Hi everyone, I am a newly converted fan of dressage after my new descovery of Taffys flair for schooling.

I have always schooled him in a jointed pelham because thats what I show him in. But I would really like to have go at some prelim dressage tests, I understand you can't wear pelhams and that you can only wear snaffles at this level.

So could anyone advise me on a snaffle that would be suitable.

Can you wear baucher or hanging cheek snaffles? As I think he I will need that little bit of leverage.

I usually ride him for hacking in a dutch gag so I have no experiance of riding him in a snaffle.

Any advice will be great thanks.:D

Hi Gemma16

As far as I know a hanging cheek snaffle is permitted in prelim.
I am no expert, but it might be your better option if he is used to a pelham as they apply a little poll pressure

I would go for the hanging cheek snaffle.

Just do trial and error. Sure look at us. We could practically open a bit bank for 5" bits, as we've tried Maverick in 11 bits, and are now back using the origonal bit we used after we bought him, apart from we now use a fixed full cheek, where as before we use a loose ring full cheek.

I like baucher bits personally. It's my stables bit of choice...lol. All the horses are trained in them, and yes it is allowed in competition, you should try both bits to see which your horse prefers...:)

Bauchers and hanging cheeks have the same cheekpieces but different mouthpieces, a filit baucher usually has a moveable ported mouthpiece.

I would try him in a a jointed hanging cheek.
