Secret Trick
21st Jun 2003, 01:00 PM
I don't just mean with buying a horse, but also gear etc?!
I can't think of any good gear bargins I've had to date, so have to say it was Trick :-) He was a bargin at $500, or 175 pounds :D
But he's absolutely priceless (not just my opinion!)
PS Excuse the bad english in the title, just realised once I'd posted and now its annoying me!!!

Some Dobson and Horrell (sp) Itch Free for £5 instead of £10.50 (now it cost £11)
Lunge whip, lunge line and comb £14
Brushing boots £5 per pair
Leather Harness £60
excercise cart £65
Rugs for £10 each
Horsie book (from e-bay)
I laways look on e-bay first and other auction sites.
Then of course the best bargain was Rhi £300 and she now rides, drives and jumps.

Dolly was given to me, but I had to buy her saddle from her old owner for £400. The saddle didn't fit, so I now think that I bought Doll for £400 and and the new bargain is the £200 saddle she now has which fits her perfectly :D

I bought an unlined canvas rug for A$30 brand new. While many other rugs have come and gone, this one is still in excellent condition with only 2 tiny tears after 7 months of constant, everyday use. And Dasha's nickname is "Dasha the rug trasher"! For Australian readers, it was from Goodwoods in Sydney.

I've got loads of bargains. Bebe as the first one, she was v cheap!
Also got a couple of Rambo rugs for half price in a sale, brand new and fit great so dead chuffed.
Probably had loads of other bargains, I'm a bit of a bargain hunter, but they're the ones that stand out in my mind.

A $40 summer sheet (cotton) that I have used year 'round as it is the ultimate versatile sheet even proving to be rain proof for light-med showers (esp with a nice coating of mud on the outside :D)

Bobby! He was £80 as a 2.5yr old colt from a good stud with top show bloodlines...I bought him off a slightly dodgy dealer who had bought him off gypsies...Handed over the cash and got out of there:D The dealer probably made a tidy profit out of me as he will have bought him off the gypsies for very little...but considering his siblings sell for £500 at 6 months old I think I got a good bargain...oh and they delivered him for me.
Other than that....well I got a brand new £100 brass show bridle off ebay for £25. But it doesn't really fit so I'm now trying to sell it again and make myself a bit of profit too:D A 5 month old immaculate CAIR wintec saddle for £175 rather than £250 or so. A pair of leather brushing boots (brand new) off ebay for £12.

Kerry. This is the horse, sorry. Then I'd say the brilliant experience Kerry and I have both had as a result of being taught by Sue Carnell. There are others but you asked for one and I've already given two.

My boss at one of the saddlery factories I worked at took a pair of VERY expensive leather dressage boots from a saddlery shop in exchance for a bad debt. Sadly he couldn't sell them so he offered them to me, for £100, I said no, so the next week he offered them to me again for £50, I said no thanks, the next week they were £20 so I said YES!!
My other pair of Leather boots were £15 to the injured Jockey's fund, My Aunt had them and they were VERY high quality polo boots, I still have and wear both pairs!

Boots/shoes - my own boots will have to walk off me.........in twenty years time I guess since Kerry needs hers replaced seemingly so often (relatively speaking).
I have to add that my most recent bargain (pun to all of those who read my woes re my cats and neighbour) is a fourth cat!!!!!!!!!
He's in the cottage now. Even my most ferral female has given up hissing at him - and she's four times his size!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO, I guess he's a bargain too.

I just have to say...
Where are you all getting free horses (Sable, Chikumz, etc.)??? :) Also, what about all of you that got your horses for such good prices?!!! Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but wow, I wish I could find a good free (or cheap) horse! :D Actually, I'd probably have a horse by now if it wasn't for the hefty price of CARING for one. I'm only 15 so I don't have much money.

Raffles was practically given to me - only paid £100 for him. He had a reputation for being dangerous and the owners just wanted rid of him. He's an absolute star now! :D A little pyscho, but a star all the same :p

I wish I could find a good free (or cheap) horse!
I got my horses from Second Wind Adoption Program. Roulette is AHSA registered and was supposed to go to the olympics but lost an eye, which ended her career. She is sound and a smooth mover... really very fancy. She was $500 and in foal so I got 2-for-1... I guess that is a pretty good bargain! :D I also got Wit's End's Home Run "Homie" from SWAP for $600. She is calm, safe, sound and gentle... a little older (18) but no worse for the wear. If you are in the states, I highly recommend SWAP. They try hard to fit the right horse to the person and many of the horses are just like my two... easy on the ground and under saddle! Good luck finding the right horse. :)

