Please excuse this post if it rambles but,
Yesterday minnnie companion jake whos 28, was a bit wobbly which we thought could be the state of his feet, cracked etc with the dryness of the ground.he has athritis anyway bu when we went down after work he is servere, he is going round in stight circles, cant stand for long in one spot and nearly falls over all the time. we called thhe vet out asap and he said proberl a tuma that is putting pressure on the spinal nerves and he has lost control of his back legs. He gave hima steroid injection to bring the swelling down but he is abou the same, he said to give him 48 hours!
Debise his owner wants to know if anything like natural, or actuputure or similar healers could help in the short term or at least ease his paralsis. He has got 2 days before any dissions need to be made but please guys, any suggestions would be appriecated, he is healthy in every other way and we cant lose him we need to give him every chance, the vet says he may learn to cope with the balance thing but we need to help him.

Doesn't sound very hopeful as it may spread.

Years ago a horse at the yard I rode at had this and despite care, had to be put down, as he lost complete control of his legs, and had the runs all the time. He was very distressed.

I hope you can find something for the horse but it doesn't sound that hopeful.

Sorry to hear.

Massage and acupuncture has eased a lot of pain and arthritic type ailments, maybe it would help with this severe problem too. Just short term though Im sure. I would suggest to your friend to try whatever she can - for her peace of mind and for the horses'

Send her our regards please

She will try anything. I realise and she must as well that his time is near but it must be very hard for her to let go and to let him go.

I'm probably stating the obvious but what about a second vetinerary opinion?

It sounds like the vet "saw" the horse and gave a diagnosis - maybe this didn't happen..........but I'd need to know on what basis the diagnosis was made. What I'm wondering about is that unless the "spinal" tumour is visible to the eye (and then it still might be operable and even benign I'm hoping) - how was the diagnosis made?

Hope this helps the poor horse (and also because of how you and the owner must be feeling too of course).

Hi Nat

I'd wonder about getting a second decision also, definitely before any drastic action is taken. I know that there are various insect spread neurological diseases in the USA that may present symptoms like this poor lad has, so there are other options to look at. EPM, West Nile Virus, etc all present neurological problems so whilst it's a long stretch, something like those might be worth looking into. I think also maybe these symptoms could be a reaction to eating a poisonous plant of some kind.

Bowen therapy might help give him relief in the short term. If you can't get hold of an acupuncturist or massage therapist, shout and I'll pm you the number of the lady that does Bowen on Bebe, she's very good.

thanks you all for your suggestions, i would be lost without you all.
Thanks to horsey bird i found a actpuncturist/vet to come and give a second opinion and assestment for actupuncture, he came last night at 10pm!!! He does not think its a tuma, he actually felt him, like kerrys partners said, you cant actually see this this and the first vet did not even tounch him, just looked at him. The second one last night felt every thing and then gave hima session of actupuncture. Jake even gave a mini buck!!!

We will not see any differance for afew days but we are hopeful as the second vet thinks hes hada fall a strained his leg not a tuma, he said it is a possiblity but not likely.

Thanks again to everyone for your kind words and quick support and help. I will let you all know how we progress over the next few days.

Fingers crossed for him, poor old chap I hope it is just an injury rather than a tumour.

Denise jakes owner has called me this morning, jake was laid down this morning but got up on his own and seemed to be standing with his leg further in rather than splayed like yesterday. I know its too soon but he is putting more weight on the dragged leg and is no longer dragging it around!
I so hope its just a acciendent rather than a tumor, i have to say sorry for my spelling, i just re read it and giggled at how i spelt tumor and other things, i get carried away ike i am actually having a conversation with you and bang goes the spelling!

Sorry Nat17, I hadn't read your thread before. I hope everything is still going well and he is recovering more and putting more weight on his legs.

Will keep all my fingers and toes crossed!
