In two weeks I'll be going on holiday for two weeks (hooray!). My horse is on 24hour turnout at present and I give him a scoop of hi-fi and one of cool-mix each evening. He's a 15hh cob, seems to keep his weight on fairly well. Normally I ride him for 30-60mins five or six days a week but he won't get ridden whilst I'm away. My query is, should I keep his hard feed going whilst I'm away or stop it (in which case I'd start reducing it soon)?

If he keeps his weight on pretty well, I'd definitely reduce the cool mix, or even drop it altogether whilst he's not being worked if you think his weight will hold. I'd stick with the Hi-Fi though.

i agree with bebe, stick to fibre and drop or reduce the mix.;)

thanks, will do that. If nothing else, means he'll be brought in from the field and given a look over.

if hes a good doer cob out 24/7 on reasonable pasture maybe he should not be having anything extra!! especially if hes not going to work at all....my horse lives out 24/7 now is a IDxTB and has nothing but a few carrots as feed with mineral supplement each evening when hes worked and he is looking good-all the cobs at our yard are out 24/7 on grass with nothing and they are all nearly too fat!!

Well if you are not going to be their to ride him then cut down on the feed to none at all. Since the horse has good weight then i woudnt worry about any feed if my horse. And if the pasture has lots of grass then that helps too. HAVE FUN ON YOUR HOLIDAY !
