I've just joined the board since starting riding again recently and seem to read a lot of threads referring to past accidents/injuries... is it basically a fact of life that if you spend a lot of time with horses, at some point you'll be laid up with a broken ankle/collarbone/finger???

Don't want to post in case I jinx myself :D I have been riding/driving, with my own horses, for 27 years, plenty of bumps and bruises but so far......

I would suggest maybe you should start that Thread again with the title

"What bones has your horse broken"

Think you would get more responses :D:D:D

See!!! Us old horse riders are so tough we barely even mention the bits that broke many moons ago - just remember the bumps and bruises:D

Noooo - dont be scared bluntcrayon - I know many old riders who have never broken anything - promise;) Also think it depends on what you do once your onboard - risk of injury must increase with each death defying discipline you try musnt it?

Personally think thats why a sedate little hackey around the lanes gives me all the adrenalin rush I can cope with these days:D

I have have been walked over and broke three ribs, had a hoof go through my riding hat, doctor said he I hadnt of been wearing it I would have been dead and been kicked in the head and ended up looking like I had done ten rounds in a boxing ring - again another blues and twos trip.

Apart from the fall's when I was younger and learning to ride - think I may be a bit accident prone either that or like the nutters!!!

Luckly now I am getting a bit older (grand old age of 31) I have settled down with a nice mare, not to say she cant have her moments :D

reassured that some people are unscathed! i am only planning on hacking and light schooling, no 4 ft jumps for me. my poor sis broke her hand though last week, just fell off on the beach and doesn't even know how she did it!

eta she was galloping when she fell off, just realised that sounded as if she was just sat there!

Not seriously. I have fallen off 3 times, with just muscular issues, have had my finger bitten as T tried to get a polomint -so not his fault - and had my foot stood on numerous times.

Part and parcel of horse ownership.

Still lvoe them though!!

Touch wood, never broken anything or been hurt badly in 15 years of riding ... like Cortrasna said, depends what you do when you're onboard, if you love your eventing and hunting prob more likely to get hurt lol. I have had quite a few falls but have only hurt myself once where my back was a bit achey the next day. Haven't falled off my share cob yet in 6 months, mainly because he is a slow boy and not spooky generally!

Yep, I have honestly never broken anything in all those years, other than my coccyx off the riding school horse. I have had some fairly challenging horses but am no eventer and have tended towards the hacking/endurance direction, with driving I am more of a hooligan having done a lot of local level driving trials with my little guys but worst there has been a sprained ankle the week before my wedding

I will not be impressed if my next post is from A&E though ;)

I have just had my first fall after nearly three years riding. I was a bit bruised but no broken bones.

But my brother (who doesn't ride) was on a farm day a few months ago with his son. They were on a 'walk around the farm' ride and he managed to fall off at walk! He was in intensive care for four days - flying doctors were called out, then sent back and a helicopter sent because he had a punctured lung. He had 4 broken ribs, punctured lung, broken shoulder and 4 cracked vertabrae. They said he just landed badly on his shoulder.

So it can happen but I choose not to worry about what might happen - otherwise you wouldn't do anything. Although I do wear a body protector now!

Things like that always happen to my brother! He is finally getting better but it was worrying at the time.

My nephew thought it was very exciting with the Flying Doctors and everything. Then he was more worried that they wouldn't let him ride back with the others!

As I speak, my husband is sat with his foot in plaster. He was jumping our mare when they missed a stride and took off too early. Ploughed through the fence and fell. Steve managed to get off clear but her back and came over and squashed his foot. Welina was fine though thank goodness.

I have had badly bruised toes and footbut tough wood not broken anything (well maybe my toes have been broken, but not bothered going for Xray ;) )

Before anyone thinks that riding is really dangerous, my daughter fractured her wrist last year....................running!!!! She didn't fall, she bumped into someone.

*Touch Wood* I have never hurt more than my pride when I've fallen off riding.

But I've twice broken fingers whilst leading/lunging. Not very strong finger bones, they just snap like twigs :D:D

I have managed to fall off and give myself concussion. Its very odd not being able to remember things.I also have managed to break both feet (not at the same time though). First one was i was holding the horse for my friend to get on and i dont know what she did but she managed to fall off mounting, it scared the horse and horse jumped sideways landing on my foot. second one was a big cob and my foot just managed to get in the way. Also had all the usual bumps and bruises and last weekend i was bitten on the back by my share horse while putting her saddle on. Not her fault though some nasty people who owned her in the past use to ride her in a saddle which would fit a shetland pony and shes a 14.3 arab so has issues with her saddle

I've fallen off, been stood on (head and legs), and been kicked (knees, head, hip, back) and I have never (touch wood) broken a bone, had serious concusion, torn cartilage and torn muscle fibre but thats it  and I've been riding since I was 5 :D, used to break in youngsters and school nutty ponies :D (thats were most of my injuries are from ) used to be when ever one of the little kids got chucked off I had to get on :D

I've resisted reading this until now cause I too had the same thoughts looking around this forum - My tally of falls off my new horse is three so far so its in my mind at the moment and although never done any serious damage from riding (touch wood),in other walks of life I'm pretty accident prone (starting at the age of 1 when the docs found a needle completely inserted in my ankle?!)
So I'm well aware of the risk I'm taking.
Worst riding accident so far - being winded - oh that's horrible horrible horrible!!!

My first pony never injured me, she didn't bite, only once raised her back feet (both barrels - but missed :D ) I fell off her a half dozen times and worst that happened was I broke my specs! I dunno if it was just a case of being a teenager and you 'bounce' better when you're young ...

new horse has left bruises from biting me and the spectacular ones I got when he 'threw' me two weeks after I bought him ... I have pics!!
