Hello, my name is Wendy, I am the owner of two beautiful quarter horses - which I ride western style. One - Laiko, is up for sale - through advertising him on the internet, I received a reply from nigeria. This lady(?), claimed to be an american working in nigeria - and she wanted to ship Laiko home to America. To cut a long story short - she sent me a fraudulant cheque to cover the price of the horse and shipping, wanting me to send Laiko out to America and forward part of the cheque (which had not cleared), onto a shipping company, before the cheque had a chance to clear. I am glad that I did neither - this is a known scam so I found out and they are trying it on with anything - not just horses. But please be aware of any e-mails that come from abroad especially nigeria!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks for listening!!!! Wendy

I posted about this scam a while back, not just Nigeria. It's international now!

I've heard of this scam before, and I'm glad that you didn't fall for it. If you want to sell a horse internationally, you could always do it in escrow, that way the funds are guaranteed.
Mine you I'd be wary of someone purchasing a horse site unseen.

I've just had one of these about my bridle I have up for sale in the ad section. Same thing - american working in africa. As it was I ignored it - because I thought anyone prepared to pay for my £25 continental leather bridle to be posted to africa must either be insane or a fraud:D ...then I spotted the warning about them.

I had this. it's a pretty impressive letter. someone saying they were replying to my add on behalf of a client. they could give me several thousand dollars for the horse i had advertised as $1800. and all i needed to do way give the horse to a friend of his who lived in Aus and then the check would be forwarded.
It’s a lot like the one about giving the person your bank account details and they will deposit several million dollars into it for “safe keeping”.
I'm glad you didn't fall for this horid trick
What a con, I ignored it.
