Anyone know of a supplement/feed stuff that can be fed to horses who take a long time to heal?

My horse is always getting injured (he is very clumsy like me:eek: ) but the healing process seems to take forever.

Could he be lacking in something (other than common sense!)?

Questions first :)

What sort of injuries? i.e. lumps and bumps or open (raw) wounds? and what are you using on them currently? Are you providing any supplements currently?

Next zinc and vitamins a,e are dietary supplements that affect healing processes significantly. If you think that your horse is healing slowly take a step back and look at him\her generally? Is he really glowing? or just sort of average looking in his general health.

Rather than try to guess what's lacking - ask for a blood test from your vet ? That'll put your mind at ease and let you know if you should specifically supplement. If you don't want to do that pick up a general multi-vitamin and mineral supplement and add a little to each meal - start at about 1/2 the recommended dose DON't over supplement more is not better.

Finally, look at the things you are using externally too - zinc is a very good healing agent if used externally as are vitamin a,e and things like calendula oil, neem oil, aloe vera, my favourites comfrey and manuka. But these need to be targeted at the right sort of wound (some can't be used on raw flesh for instance).
