cantering in field

When i am out in my favorite feild and my horse will canter pointing home but i will turn auround and try to canter going the other way not towards home and he will not canter . He will start pulling off to the side and do a fast trot insted of canter. He is not a barn sour horse because he likes to go farther then I ask him to . I just feall like sometimes going that way i might get hurt . I do not rush him home I take my time. I try not to canter in the same spot but i am limited to what places that i have. It is the only field that i can get a canter or gallop off from . all the other ones you can only do a trot to fast trot then you run out of room. How can i get my horse to canter facing away from home without fealling i will get hurt ? I have lots of confidence with him and sometimes to encourage the canter i cuck with my voice and he responds to that well.

Do you experience same kind of problems in arena or just in trails?
Are you riding this horse alone or someone helps you? How old is he, his previous life history etc?
In my opinion, there is either obidience problems (so, does hias behavior differs in lessons and in trail?) or he has some psychological problems you should try to find out and help.

Hey Western!

I a similar problem with Cheyanne, dont worry you are not alone! This also is a real confidence loss problem, as I have experienced it and can get nervous. I dont know if I can help you very much, but I find, if possible, it is best to ride in different feilds as often as possible, Cheyanne seems to behave much better when hes not quite sure where he's going in relation to home. Something else i do when Cheyanne pulls off to the side it to pull the other way, he soon realises that it is a waste of time!

I do not have an arena or a round pen. I wish i could have an arena though but i only have one horse so it wouldnt be any use to spen money on it. I only do hacking in the fields and only have 4 hay fields to ride in . Others are wheat and corn. i am vary limited on the space that i have. I am just lucky to have that much actually. But i just canter in the biggest field that i have the others i cant because i run out of room fast.

my horse has problems goin away from home too sometiimes..the other day i could only get him to lope away from home, buy gallop back!lol...try lcucking or kissing with yuor voice everythime yuo go away from home, and when he gives yuo a canter, even if it is slow, reward him with a pat..if will not canter after a few clucks and squeeses/kicks...just simply stop and back. he will get tired of having to back all the time and will eventually go faster for yuo:0

Thanks , ill try doing that . Hes is just so hard to get to canter . He'l just wave his head auround , but i will try clucking he somethies works for that .