Esther I can beat you on that one, I paid £15 for Pants, and the princely sum of £30 for Charlie, his brother! I paid £10 for Zac.

brand new quick wrap sports athletic bandages £8
brand new english leather head collars £10
brnad new rhinegold extended neck newzealand £25

Helen03, a lady I work with has a tack shop so she brings the trade magazine in every now and then and I totally agree - it does make you sick how much some tack shops make on things! You know those pastel coloured shires travel/fleece rugs - £12 in the trade mag
Apart from bargains from the trade mag, I got an english leather headcollar for £10 and some shires travel boots for £15 off ebay...I love that site :D

I got my horse Nikita for $4,000. i feel i underpaid for her, she has won many dressage/jumping events with her previous owners. she is 10 years old, an arab/t'bred cross, she is beautiful! all her tack came with her (i mean everything you could need for a horse, except the lead rope) she had about $3,000 worth of tack. I got all the tack for free when i paid $4,000 for her. I also got a jumping saddle (i forgot the name hehe) i THINK its Pasoa...or the pasoa might be my dressage saddle, cant remember of the top of my head. It was origianlly $1,200 but i got it for $750!!!

Well, I think this would be the best - next to being given the horse :D
£4 for two horses! Honestly! That's what the stables once paid! I never got to meet one of the horses, but the other one was fantastic! (Don't see her much any more) She is very kind and gentle, I have rarely known her to bite, never kick, buck, once rear up in the field ;) etc. She's beautiful, and worth a lot more than £4!! (As any horse is) She is fantastic in almost every way. I love her to bits :D
Also, Harley, a well bred arab foal, worth 6 1/2 times more than we got him for, was £1000!
Drummers mum
13th Jul 2004, 06:37 PM
Sorry have to say Drummer was a bargain too. I paid £400 for him mostly because Charlotte wanted me to have him so much and she new I was poor. Her hubby was a little cross when he found out as all her ponies go for £800!! Ooops!!
Best bargain buy mmmm, its quite hard as I am a real bargain hunter being constantly broke! Have to say though that my bridle was a bargain £17 off ebay and its good quality leather with diamond stich nose and brow band!:D
ps have to just add, whatever I paid for Drummer, he is priceless now!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D

Both my horses were awsome deals...even though Tahoe was a bit much for him at the time (2500) once he is finished training he'll be worth at least 10k. my saddle was 100$ and it was a 300$ saddle. Autumn was free...most my grooming supplies were hand me down type stuff.

My brother gave me all his tack when he decided to stop his horse addiction...so I got a pelham bit, 2 eggbutt snaffles, 2 d-bits and a few other assort bits, a leather halter, a bridle and 2 sets of reins, a saddle pad, some grooming supplies and a Crosby close contact saddle. Oh...2 girths as well.
Sevi was $4,000, but given that they wanted to sell her for about $6,000, but gave me a cheaper price because they knew me and because I was keeping her at the barn. After her training is complete, she could probably go for $8k-$10k, not that I would ever sell. I also bought a slightly used Crosby softride saddle (black), leathers and girth for $750, then sold it a week later (as it didn't fit Sevi) for $1,000. I guess I can't complain about bargains, although it would have been awesome to get Sevi for $400 instead of $4,000, heh.

I got a lovely headcollar for £4, a turnout rug for £25 reduced from £40, a complete grooming kit and box for £10, a rope halter(which I was told by someone after I bought it can also be used as a bridle) for £6, some Jods for £11, some nicer Jods for £16, a skull cap for £20, a schooling whip for £3...I could go on forever!
All of that was brand new from different shops!
I have also bought a velvet hat cover second hand for £1 which was as good as new.
For anyone who's interested, the headcollar, turnout rug, grooming kit, and cheaper pair of jods were all from Decathlon.

Well I think Phantom was a bargain for 500 pounds, but although he's worth a lot more now, i'd never sell him :)
My dear little mini shetland Rusty was 50 pounds from up the road.
I bought a wintec 500 saddle from eBay for 75 pounds, and just sold it for 150.
And my new gorgeous Albion selecta saddle from eBay, 250 pounds, second hand but *lovely* condition, and priceless to me because it fits awkward old Phantom like a glove! :D
Oh and not horse related, but my vauxhall cavalier was only 200 pounds and it's a brilliant car!
