 3 months. It keeps their heads clear of any clutter as they dont have time to build up too much 'hot stuff' in their brains, eg. being over schooled. After all we get a few weeks off every year.
